A) Why is the animation a concern? Even if they get none of the original team back, there aren't a shortage of good animators in Japan. Just give them enough money and, especially, time and they will do good work. There's almost no way this doesn't end up looking like sex on screen.

B) As far as I know, The Pillows is still an active band. Even if they aren't/can't record live/new music, its not like they don't have a deep backlog to pull from. Granted, we have to actually hear they are back before we can say anything but its not like they can't reasonably match the music

C)The last point is potentially a concern but I feel they would have to strongly misunderstand what people liked about the original. Its more likely in my opinion that they turn up the crazy TOO HIGH and the show becomes a mess/acid trip/etc.

It takes a lot more than money to get quality animation. It's not just about assembling enough good animators. What if the director for this isn't very good? (And we have to consider that the director will almost certainly be a worse director than Tsurumaki) Even with tons of great animators, it still won't wind up looking as good as the original.

What's the release schedule for this? The original six episodes were released across an entire year, meaning there was a massive amount of time to work on each episode. If this is airing on TV from the start, it won't have the benefit of such a schedule.

I doubt this winds up looking like Musashi Gundoh, but there's every possibility that it doesn't look half as good as the original.

If The Pillows won't do it then they should force Beck to learn Japanese. Since I was a kid I've always felt Beck's music would fit perfectly with FLCL.

I know this is odd, but you say Beck and I thought Mongolian Chop Squad (another anime with the pillows contributing some music). Man I wish they had done a second season of that show. Shit in the manga goes kind of nuts past the point the show ends.

I mean Adult Swim already paid to make Season 2. Considering it didn't do gangbusters, I assume they don't want to pay for a 3rd season.

I thought the story was that Big O S2 actually did quite well but there was a lot of internal backlash towards it and the ATHF guys threatened to leave over it so they let them make Squidbillies instead to placate them

That...actually worries me a bit.

It's pretty obvious why. FLCL was a complete work. It left no real room for a sequel, and didn't need one.

And I assume whatever staff they get working on a FLCL sequel will be people who don't get what FLCL was or what made it successful. Otherwise, I doubt they would be working on a sequel.

Well, I assume Tsurumaki will be too busy with Evangelion to work on this. Enokido could work on it, I suppose, but there's no real indication of that. (And I dont have much faith in 2016 Enokido to write a quality script given most of his recent output)
Yeah. True. I think you're probably right but I'm not ready to judge this too harshly just yet. I mean, whatever it is I'll watch it but now it's just about getting enough info to set expectations correctly.
Would be cool if they did. If they're not involved, there's really no point in bringing this back.
Heh, true. Though the first series (feels so weird to write that) was mostly edits of their classics so the next two could just plumb the 10+ albums they've released since...

How FLCL S2 could work:

A second year highschool girl discovers that her school is about to be shut down, a sad reflection of the decisions of adults having an impact on the young. Not satisfied with this she seeks out to make a difference and combat this with the power of music. With her two friends she tries to set up a resistance group but finds the school council is unwilling to help, so much so that they even want to shut this new group down! But after an emotional performance the school council is won over and even joins said group, along with some other resulting is a group of nine members total. Through performances the group gains support and saves the school, but it isn't over because life isn't all happy endings. Life goes on and the students have to come to terms with what will happen when they leave the school (they are of different ages so three of them will be graduating at the end of the year), will the school and those they know be able to continue if their group separates? Are they willing to compromise their futures just to stay together? What does it mean to love, what does it mean to live? All questions facing one growing up in tough times.

I can see that being a success without tarnishing the reputation of the original.

WTF? Hm, not really sure if I want this, as FLCL had just enough episodes to say all it needed to and never had any need for a sequel...

"Back for the new season is FLCL series creator Kazuya Tsurumaki, serving as supervisor with director Katsuyuki Motohiro (Psycho-Pass) and character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto (Neon Genesis Evangelion). Also joining this season is writer Hideto Iwai (Last Dinner)."

Is what I just saw.

My initial reaction was joy, but now I realize that one of the reasons I love FLCL so much is that it had a definitive and thematic-appropriate ending that wasn't troll-tastic/downbeat like most of Gainax' other stuff. So now I'm hesitant.

Speaking of Gainax shows with incredible endings (even if it's the most troll-tastic of all), I'd figuratively kill a man for a second season of Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt. Or at least Toonami can air the original series

Press Release from Turner

Popular Anime Series To Premiere on Network’s Toonami Block

Cue Anime Fans Worldwide Going Insane

Adult Swim, a division of Turner, is proud to announce an official sequel to one of the most beloved anime series of all time - FLCL (pronounced Fooly Cooly). Created in 2000, FLCL told the tale of Naota, a 12-year-old boy who met a woman that would forever change his life…whether he liked it or not. 16 years later, Adult Swim and legendary animation studio, Production I.G (Ghost in the Shell), are creating two new six-episode seasons to continue the tale, which will premiere in Adult Swim’s Toonami block. Known for its surprising and unique content with high fan engagement, Adult Swim has been basic cable’s #1 Network in the U.S. with 18-24 and 18-34 year olds for eleven consecutive years. The new season of FLCL adds to Adult Swim’s ever expanding portfolio of original programming.

“The original FLCL is an anime classic and has been a fixture on Adult Swim since we first laid eyes on it,” said Jason DeMarco, senior vice president/creative director, Adult Swim On-Air. “I’m beyond thrilled to be able to produce a sequel with the original creators, for Toonami, where it belongs.”

Back for the new season is FLCL series creator Kazuya Tsurumaki, serving as supervisor with director Katsuyuki Motohiro (Psycho-Pass) and character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto (Neon Genesis Evangelion). Also joining this season is writer Hideto Iwai (Last Dinner).

Established in 1987, Production I.G has since produced a number of acclaimed feature films and TV shows, and has also partnered with Mamoru Oshii on every one of his animated films since Patlabor: The Movie (1989), thereby earning an international admiration which eventually led to the visionary collaboration with Quentin Tarantino for the animation sequence in his hit, Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003). They are most known for the Ghost in the Shell franchise, and for the acclaimed animated TV series Psycho-pass and Attack on Titan.

“FLCL has become an anime classic over the years, yet it has remained vibrant,” said Mitsuhisa Ishikawa, co-founder, president and CEO of Production I.G. “This new season will capture the hearts of both longtime FLCL fans from around the world and new anime viewers.”

In the new season of FLCL, many years have passed since Naota and Haruhara Haruko shared their adventure together. Meanwhile, the war between the two entities known as Medical Mechanica and Fraternity rages across the galaxy. Enter Hidomi, a young teenaged girl who believes there is nothing amazing to expect from her average life, until one day when a new teacher named Haruko arrives at her school. Soon enough, Medical Mechanica is attacking her town and Hidomi discovers a secret within her that could save everyone, a secret that only Haruko can unlock.

But why did Haruko return to Earth?
What happened to her Rickenbacker 4001 she left with Naota?
And where did the human-type robot ‘Canti’ go?

All of these questions and more will be answered in the new season of the series, which is set to premiere in late 2017/early 2018 on Adult Swim.

Nah. No thanks.

For those of us who have no idea what this is, can you equate it to something else?
Basically...You do it like this with your hands.

Well, Tsurumaki's "supervising." Whatever that means. But hey, he's involved. New writer though...

Hopes not completely dashed?

They are taking an allegorical story and saying the metaphors were actually the things they are and not what they represented and then telling a story with these out-of-context nonsensical entities.

Ho my lord this is a terrible idea.

Is what I just saw.

I wonder if Tsurumaki is doing any actual "supervising" on this, or he's just taking a check in exchange for them being able to put his name on it.

"From the director of Psyho-Pass" doesn't really inspire much confidence.

Haruko arriving and messing up another young teen's life is a perfect set-up for a new season. Makes me wonder what a Season 3 entails though. I imagine that characters from Season 1, including Naota, will show up at some point.

Naota's story reached a perfect conclusion though, so they probably SHOULDN'T bring him back. But they will, because they can. I just hope he isn't pining for Haruko or anything, I really liked him and Ninamori together.

so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so sos os sosososososo sosososososso

HYPED, but yeah we definitely need the pillows for this

porno graffitti could work though if they can't get the pillows for some reason

hmm...

Well what if the director is great? I can throw that right back at you. You're being super cynical (which isn't totally unwarranted to be fair but is cynicsm nonetheless). Recent shows like Space Dandy, many KyoAni works, etc were freaking eye-gasms. There's no reason to think a talented team couldn't put together a visual masterpiece (even if it had different animation sensibilities from the original). You're also right in that we don't know the production schedule. However considering this was commissioned by Western interests, why are we to assume they would be beholden to the production schedule of a standard Japanese TV anime and not like an OVA production schedule?

I thought the story was that Big O S2 actually did quite well but there was a lot of internal backlash towards it and the ATHF guys threatened to leave over it so they let them make Squidbillies instead to placate them

Really? This is news to me if true O_O

EDIT: NVM, just saw above, will read in a second.

Assuming that synopsis is real, I was kinda-sorta on board at first. Having Haruko run into someone else's life as its own separate thing, I could see that working. But as soon as it brings back everyone else, nope, nope, nope nope nope.

For reasons that I won't get into as it'll make me sound like a fucking crazy person, FLCL is one of the very few pieces of media that have had an actual impact on my life, and I can't think of anything I want less than more of it.

Should have been Inferno Cop series 2…

I mean, it should've been, but FLCL's a bit bigger than something some Studio TRIGGER guys drunkenly made during lunch breaks. There's a good chance this'll be a mess, but screw it. It's more FLCL! If it sucks, I'll just pretend these episodes don't exist just like with every other show that went past its prime.
