Advance Wars DS and the Touch Screen

I'm not a huge fan of the series, but I did have a good lot of fun with Advance Wars 1 when it came out. The sequel really just felt like more of the same from the fifteen minutes I played of it.

But as much positive hype I've heard about the DS version, I haven't heard anything at all about how you play it. I recall hearing once somewhere that it doesn't use the touch screen at all, which is why I'm asking: they're wrong right?

One thing that bugged me about the game was how much I had to jam the A button to select and move 20 things a turn. When I saw screens for the DS version my first thought was that naturally controlling all the units with the touch screen would be super easy/fun.

Could someone just tell me how it plays and what's going to be better about it than the GBA versions?

Coincidentally, I was just looking at the updated Japanese website and there seems to be a new mode called Combat where you move a unit with the d-pad and fire stuff with the touchpen in realtime. It looks like a lot of fun. 8 player wireless supported in this mode too.

But the normal game, do you move your units with the touchpad or are you stuck just using d-pad and a button?

The latter sounds ridiculous but it's the only thing I've heard so far.

all i know is, that of all the games i played at E3, this one had by far the most natural controls out of anything there.

all thanks to the touch screen.
