Just a heads up for anyone interested in getting the first batch through Indiegogo. A niche market within a niche market for sure. But it's the kind of devices I've been waiting for.

The AYANEO Pocket DS is a dual-screen handheld game console with a Qualcomm Snapdragon G3x Gen 2 processor, a 7 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixel OLED primary display with a 165 Hz screen refresh rate, up to 800 nits brightness, and 16:9 aspect ratio. There's also secondary screen in the base, which is a 5 inch, 1024 x 768 pixel LCD display with a 4:3 aspect ratio and up to 550 nits brightness

First unveiled in July, it's up for pre-order for $400 and up through an
Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign and the AYANEO Pocket DS is expected to begin shipping to backers in October.

The dual-screen design is obviously ideal for playing Nintendo DS games in emulation, but could also come in handy in a variety of other situations.

With a $400 starting price the Pocket DS is kind of expensive for an Android-based handheld game console, but even without the second screen it would be one of the most powerful options around thanks to its Snapdragon G3x Gen 2 processor and support for up to 16GB of LPDDR5-8533 RAM and 1TB of UFS 4.0 storage (although entry-level models have just 8GB and 128GB of UFS 3.1, respectively).

Other features include an 8,000 mAh battery, "PC-grade cooling" with a copper heat sink and dual cooling fans, a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port and microSD card reader, and support for WiFi and Bluetooth. There are stereo front-facing speakers.

To the left and right of the second screen you'll find a set of gaming controllers that feature TMR joysticks with a 1,000 Hz polling rate, a D-Pad, and plenty of buttons. There are also linear triggers with hall effect sensors, a 6-axis gyroscope, and dual-axis vibration motors.

The AYANEO Pocket DS ships with Android 13 and features AYASPACE and AYAHome software.

While this is cool, it still doesn't beat a homebrewed 3DS in my opinion. Plus, the games built for DS/3DS were made with a resistive touch screen and stylus in mind. You simply don't get the accuracy and articulation with a capacitive touch screen.

This is a great "catch all" emulation device. If you do not care about it being on the 3ds then get this. If you want that authentic "DS experience" modified DS hardware is the way to go.

Don't get me wrong, not shitting on the product. Its going to do WAY more than the 3ds could ever hope to run.
Also a $500 dollar+ (16gb ram versions) android hand held will probably put a large-ish majority of users off of the device.

You're not wrong, nothing really compares to the real hardware to get the 100% intended experience. Just the input delay of most emulators can make things feel off, especially for games dependent on quick, precise, inputs.

I borrowed a friends 3DS for a little while and my problem is that I found it to uncomfortable to hold for extended play sessions. Curse these middle-aged hands. 😁

That's too real. Trying to play through Metroid Prime Hunters recently was a nightmare.

A bunch of similar devices have come out in the last two or three weeks. I've seen at least 3 being reviewed in YT. I don't think Nintendo can sue them all.

(they can try, though)
Yeah, I noticed that myself. Wouldn't be suprised to see Anbernic announcing something soon aswell.

Article:
The Nintendo DS is a foldable handheld game console produced by Nintendo, released globally across 2004 and 2005.

Combined with this.

Article:
Consequently, in most patent laws nowadays, the term of patent is 20 years from the filing date of the application.

Add a bit of leeway, to make sure Ninty dosen't have any legal ground and this makes a lot of sense.

Yeah....very doubtful. I just like to give them shit for being so sue-happy.

Looks cool, but those recessed thumbsticks look like butt. This also costs as much as a Steam Deck, ouch.

we're starting to see more, AYN just announced the Thor which is going to be their DS & I'm sure it's only a matter of time before we get a Retroid Flip DS which hopefully will be more like $300?

This looks incredible. I wish Nintendo would make something like this; a modern, true portable dual screen handheld designed for continued ds/3ds games

Switch is handheld but I don't think it's really portable and it isn't ideal for playing dual screen games.

Getting decent grips is the solution. Same for DS.

I have modded DSi XL and new3DS XL and can't handle them without grips. I do dig 3D effects on some games.

I am mildly interested in this but not $500 interested.

If I were a sane person I would just get the Ayn Thor. Better grips on the back and looks like it would feel better in my hill giant hands.
I wonder when Retroid will announce one, the Thor makes the Flip 2 seem a lil overpriced honestly because the SD365 model is only $30 more (same chipset as the Flip 2)

I like 7" primary and 5.5" secondary combo more than 6"/4" on Thor.

But Thor seems to be almost $100 cheaper on the 12GB/256GB version.
the Ayaneo one isn't bad for the early bird price

Keeping my order for Ayaneo's offering (for now). They seem to be quite commited to make the dual screen experience work on the software side. But I'm open to changing my mind if Ayn previews well or if Anbernic reveals something enticing this year.

Will be using it almost solely for NDS/3DS so don't need the world's best chip, but I do appriciate tmr-sticks, a meaty battery and good ergonomics.

It's $450 plus shipping and tariffs (assuming there is a customs charge). And let's just say RMA is going to be problematic if something happens.

Also, Android on these won't be updated to new version and who knows how long security patches will be pushed.

It's a cool device but maybe a cheaper one does make more sense.

AYN Technologies has already confirmed that the AYN Thor will initially launch for $150 less than the Ayaneo Pocket DS.

Article:
Now, AYN Technologies has confirmed that the Thor will be available to order before the end of the month. Specifically, the company plans to open pre-orders at 01:30 UTC on August 26 from $249. Please note that this starting price will only be sold in black with a Snapdragon 865 chipset, 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage.

Meanwhile, AYN Technologies intends to charge $299 for the Thor with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, again restricted to a black colourway. For some reason, the company has decided to reserve the handheld's Clear Purple, Rainbow and White options that start at $349. Still, AYN Technologies has priced the AYN Thor competitively against the Ayaneo Pocket DS, which starts at $399. Currently, AYN Technologies hopes to begin shipping AYN Thor orders from mid-October onwards.

Nobody will buy it.

Just get an ancient DS. $400? LOL.
nah this will sell like hotcakes in the retro handheld community, besides being a massive boon for the dual screen emulators, imagine all the other things you can do with it

this isn't like the DS, you can have the second screen doing something completely different while playing a game, trying to solve tricky puzzle and need help? you can follow along to a guide or video of the solution without switching away from the game or using another device

playing a retro RPG with a lot of grinding? you can have Netflix going on the second screen while you mindless fight battle after battle on the top screen

edit: as long as these companies can get the software support right, I trust AYN more there than Ayaneo (the latter isn't really known for great post-release product support), Android doesn't have great innate second screen support from what I've read but early reports from reviews of Retroid's second screen add-on have been good and AYN supposedly shares their product development team

Windows would likely be better for this kind of device but Android is more affordable (even Ayaneo's own dual screen Windows devices go for $700+ starting)

I am kind of tempted by AYANEO since the hinge looks more robust and I like the larger screens.

But I know it's going to be over $500 after shipping and customs and I really, really don't need this, lol.

I am assuming very soon. The 2nd screen addon for the pocket 5 is supposed to ship this month.
Update:
This device completely blows.

Got it in the mail today, will have some more in depth thoughts later but initially:
1) Doesn't "clip" to the RP5 very well at all.
2) Does not close fully on the RP5. There is a gap at the bottom of the screen as it folds down (could be my ineptitude in setup).
3) Still updating to get software supported.

Off to educate myself on it...hopefully I am just an idiot in terms of setup but so far this one is a stinker.

That's shitty to hear, especially that it won't clip securely in place. Hope you figure something out.

Watched Russ's impressions of it. It does seem a bit janky, but great price for those that have a supported device.

I haven't watched their videos but added them to the queue. Thanks for mentioning them!!

The AYANEO Pocket DS will also support Linux gaming thanks to ROCKNIX.

Article:
In a lengthy live stream earlier today, AYANEO showed off some of its upcoming hardware, and while the spotlight was largely on the new Retro Mini PC, the Pocket DS also managed to get quite a bit of attention. While we were already familiar with many of the details from before, one slide in particular caught our eye today, hyping support for Linux games.

Not only will gamers have access to Android, but with ROCKNIX as well, that opens the door for some powerful emulation options with a really clean front-end. Like we said: This was already shaping up to be a special handheld, and now we're feeling even more eager to get our hands on one.

Great news, more options is always a good thing. Hope they work closely with the Rocknix community to get the software for DS gaming working optimal.
