Advent Rising ROX!

I tried this game.

Because some random punk on a forum said it was good. And he had a Nick Frost avatar, and I like Nick Frost. And so I was like, hey, I'll like Advent Rising too probably; because if he likes that, then I'll like this. Because that's the way the world works. And then I was like, great. And so I got hold of a copy and played it for at least 20 minutes. And it was really rubbish.

So I'm not coming here again [today]. And next time I steal a game, it's going to be Psychonauts.

Stick that up your bum and smoke it.

The first 20 minutes aren't exactly the high point of the game, Mr. Barley.

It was nice working with you in manstrokewoman, though. Maybe you're just jealous that I stole the show?

I'm honestly confused as to whether Demi actually enjoys the game as much as he says, or if it's some elaborate jab at it's oft-maligned quality.

Personally, aside from the gorgeous cut scenes, the game is a joke. Who cares about the glitching and poor controls, the story and lead character are so insultingly juvenile you can't help but laugh. Never before have I been so happy I rented rather than buying, as I came quite close to plunking down the cash on release day.

The day Orsen Scott Card writes a narrative that doesn't include some telekenesis-happy twentysomething hero is the day R.A Salvatore stops writing six horrendous books at once.

I would actually like to know why you thought this game was so good.

I know this Demi's thread and all but we've had some AIM conversations of how this everyone missing out on this game is such a travesty. I love it as well.

Why was this game so good?

Well the best way to describe it is that it felt like an third person action shooter set in a universe similar to what has been created for the Halo stories. Very good Sci-Fi story, great settings and I thought the two main alien races were very well done. I guess you could say the game had "good art".
As much as people don't like Tommy Talarico (spelling) on tv the soundtrack he created for this game is outstanding.
The game is glitchy, it can lock up on you and it has some frequent slowdown. But none of those issues ever caused me to die or get stuck in the game.
The battles can get pretty freakin big at times and the control of just tapping the right stick to change targets works very well (when it co-operates). It is very easy to be flipping around, changing targets and using your powers while fighting 5+ enemies at a time.
The game throws some pretty cool vehicle levels into the mix which I thought were pretty well done.
And the ending is absolutely one of the BEST I have played on a console game. The way they leave this game is just a freakin killer and makes me want to play the next game in the series so badly.

It really is a shame that this game didn't get a little more polish so that it would have been better accepted by the masses because this might have been an excellant game series.

If you can get this game on the cheap and you can have the patience to look past it's short comings and really get into the game then PLEASE play it.

Odd I played this game and saw none of this...

Not even the slowdown? I witnessed plenty of that :)

I think demi should warn people that this game rarely runs above 20 fps.

Honestly, I don't think the game is bad; it just isn't worth paying $30 for. It has some neat ideas in it and some really expansive levels to play around in but the game is lacking any sort of polish whatsoever. It is the glitchiest and slowest running console game I've played. While the story isn't as great as some people claim, it's serviceable. It has a neat premise (humans revered as gods) but it really isn't well executed. In fact, that's the best way to describe advent rising: great ideas, poor execution.

GAF law number 314:

"If there's a new thread about Psychonauts there will be a new corresponding Demi's thread about Advent Rising".

***yawn

Only twice? Tsk tsk.

Guess it shows who really is the number one fan around these parts.

I have no problem with being the number two fan in the world of this game.

I'm #2, I'm #2.

I am the Pepsi of Advent Rising. :D

Its worth playing Advent Rising all the way to the end, its a rare title in that it actually gets better as you go through.

By the end of the game you have so many ways to approach every situation (all your powers leveled up) you almost wish there were more enemies to fling around/shoot/trap/grenade/mind blast/bomb/etc

There is slowdown when theres more than a few enemies/allies on screen and there are some unavoidable glitches, but they arent game breaking, just disapointing as they let the rest of the game down.
