November 22, 2004 - Shining a blinding light of gleaming graphics and enveloping storytelling (by sci-fi author Orson Scott Card), Majesco's ambitious Advent Rising has cast a glow since it first started making the rounds over a year ago. Lurking in its shadow is a game of perhaps even bigger potential -- the game's designers have spun off an exclusive side-story for the PlayStation Portable.

Titled Advent Shadow, the PSP game makes use of the versatile gameplay from the console game -- which includes action, stealth, and even vehicle driving -- in a parallel story that follows a female co-star character from the planned three-part console series. If you've seen any footage of the Xbox / PC game, you know what this PSP game aims to deliver, and at the same time, can guess at the kinds of new territory the handheld edition might seek out on its own unique mission.

Progress on Advent Shadow is already well underway -- while this is likely your first time hearing about the game, the title has been in the works for a while now, and Majesco is hoping that its debut PSP offering will be one of the first breakthrough original titles for the system. The company did not give any date beyond a general 2005 release, but a recent magazine spread on the game pegged the game as a possible launch title for the system -- depending on where development on the PSP project is at now, it may be up to its console brother as to when the handheld edition gets to see light of day. Until then, we'll be keeping an eye out for more on the game to see how far Advent Shadow casts.

Those shots are renders but the realtime shots in GI are quite impressive and look more ambitious than anything publicly shown on PSP to date.

So it's a trilogy, but you've got the first game on the Xbox and the second game on the PSP, developed by two separate studios?

How do they look compared to these renders? Are they at least comparable (minus the super-antialiasing seen in these screens, of course).

No, the main trilogy is for PC and Xbox (for now). This is a sidestory.

Although Advent Rising shows a lot of promise, it's still funny to me that they're building up this entire franchise that doesn't even really exist yet.

wow, I thouht they said its xbox and pC only because it wont run on the other systems? and that the next ones wouldn;t even be able to be done on the current hardware.

Just went and looked at the shots in GI and discovered that all of them appear to be renders like those above. One is definitely realtime as it appears to be using lower poly structures with aliasing noticeable on buildings. Think of Advent Rising ported to PS2 and you are getting close.

I'm glad to see something akin to a sci-fi epic coming to PSP.
