Adventure Games Thread 2021 - The Future of Fine Leather Jackets

Yeah, last year I thought Beautiful Desolation, Roki and Zniw Adventure were all fantastic. I also liked Virtua Verse, Tell Me Why, Beyond a Steel Sky and LUNA a lot.

This year there were a lot of delays and disappointments unfortunately. There were some neat surprises like The Forgotten City & Road 96, and some games I still want to try out like Genesis Noir, The Rewinder & The Sundew but overall not too much going on.

Conway was another pleasant surprise, I'll say that much. I just finished it last night and it's a good looking, well animated and intriguing mystery that strikes a healthy balance of narrative and puzzle solving. The performances are really good as well, despite the devs needing to patch the audio levels on VA. I actually think it might be worth looking into for you The Cockatrice The Cockatrice if you can get into a slow burn detective story. I think there's a demo.

Definitely don’t have high hopes for this one after the last debacle

So I just read through the developer's update on Steam and it confirms that they're not changing the script like last time.
Updates You Can Hear

Believe it or not, a good number of people still had dial-up internet in 2007. Telltale was always looking for ways to keep download sizes small, and massively compressing audio was a favorite trick. Now that we’re living in the future, this isn’t necessary, so we went into the vault and scrounged up the original voice files to remaster and re-encode them at higher quality. Your ears will thank us.

(We only had access to the English voice files, so there is no foreign language voice in the remaster. The game has subtitles in English, German, French, Spanish, and Italian, same as Sam & Max Season Two.)

As in Sam & Max Save the World, we once again rerecorded Bosco with voice actor Ogie Banks, but
no lines were rewritten this time
. Longtime fans may notice some small changes due to the natural improvisation that happens during recording, but the script itself is untouched.

The music has also been spruced up, with some existing tracks embellished and eight new ones written by Jared Emerson-Johnson. The new tracks were performed by live musicians from the original Season Two soundtrack and the Sam & Max Save the World remaster.
Which is good to know. Hopefully someone will do another Bosco voice restoration mod like with the first remaster.

hi why did you give my post the empathy like

The Cockatrice

I'm retarded?
The new Syberia game is coming in Dec, I havent read much about it but I'm curious if it'll be any good. Is it set before the events of the first games?

Yes and no. There's another playable protagonist along with Kate Walker, Dana Roze, she seems to be an ancestor of Kate's from pre-WW2 times. So you play Kate's story in 2004 and Dana's story in 1937. Also Kate's half of the plot technically picks up from Syberia III but after playing the prologue my impression was that it doesn't seem concerned with finishing the Yukol migration plot or anything else from the third game (probably for the best).

Don't know anything about it... did Sokal worked on it?

Don't know anything about it... did Sokal worked on it?

Far as I can tell he was writer & lead designer on this same as the other games before he passed away.

May as well post this new screenshot Microids shared on Twitter as well:

Having followed a few Microids published games at this point, I gatta say their pre-release rollout is very sparse. Feels like I should be seeing more content for this and Pendulo's new Vertigo game since that's also coming out in December.

Korean developed mystery "Buried Stars" is coming to PC a week from today. I played through some of the Switch version for this and appreciated what I played, although some aspects were too streamlined for my taste. It's about a group of aspiring idols participating in a televised talent competition. During the production something causes a cave-in, the stage collapses, and while most people manage to get out, the stars are left in the studio buried. Hence the title: Buried Stars. I played up to the point where a mystery started building & the body of a producer is found dead. It's an interesting premise, the characters are distinct and have enjoyable personality clashes. There's also many different mechanics in regards to questioning people, searching social media for evidence, presenting facts & managing the stars mental state. I just wish some of it was a little less hand-holdy. Regardless, the game seemed pretty cool. I do intend to finish it at some point.

The cartoony dinosaurs are back in the second chapter of the Zid and Zniw Chronicles series! Featuring a familiar look and feel, Zid Journey combines classic point-and-click adventure gameplay with charming cartoon visuals, comic book-esque art style, and frame-by-frame animation!

ban2_fix.png

Zid - a dinosaur from Magmosian forests - spots an abandoned egg while looking around for some firewood. With no parents or nest in sight, Zid decides to take the egg with him to safety and ask fellow dinosaurs about it. However, much to everyone's shock the egg soon hatches into a carnivorous hatchling - a baby Daspletosaurus! As these predators are feared in Magmosia, the forest inhabitants pressure Zid to get rid of the hatchling. Zid soon disappears from the forest as he goes on a quest to reunite the hatchling with its lost parents instead. It will be a daunting task, as the only clue of the hatchling's origin is an unknown village deep in the far away Northern Borderlands...

ban2.png

  • Charming visuals featuring cartoony art style, hand-drawn backgrounds, and frame-by-frame animations!
  • The dino-baby in your backpack will not only give you small hints, but will also have its own unique gameplay segments!
  • Even more different dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures to meet on your way!
  • Visit new places, landmarks, and settlements in the prehistoric world of Polisemia!
  • The in-game encyclopaedia returns, with information about creatures, items, and locations you encounter during your travels!
  • A pleasant soundtrack done by Zniw Adventure's composer - Denis Comtesse!

Sequel to Sniw Adventure, a favorite of mine from last year, has been announced with a projected release date in 2023. The game has a new protagonist, Zid, who seems to have a baby dinosaur companion who chills in their backpack. Which would seem to indicate that the limited inventory from the first game is back, which could have been dropped IMO, but thankfully the game also retains the amazing cartoon visuals from the first game as well. Really happy that this husband & wife team are making another game, and really quickly after 5 years of development on Zniw. Greatly anticipating this game.

AI was so amazing, brought me back to playing VN games after neglecting them for quite some time.

On another note, I found out that while having played all major point-and-click adventure games in the 90s, I completely missed out on the library of Legend Entertainment. I put some on Launchbox now (games using their upgraded engine) but I really don't know where to start. You guys have any recommendations? I played a bit of Companions of Xanth and it was not bad.

PLEASE release new trailer....

Interesting, there's a new eye hologram that I assume belongs to the guy on the bottom left, since the hologram has red elements & his eye is glowing red. He also looks like a younger Date. Which couldn't possibly be the case with any other writer but Uchikoshi is batshit insane enough for me to consider the possibility.

Which makes me more curious about what Uchikoshi said a while ago:

Callahan's Crosstime Saloon. One of my all time favorites, incredible cast and amazing dialogue. Just a great vibe overall. It's about a bar where all kinds of aliens, monsters and sci-fi people hang out. You play as folk musician and all around decent guy Jake Stonebender as he lends an ear to several bargoers and helps with their bizarre problems.

It's a funny and heartfelt game and one of the 90s classics that really lives up to the idea of "a laugh line on every hotspot" (or close to it). Does have some off parts puzzle wise, but overall it's fine. I havent played any of the other Legend games but I love Callahan's and recommend it 100%.

I wanted to play it since I saw Pushing Up Roses' video about it. Never actually ended up playing it.

Thanks a lot, completely overlooked that one for some reason. Added to Launchbox :messenger_sunglasses:

BTW that abandonware link is probably the disk version, but the CDROM version is out there somewhere too :messenger_smiling_horns:

Superhero league of Hoboken.

that game has a special place in my heart. Its even better if youre from the tristate area and are familiar with real world locations

New Kazutaka Kodaka mystery game announced at a recent Danganronpa live event. Apparently Kodaka, like Kotaro Uchikoshi, is still developing games in collaborating with Spike Chunsoft despite no longer being directly employed after leaving too form TooKyo games. So it seems like the best of both worlds. They get to do creative side projects and still make bigger games at their old studio.

In any case the new game is called "Chou Tantei Jinken-bo RAINCODE" which translates to "Ultra-Detective Case File: RAINCODE"* and what little information exists for it currently can be found in this Dengeki Online article and this teaser trailer from the live event:

So not too much information right now, aside from Kodaka's signature "psycho-pop" style remaining fully intact. I'm actually not sure if it's even an adventure game* but given Kodaka's development history I'd say it's a safe bet. And there's always the budgetary reasons.

*NVM Kodaka confirmed it is in a Famitsu interview. I think this may be the collaboration with Uchikoshi that he's hinted at before. Will read more to find out later.

Also the games actual localized title is "Enigma Archives RAINCODE," I hadn't seen the English website beforehand. But it's good to know that the game is definitely getting localized.

That's definitely an improvement but the lines still have the unnatural sound of a conversation recorded in two discreet parts (for obvious reasons). IDK how they directed their VA's. But, I know Dave Gilbert & Francisco Gonzalez get around that by acting out the opposing lines along with their voice actors.

In any case good on them for taking that criticism to heart and making a productive change based on it.

PSA.

Someone in another thread pointed that there's a Windows 7/8/10 fix for Discworld Noir, which is also abandonware. So I'm sharing the news here in the lair of the weirdos adventure fans.
Someone else in there said "it's the best game no one ever played", which is pretty spot on.
If you haven't played it already, there's only two reasons not to: you hate Discworld or you hate noir.
It is absolutely brilliant in every regard.

I fired up the original Broken Sword: Shadow of the templars this morning around 9am to pass some time and well... the entire day passed. Just finished the game an hour ago.

It's still an absolute master piece. The voice acting is my happy place, I could feel myself melting into my chair the longer I played with no intention of stopping.

oh man, if it's your first full playthrough you are in for a treat.

There is definitely a massive sense of nostalgia there for me, so not sure how others who are new to the series will feel about it, but for me the first two games are pretty much point-and-click perfection.

The artwork and sounds are so immersive + I just love the voice acting in both 1 + 2. Mirror gets less love on this board typically, not really sure why as I think its just as good if not a smidge better than the original game.

In particular, the guardhouse at the docks in smoking mirror is super cozy and nostalgic for me.

Giving this recommendation a hard seconding. Discworld Noir is a great time, hailing from an illustrious two game lineage (possibly more) of adventure games where you play as a werewolf -- along with Gabriel Knight 2.

The Director's Cut also comes with the option of playing the original, which I would say is the better option. The DC changes the iconic "paris in the fall" intro and in general adds superfluous content for the sake of it IMO.

For me personally I love the second game as well, the pacing of that game is phenomenal. I played it for the first time a few years back and just loved it. Plus, you can get Nico's panties so it gets a 5 point boost off that alone.

There is also a very very Britsh undertone of humour and sarcasm present in the protagonist.. which is perfect. Revolution were at the peak of their craft around this time. Being a brit myself, and living in the city they currently have an office in (york) for many years, I am biased. They're great guys.

All right, i will make sure to start the original and not the DC.

I started playing NIS' new time loop adventure game, Asatsugutori, and after a bit of a slow start I'm liking it. The premise is that the main character, Hibari, and 7 other girls wake up mysteriously in an unidentifiable building with no windows or exists. They've been kidnapped and soon after discovering this, an announcement over a loud speaker tells them that only one girl can escape, the last one surviving. The announcement also mentions that if the girls try their best they might be able to use magic. It's a set up that's very similar to other "Death Game" JADV titles like Danganronpa or the Zero Escape series. The biggest differences being that the protagonist in Asatsugutori can rewind time.

BAkGFQx.png
MWc2VoQ.png

(the game's pastel earth tones make for an appealing aesthetic)

Throughout the course of the first chapter you're either reading through dialogue, exploring in an isometric perspective, or doing some mystery puzzle solving. Like many Japanese games there's a methodically paced roll-out of mechanics, while the game slowly introduces you to its characters and world. A bit too slowly for my tastes, but I'll concede that I may have played through the early bits while bloated on Turkey and other hefty Thanksgiving foods. As the mystery picks up you're introduced to real-time segments where you have to gather & use items to pursue leads while the clock is ticking -- and while characters move throughout the facility. If you fail to solve these in time you have to rewind the loop and start over, retaining information in your inventory but losing physical objects. There's also "reasoning" sections where Hibari will work through the details of the case and you'll have to confirm facts, present evidence or make deductions to complete her line of logic. Which is standard for this sort of mystery JADV but enjoyable nonetheless. For the most part the challenge has been fairly mild, but there's been more and more thinking involved as the game progresses so I'll see how it goes with the 2nd chapter.

WbzRPxK.png
pib0DHc.png

(as the list of evidence grows and interaction opens up, the game's challenge has stepped up somewhat)

The best things about the game so far are the art, music and characters. I love the color choices and style of the game's art. Even the fashion is distinct and appealing, which is odd to say about a game where young girls are being held captive, but there it is. I do think the designs have a bit of a same-face problem but there are other elements, as well as their personalities, that make them noticeably different. Hibari is portrayed as a timid girl who is holding on to regret surrounding her father's death -- feeling partially responsible for requesting the car ride that resulted in his fatal accident. She also is dealing with further abandonment issues from her friends spreading rumors about her after the tragedy. Similarly to a favorite game of mine, Life is Strange, Asatsugutori uses it's time travel mechanic to show a timid character come into their own as they repeatedly face challenges, condition themselves to overcome them and gain confidence. I like where that aspect of the plot is going so for so I'm looking forward to seeing how it plays out.

Sam & Max: Beyond Time and Space Remastered Is Here
Save Christmas (sort of), rave with zombies, and go to Hell… today!

Hey folks! Our second Sam & Max remaster, Sam & Max: Beyond Time and Space, is now out on Nintendo Switch, Xbox, and right here on Steam. Maybe you have a few questions before you hit that buy button? Luckily we have a few answers…

Dude, where’s my discount?
Last year, when Sam & Max Save the World came out, we were able to offer a special discount to owners of the original Sam & Max Season One. We wanted to do that this time for Season Two owners, but sadly Steam doesn’t support this type of legacy discount anymore. Instead, we’re offering a Save the World + Beyond Time and Space bundle for 25% off.

Save the World + Beyond Time and Space Bundle

Includes 2 items

$29.98
Add to Cart

This is a “complete the set” bundle, which means you only pay for the items you don’t own yet
. If Sam & Max Save the World is already in your Steam library, this bundle will get you just Sam & Max: Beyond Time and Space for 25% off.
And if you don’t own either remaster yet, you can dive in headfirst with a 25% discount on both of them. This deal ends at midnight Eastern time on December 21.

For example, if you own Sam & Max Save the World, you can get Sam & Max: Beyond Time and Space for 25% off by completing the set.

Hey, wait! What about...
  • The original episodes DLC?
If you buy Sam & Max: Beyond Time and Space on Steam, you’ll get access to the original Season Two episodes as free DLC. We’re still getting this set up, but watch for it later in December. (Of course, if you already have these episodes in your Steam library, you can still access them there too.)

  • A list of all the updates in the remaster?
Around the Skunkape office (aka our Slack channel) we affectionately refer to this as the “mega-post,” and every time we think it’s finished we remember something else to add to it. We’re working on it! In the meantime, this regular-sized post lists out the biggest updates. (Spoiler: We did rerecord Bosco in this remaster, but we did not make any edits or deletions to the script before doing so. The details of why and why not are something we'll get into in the aforementioned mega-post!)

  • The soundtrack?
We’ll have this up on Steam and Bandcamp very soon! Until then, tide yourself over with “Maimtron 9000’s Pancake Breakfast,” one of the eight new tracks Jared Emerson-Johnson composed for the remaster.
