Adventure. Horror. What do ya got?

I'm in the mood for something in the vein of The Mummy (the first one). A great, grand adventure with a big dose of horror. Movies or novels are fine. Preferably from within the last decade or so.

Anyone got any recommendations?

National Treasure 1 with Nicholas Cage kinda fits in with the first Mummy movie in semi competent big adventure movies.

Man, I'm trying here but coming up short. It seems that it's sort of a neglected genre.

Not too similar, but off the top of my head, have you seen "Brothers Grimm"? I thought it was pretty action-heavy.

Straight adventure films aren't exactly what I'm looking for (there's no horror elements in that asides from Cage's acting, hahaha). Maybe epic horror adventure is a better description? I dunno, it's just the feel that The Mummy has which is distinct from something like Indiana Jones or National Treasure

Was that the one with I think Matt Damon and Heath Ledger? I think I saw it.

Hellboy films may suit you, both are quite good.

Seen them. Good stuff.

Boris Karloff?

dont ignore the best response in the thread then. Brotherhood of the Wolf.

Sunshine is the first thing that came to mind from the title, but it's not anything like the Mummy. Good movie.

Nightwatch

EDIT: Or the Blade series

Whoops, didn't mean to overlook that. I'll look into it.

Great movie. Seen it.

Any novel recommendations if films are hard to think of?

They are more mystery horror than adventure.

But I enjoyed House on Haunted Hill . There is also a sequal that is on bluray and dvd in which you can choose what happens using the branching featuers of those formats . Its quite fun .

After that watch the original on Netflix with Vincent price and enjoy how far we've come

Bringing up Vincent Price makes me think of "The last man on Earth", which makes me think of "I am Legend" with Will Smith.

I am Legend might fit the bill for you, OP.

Really though, don't watch Van Helsing in any mode but "I want to laugh at something ridiculous."

I mean, there's a scene where a werewolf smashes into a horse-drawn carriage AND IT EXPLODES IN A GOUT OF FLAME.

I'm gonna double down on Brotherhood of the Wolf. It's an adventure movie. It's got ridiculous action thanks to Mark Dacascos. There are werewolves in it. It's beautifully shot. Check that out.

I've seen Van Helsing.

The part where Dracula cries and his brides cry with him is so goddamn hilarious. The dude overacted so hard that William Shatner felt shame.

Fun movie though.

Action-Horror used to be a very big staple in the days of pulp magazines (Weird Tales and such) but not so much anymore.

Brotherhood of the Wolf is actually pretty good until the ending. Bad CGI, even for then. And interestingly enough, it's based on a real story,
only apparently a hyena, not a wolf
.

If you're down with anime, you might get a kick out of Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. There's no uguu shit, so it's pretty safe to watch.

Epic horror adventure isn't a very common genre these days, it seems.

This is a really good call, too. I was just talking about this the other day. Directed by the same guy who did Ninja Scroll, yes?

Speaking of which: Ninja Scroll is a pretty adventurous bit of horror/WTF.

Blade II. It's not exactly adventure film but they do go to many locations and imo it has that certain adventure feel.
