There's an update now according to impress watch.

http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/game/docs/20050802/advp.htm

From what I can gather it has two parts. First is general fixes:

--Changes how the BGM and SE ids are displayed
--Full change to command addition and deletion
--Something about batch deletion of action choices

Then it seems there is a Material Viewer that lets you view all the skins and play all the BGM and SEs in the program.

So since I don't have the game, can anyone update it and say if this fixes most of the major problems and lets you actual make decent games? It doesn't say anything about transparencies so that is still an issue. But otherwise what else needs fixing at this point.

The actual patch is from here:

Doesn't sound like much of an improvement, but I'll try it out soon. Hey duckroll, Jiji, can you update the English version? :P

Anyway, others have already gone to the trouble of taking screenshots of the various skins, cursors, and someone even made a medley mp3 of all the game's music :P But yeah the SE/BGM/Skin viewer program is definitely useful.

There are a couple of interesting user-made games out there. They're all in Japanese so it's not very useful for me though. I guess the English ADVP community doesn't exist.

Most of the interesting stuff is done in the sub window: you can display the values of the variables there, and even transparent sprites! Unfortunately...the sub window is TINY (it's mostly used for displaying a countdown or score) and none of that functionality can be done elsewhere!

I've taken a look at the program and can't come up with much interesting stuff which isn't simplistic as hell. Though you can definitely do something like those flash Crimson Room type thingies.

the hell is this?

Adventure Player. It's a PSP game where you make simple Myst-style adventure games where you click on buttons (like the Search Button) in order to solve puzzles (like "the hell is this?").

I've always qualified Adventure Player as a "Non-Game" (cue groaning :)). But yeah basically you use the Studio program on your PC to create a game which can be played by the UMD program on your PSP.

It's very limited, which is a damn shame.

* There are no layers/sprites, so if you want to make Japanese novel-adventure type game where you have a background and a character overlay - you need to make a picture with background only AND a picture with background and the character graphic. Obviously arcade games are out of the question (though people have made arcade-type games in the sub window).
* There are no string-handling functions.
* There are no arrays.
* Basically you use the IF-statement.... A LOT.
* You cannot print out variable values except in the sub window.
* There is no FOR loop.
* No custom skins for the interface.
* No custom sound effects.
* No custom music.

I could go on, but I won't.
