NetEase Games announces AAA single-player action adventure game Blood Message

I love how global video games are. Like the top movie of this year is a chinese movie that I bet most people outside China haven't even heard of or people here can't even name.

But Wukong still sold a respectable 5-6 million outside China, we all know and talk about it. Imagine a Belgium movie getting the international success that BG3 did.

And once china starts pumping out a truckload of AAA games to satisfy their billion population, I feel they'll be at the absolute top someday

This shit is fake as Chinese Temu shit
And Wukong is a bad copy of many games badly mixed togerher but with the nonesense monkey legend
These blatant "authentically" anti-Chinese racist hot takes are, whilst a product of the modern anti-woke political age, are rather horrid and boring as shit quite frankly…

I play games, don't make politics.

If a game is shit to me is shit. Try again with someone else
Well you clearly don't play Chinese-made games (simply on that basis) so how about you fuck off and share your banal China-ire with folk who give a shit bruv?

Game looks top tier.

Very Uncharted with Chinese setting and "swordplay action" vis-a-vis "gunplay action".

Setting and story is unfamiliar but genuinely intriguing and I hope brings to life some of China's cultural history for a global audience, whilst telling a compelling personal story.

Would love to see more gameplay depth and variety as I hope it isn't shallow and on-the-rails like Hellblade 1 or a David Cage game.

Did you even watch a second of the trailer? It's literally a completely different genre…
What is the genre? It might be in-engine, but there's nothing here that actually showcases what form of gameplay this'll take beyond scripted animations that you either just watch, or "play" using QTEs.

Interest level zero. Not really interested in anything that comes from China, honestly. But especially not this. Sure, it's pretty. But what else? Ah, it's also embarrassing,
Iike that monk waxing philosophy. The simplest statement absolutely torpedoed with faux profundery.

Holy shit, this looks step above everything graphically.
China has the best 3d artists and probably the best 3d non-realtime(?) engine engineers.
Whether they can convert it into the solid games a question, but at least they will get experience.

Best artists in general probably. The best concept arts I see on Artstation are always from Chinese

Some serious bs here
Chinese electric cars way ahead of European. ZTE Nubia Red Magic is the only phone with under-display front camera that is completely flat (Iphone look like stone-age compared to it). Half of planet dream of copying Genshin, game made by Chinese company.
Chinese made 3d anime a thing when everyone else failed, as a result they can afford making very high quality assets games, unlike Japan that still stuck with PS3 level assets.
Yes, they copied a lot as it is how you learn - starting from copying others. But in many fields they are way past this phase.
I didn't say EV.

And just because they have stolen tech and improved it like a camera doesn't mean it's still not officially stolen.

I don't know about the anime thing because like... I go outside and don't care about waifu stuff.

You are right, they do indeed make the graphics... which is entirely my point, they have all the visuals but no ingenuity or ideas to follow that up with.

Genshin is just breath of the wild with gacha waifus. Again, taking a thing and adding to it doesn't mean it's not a clone.

And they are ahead in many fields because they literally make everything for everyone; they just pick and choose all the bits that work.

Again, when a chinese game comes out that genuinely has a soul, i'll pay attention; that hasn't happened yet.

A decade ago nobody thought Chinese dev could reach this level of AAA graphics but look where they are at now.

You said they don't have their own. They do.

It's bs. They didn't stole most of the tech, it was shared with them, especially advanced ones. Yes, the used their negotiation power of huge labor market to force companies to do it, but it was official and fair way.
Cars, high-speed rails, electronics etc - they got knowledge working with others. And gained knowledge they went independent, like many others do. China now files around half of total patents and 3 times more than second place (US).
And practically every product borrow some ideas from product before it. Iphone - borrowed, botw - borrowed, balatro - just a straight compilation of 2 very old ideas.

Genshin is just breath of the wild with gacha waifus. Again, taking a thing and adding to it doesn't mean it's not a clone.
It's not botw. It does has some similar elements (like botw has towers), but it's not a botw with waifus.

Again, when a chinese game comes out that genuinely has a soul, i'll pay attention; that hasn't happened yet.
You having a prejudice doesn't mean that those games don't have soul.

You dont think Wukong is creative/Unique?

Arguably my most anticipated game of the year... But in no way is it more impressive than that Phantom Blade Zero gameplay trailer. Noooo way. Animations alone are in a different league in PBZ.

Onimusha and Ninja Gaiden 4 both look better and have better animations than what you posted.
NG4 most certainly will have better gameplay, Phantom looks like yet another Soulslike the textures even look exactly like something From would have put together.

These Eastern AAA games are no-BS, focused on the right things, and continue to push the envelope graphically. Straight up embarrassing the big Western publishers and I'm loving it

I'm baffled to no end considering some of the negative comments on here. Users on here always say they don't want any politics in their games. Yet so many people on here are inserting their own political bias into these conversations. It seems like some of you really are part of the problem. Why judge the game by where it's coming from instead of the quality of its showings?
Anyways, the game looks great to me. It looks like a mix of God of War, Uncharted/Tomb Raider, The Last of Us and Ghost of Tsushima due to the camera angles, some cinematic segments as well as the combat.

Few concerns judging by this trailer:
1. Animations during the combat might seem too long, this might disrupt the flow of some combat segments.
2. Due to it being similar to the aforementioned games, build variety might be an issue.
3. The climbing and traversal looks similar to the Tomb Raider reboot, where Lara always gets into some trouble, taking an inhuman amount of beating and yet looking fine moments later. If there's only a few of these segments it's fine. But too many of these will start to get annoying fast imo.

The positives of this trailer:
1. Heavy focus on story.
2. Graphics look amazing.
3. Quality of the animations looks great.
4. Combat feels weighty and realistic.
5. Environmental design looks diverse.
6. Characters look interesting.
7. Music sounds awesome.

Its Japan making bland and soulless games. Not China. Nothing but ugly ass PS3 looking games and generic anime trash out of Japan. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Meanwhile in China. FIRST TIME game makers are giving us games like Black Myth: Wukong and THIS

This game legitimately looks more exciting than any character action game out of Japan in at least 10 years. And its from some random Chinese studio on their first time making a AAA game.. Wait til these guys get comfortable and start pumping out sequels. Gonna be even better.

They work fast, have way more talent, and dont need 300 million to make a game.. Black Myth cost 40 million.

A 40 million dollar Japanese/ Western game would like like a PS3 title and take 8 years to develop.

WTH you talking about??? Most of Chinese games have taken inspiration from From Soft games and Japanese anime style (Genshin, Wuwa), China came late to the party, they're doing great, but don't act like they re-invented or revolutionized the art style or game mechanic

Game looks like they stole the combat from The Last of Us with an Asian theme. On brand for NetEase. Graphics looked decent.

Additional info on Reddit.

Hello, dear anonymous messengers, this is the action-adventure game "Blood Message" that focuses on small people in the big history.

Yesterday, we released our first trailer and were honored to have received everyone's love. Within 24 hours of its release, it had 10 million views on Bilibili and more than 20 million views on short video platforms such as Douyin (TikTok CN) and Kuaishou.

Such a sensational effect further strengthened our determination to develop Blood Message.

We are very happy to see a large number of players expressing their support and curiosity to us online.

We are grateful to see that everyone agrees with the quality of the game presented in the trailer;

We have also seen the concerns and doubts that everyone has expressed about whether the stand-alone games produced by NetEase ThunderFire are pure, and we accept them humbly;

We also saw everyone's appreciation and praise for our choice of the theme of Shazhou Returning to Tang, which encouraged us greatly;

Today, we will have more in-depth exchanges and explanations with you based on some hot issues.

The question we were asked most often yesterday was:

1. Is the Blood Message trailer a real game or CG?

The answer is that all of them are real game engine footage, with zero CG content.

However, although they are all real game screens, the game screens directly operated by players account for about 30%, and the operation interface is removed from this part to enhance the immersiveness of the screen itself.

Overall, the trailer is roughly composed of two parts: "70% cutscenes" and "30% actual combat scenes".

The actual game screen refers to the actual screen seen in the game based on the player's operation. In this trailer, for example, several combat, sneaking, climbing, carjacking, riding and other action scenes are all actual combat demonstrations.

Real-time cutscenes refer to the images that are rendered in real time in the game based on the story that the player is experiencing, in order to explain the plot or the emotional changes of the characters. In this trailer, for example, the oath of allegiance in front of the city gate; the male protagonist pushing the door to enter the house to check the letter left by his son; and the end of the film holding a lamp to illuminate the murals, etc. are all cutscenes.

It is essentially real game footage, because it is integrated into the player's gaming experience and is generated in real time within the game based on the player's character model and the surrounding environment.

Of course, in order to present the logic of the plot, the trailer has been edited and arranged, and there is no strict correspondence between the picture and the narration. The voice in some shots comes directly from the character's voice, the voice in some shots is the character's inner monologue, and some are narrations that are not directly related to the picture. Some players pointed out that "some characters in the trailer don't open their mouths when speaking" is exactly for this reason, because in the official game, the characters don't speak at this time, and the voice is added uniformly during editing.

2. The second problem is that some players questioned the protagonist's "strange attire" and "looking like a foreigner."

It should be made clear here that the protagonist is undoubtedly from the Tang Dynasty. But considering his age, the Tang Dynasty had long ceased to exist in Hexi when he was born. Dunhuang Shazhou is a gathering point for the integration of multi-ethnic cultures. The protagonist himself is a small person who makes a living in Shazhou. The survival experience and wisdom of various ethnic groups are reflected in him. The protagonist's whole body decoration has strict and detailed sources. We have noticed that many bloggers on Bilibili have made in-depth interpretations of this point, and we will find opportunities to introduce it to you in detail in the future.

3. The third hot topic is whether "Blood Message" is an open world game?

We would also like to formally respond here: No, "Blood Message" is a linear narrative game.

Blood Message is neither an open world nor a soul-like game. It is a narrative-driven, action-combat-focused, stand-alone game that includes adventure puzzle elements.

As the first stand-alone game of NetEase Thunderfire, we did not mix too many concepts or integrate too many genres in Blood Message. We wanted to focus on making a good game and telling a good story.

A Chinese story , a story about Chinese values of survival, returning home and unity.

In addition, we also noticed that after the release of the Blood Message trailer, some players questioned the purity of Thunderfire's development of stand-alone games.

We understand people's distrust of the online game giant NetEase, but Thunderfire has been established for 18 years and we have actually been changing.

We hope to use Blood Message to repair the rift in everyone's trust in us.

4. If it's a stand-alone game, it can't be a mobile game.

In addition, at the beginning of the trailer, the old man's voice-over mentioned that "When the Tang Dynasty was still around, the lights on the Silk Road stretched from the Western Regions all the way to Chang'an." The word "Silk Road" in this sentence has caused some players to laugh because it is a modern term. We think your laughter is justified.

We actually considered using words like "trade route" or "desolate route" when we were making the game, but we finally decided to use "Silk Road" because the purpose of developing Return to Tang is to tell a good Chinese story and spread a bit of Chinese culture. The Silk Road is a very important cultural concept , and it is easy for players at home and abroad to understand without any barriers.

Finally, I want to report to you that the trailer of Blood Message yesterday also caused a lot of discussion overseas. We have won millions of views on overseas video platforms. And we finally enjoyed the treatment of "players from various countries asked the Chinese game Blood Message to provide Spanish/Turkish/Arabic/Portuguese in the comment area"!

Frankly speaking, it feels very happy to see a group of foreign players eager to learn about our history.

This has further strengthened our determination to develop Blood Message, because: what is national is also global.

Good things will never be buried. Good stories should be heard by the whole world.

Please pay attention to Blood Message, support the globalization of Chinese games, and work together to build the Tang Dynasty of our generation.

Blood Message dev even sponsor Asmongold to watch the trailer.
Looks like they are well aware of his influence.

I expect negative press from the woke media because of this.

Only just heard about this.

+Great trailer which put this firmly on my radar
+Excellent visuals and design

But let's how the final game plays, looks and performs.

The trailer looks 95% scripted.

That's not how any of this works. Most people don't even know what Asmongold even has to say about this Blood Message game.

They paid him to watch a trailer of a game?

I take it he is NOT a shill?

Nah, don't see the appeal. But that's just me, I'm sure a bunch of people will like it, kinda like Wukong I guess 🤷‍♂️
