After using the Switch 2 for a week I'm glad I have a Steam Deck

After playing Switch 2 for a week it made me realize how great the Steam Deck is.

On the hardware side, the OLED screen Steam Deck pummels the Switch 2. I remember hearing in previews that the Switch 2 screen was great but I strongly disagree with that due to noticeable ghosting and washed out picture. I like the concept of Joy Cons (the way they attach magnetically is awesome), but they are still uncomfortable to use and the lack of dpad makes some games unplayable IMO. I refuse to use the analog stick for 2D games like a filthy casual. The Steam Deck is just so much more comfortable to hold.

On the software side its usual woes of console gaming. Yes, the Switch has an amazing catalog of games. Unfortunately many of them are handicapped with crappy settings that require a developer to update. That means we're left to beg online and wonder if/when a patch will come for these games. All so they don't look like ass.

Take Dave the Diver for example, great game... locked at 30fps until the dev updates it. People are left to beg for a patch. Now do that with the majority of your Switch library. Disgusting.

I dunno man. I won't call it buyers remorse but I'm feeling a little unenthused. Anyone with me?

So you're just illustrating the difference between playing on a console (convenience, 1st party game libary, ease of use) vs PC (customization, tweaking, modding).

Not exactly groundbreaking stuff.

I don't own either but to me the deck looks like it has way more value. Better games, more affordable games, better screen, ect. If I was buying a handheld it would be a deck hands down.

Can't really say as I don't have a SteamDeck. I'm sure the OLED screen is much nicer though. I'd happily have paid more for a OLED version of the Switch 2.

It's a huge difference over my old launch day Switch (1) though.

Switch 2 is very nice hardware but the screen stinks, and it has all the drawbacks of walled garden console gaming in the year of our lord 2025. Mario Kart is great but I really bought this for Donkey Kong and whatever Monolith / Vanillaware is cooking. I will be butthurt if they release an OLED model before the games release that I really want. But yeah, I am already back to using my Deck more. It's such a great device but I don't wanna sound like a vegan.

Good for you, Steam Deck is personally way to big and huge for me to hold, switch 2 is perfect size and I can play old games like red faction in 60fps now with gyro or zelda

I love mine but it's true that if you dont play in optimal condition, the screen is shit (I tried to play outside it was almost impossible)

Don't have a Steam deck so I can't compare.

How do you know someone's a vegan steam deck owner?

Switch 2 launch line up is bizarre.

Not sure if calling it a lineup makes sense when its practically just 1 game.

Never seen a console launch like this.

I've seen a few like this. Ironically (or not?) they've all been Nintendo. EDIT: Now, I should say the N64 *did* have Mario64, so ... awesome game. But I remember SNES with Mario World, PilotWings and F-Zero. And that was it for a while.

Most people buying a Switch 2 probably don't care about or expect 60fps games. Hell, many PC gamers play at 30fps on the deck unless it's something really old.

I've only really played mine docked, I think the screen isn't very good at all. I have an Oled Deck & Switch already and have been spoiled though. I do not regret my purchase. I am having a blast with BOTW/TOTK and Mario Oddysey now of all things, the upgrade to that in particular is honestly the best of all of them imo.

The Deck Oled does beat it overall though. They can coexist together.

Can I customize external design and grip??
What do you mean? Yes (Amazon already has a bunch and the GOATs of SW grips are releasing soon), and Switch 2 will probably have more grip options then Steam Deck just as the Switch did.

The Switch also has tons of shells available and was easy as hell to change. I switched my OLED joycons out for all white with an actual dpad in like 15 minutes.

So at least the grip I can for both and what I quoted was talking just about software. :messenger_grinning:

Oled screens are not cheap but Nintendo is cheap there was no chance of a oled screen. Third party joycons can fix ur comfort issues, Nintendo is about exclusives anyway, no one should be playing third party games on it,i can't wait steam deck 2, but I'm worried the performance is not there on AMD just yet.

So basically the same reasons some people like PC over Consoles. That's cool.. everyone has their own opinions.

Me personally I never play handhelds. I will rarely ever play my switch 2 in handheld mode which is why I never really cared about the steam deck. I think all of them are way too big to be a proper handheld. 🤷‍♂️

There will be games that wont play on the steam deck though that will on the switch 2. the new COD will probably be one. all those games that have issues with anti-cheats so that would be a concern for a lot of people when buying hardware for a handheld.

Yes, with consoles now having BC as standard having to rely on developers to go back and patch games for higher settings and/or fps is a negative. It would be nice if developers had a fps cap toggle as standard for future consoles.

Also I wished Nintendo launched a Oled model for $50 extra at launch. But I guess they realise lots of people would simply pay extra for a refresh down the line.

Do you like bananas? This is why I got my Switch 2. Not for anything 3rd party, personally.

I'm someone that bought a lot of third party games on Switch before I got a Steam Deck. Just sucks being at the mercy of developers for a better experience. This includes a lot of Nintendo games as well.

All in on DK btw. Looks amazing.

This. You buy Nintendo hardware for their games.

I bought a SW2 for first party titles and for stuff like JRPGs that I would normally play on PS or PC (JRPGs I almost always play on PS as they just feel at home on a console for me) because now I don't have to worry about the difference being as staggering as before.

I'm not a handheld person either really so my Switch 2 will be relegated to the dock 80-90% of the time.

I bought a Steam Deck mainly because I wanted to give emulation a chance again and wanted the ability to dock it (I had a SD but returned it because I never used it) and unfortunately it mainly sits there. I'm not even sure it's charged.

That being said. The GC emulation in SW2 is bad and I think I'm just gonna emulate WWHD through CEMU instead as I think that's a better version overall.

If I buy a Nintendo Switch 2, it's only to support the physical format, but if they start pushing the digital envelope... I WOULDN'T SEE THE POINT.

I'd rather get an Asus Rog Ally X or a Steam Deck OLED and pirate the games.

On the other hand it's funny how BoTW and ToTK Youtube ads focus on framerate, HDR and Loadtimes...

When I upgraded from gameboy to gameboy advance, gameboy games ran the same
When I upgraded from PS1 to PS2, PS1 games ran the same
When I upgraded from Gamecube to Wii, Gamecube games games ran the same
When I upgraded from PS2 to PS3, PS2 games ran the same
When I upgraded from gameboy advance to Nintendo DS, gameboy advance ran the same
When I upgraded from Nintendo DS to Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo DS games ran the same
When I upgraded from PS3 to PS4, I had to keep my PS3
When I upgraded from Switch to Switch 2, Switch 1 games ran better without doing anything →→→→ AH YES THIS ONE IS THE BAD ONE, GLAD I GOT A STEAM DECK HEHE

if you dont care about resolution and just want a perfect gameplay experience. the GameCube mod scene is crazy simple these days. You can get one pretty cheap as well off ebay.

I just wanted to point out that if Switch 2 was the most powerful gaming device ever imagined and have more power than your home PC x10000 then it still wouldn't resolve either of your problems.

You wanted an OLED screen and you only like to play in 60fps. We agree. This was always allowed. Most of us play on an OLED TV and only play the many 60fps games on the system and also own a PS5 or PC or Xbox and play almost all cross gen on it. Many(most?) of us only use Switch 2 in docked so this is completely irrelevant for us and has been deeply ingrained in our knowledge for decades. We play Nintendo for the exclusives. It keeps being forgotten so we have to keep saying it. The only use for portable mode is so we can grind souls in elden ring while we take a shit. Nobody is playing this on the bus bro. It's humiliating. Plane rides are fine.

Even though I hear the Switch 2 beats steam deck handily in every other way that isn't a universal console vs pc or OLED argument and also how much is a steam deck oled?

I played on a Switch 1 then Switch OLED for years. Much worse device. Still wasn't even tempted by a steam deck, but okay.

Why did it take you to own a Switch 2 to realize these commonly known things? Surely you realized these two very obvious things before purchase.
