After using the Switch 2 for a week I'm glad I have a Steam Deck

As far a OLED VRR goes, there are already variable refresh rate OLED phones going to 120hz, so the technology exist at smaller levels. Oleds do use more power than LCD. Thats another reason why it probably didnt launch, sw2 life is already low. The OLED Switch 2 if there probably is one eventually would probably have a revised chipset as the OLED SW1 did. But you are right to bring up the power draw point, I don't know how well that would work with the system in portable mode usage time. Honestly, hadn't even really thought about that side of it for the sw2 much until now knowing how fast the battery drains as is in portable mode.

The OLED in the Deck uses less power than the horrible LCD screen (according to Valve, it is part of the reasons for increased batery life), and it's a little bit larger too. Even w/ HDR it still uses less power on average.

Obviously displaying a black image, the OLED has a huge advantage too, as all pixels are turned off and it is using next to 0 power, while the opposite is true of LCD.

Well, I guess keep enjoying your indie library running at medium settings. And please, complaining about waiting for devs to patch Switch games while praising the Deck is bad comedy. Oh, and us real ones only use DDR pads for 2D games.
99% of Deck games run on max settings and don`t need patches from devs. wth!

the ergonomics are the biggest issue with the Switch 2... even tho the Deck is heavier and bulkier, I can play on it for much longer without issues.

I really hope Nyxi or another decent manufacturer will release ergonomic replacement joycons with full sized sticks soon.

and by decent I'm pretty much saying anyone but Hori... fuck Hori... it's almost impressive how bad their controllers are compared to most modern third party controllers. they somehow still feel like those shitty "give it to your little brother" 10€ controllers from 2004, while the rest of the industry is rivaling or succeeding first party offerings now. their Switch 1 Split Pad Pro is the worst 3rd party controller I owned in a decade. impressively cheap feeling, awful sticks and lacking in every single feature lol.

Another thread where Steam Deck owners let everybody know how much better it is then everything else.

I've been waiting for this. I missed the other 10,000 threads.

I mean its like an objective fact, bro. I can play my entire childhood library of games on top of being able to play new games. It's also a functional Linux computer that you can mod games with.

Don't care, i payed 600€ for a Switch 2 Mario Kart bundle and a Pro Controller, i would've payed even more money to play new Nintendo games.

I know, i know I'm part of the Nintendo problem, but it's the honest truth.

Funny this is it all comes down to opinions.
However I and most disagree with what the OP is saying as S2 already is passing the SD that has been out multiple years.
Numerous negative threads but not close to touching those who bought and will support it.

My understanding was the APU went from 7nm to 6nm which was the largest power savings as well as a larger battery for the OLED deck. While the OLED can save more energy in darker scenes, brighter scenes (see Nintendo games) will use more. There isn't a one is absolutely better for energy consumption.

More time to play
Steam Deck OLED has 30-50% more battery life. We fit a bigger battery into the case, and the OLED display draws less power. Add in an updated, more efficient AMD APU and you have way more time to play your favorites.

They say it pretty plainly there, OLED less power than LCD. They even said that factors in the HDR too back when it released.

They increased the battery from 40Wh to 50Wh, so doing nothing else that's a 25% longer play time too and is by far the biggest reason for the longer battery. 7 > 6nm might account for ~1W savings, the screen is probably similar I'd imagine.

But how do you deal with not having the excitement of the three "new" old titles added to the subscription once a month that you have to keep paying for to play.

Fair enough.

What settings are you using for Mario Kart World on your deck?

Why would they want to play MKW when you can play Stellar Blade on the Deck?

I kid of course, but there's a lot more games on the Deck which aren't on the Switch 2, than games on the Switch 2 which aren't on the Deck.

Well all of the games on Deck I can already play on my gaming laptop.

But I can't play Mario Kart World or the next big N exclusive game on Steam Deck

So we appear to be at an impasse

My friend grabbed a Switch 2 at launch. Compared to the Steam Deck, it is heavy and uncomfortable. It really only seems to be a slightly bigger Switch. Good thing you can dock it and play it on a TV with a decent controller.

It must just feel heavier in your hands due to ergonomics because Steam Deck is heavier (on paper). I had a set of $10 detachable/dockable grips arrive the day before launch so I was ready for portable mode from day one. I can't really fault them for making the slimmest portable they can and letting us bolt on whatever grips or special joycon we want from there.

All I know is games like tears of the kingdom are terrific, being able to play on the smaller handheld screen wasn't for me though, not using it as a handheld, I wish Nintendo would abandon hybrid consoles.

After playing Switch 2 for a week it made me realize how great the Steam Deck is.

On the hardware side, the OLED screen Steam Deck pummels the Switch 2. I remember hearing in previews that the Switch 2 screen was great but I strongly disagree with that due to noticeable ghosting and washed out picture. I like the concept of Joy Cons (the way they attach magnetically is awesome), but they are still uncomfortable to use and the lack of dpad makes some games unplayable IMO. I refuse to use the analog stick for 2D games like a filthy casual. The Steam Deck is just so much more comfortable to hold.

On the software side its usual woes of console gaming. Yes, the Switch has an amazing catalog of games. Unfortunately many of them are handicapped with crappy settings that require a developer to update. That means we're left to beg online and wonder if/when a patch will come for these games. All so they don't look like ass.

Take Dave the Diver for example, great game... locked at 30fps until the dev updates it. People are left to beg for a patch. Now do that with the majority of your Switch library. Disgusting.

I dunno man. I won't call it buyers remorse but I'm feeling a little unenthused. Anyone with me?

So Steam deck is better because you have the privilege of tweaking games instead of them being intentionally optimized by the developers? And because Switch 1 games require patches for games with capped framerates it's "worse"?

BC on Switch 2 is amazing and all sure but I'm more interested in the New games coming out either Exclusively on Switch 2 or ONLY on Switch 2 and not Switch 1...and it's those games that Steam deck won't have shit on. A year from now this whole Steam deck vs Switch 2 thing will be moot.
More like there already.

I really don't have any interest in handheld PCs because I have a desktop PC... Most of the games I play, I prefer to use m+kb. I bought the Switch to play Nintendo games. These Steam Deck "loyalists" should just stop speaking on behalf of PC players.

Wait, Dave the Diver is only 30 FPS on Switch? I don't understand that tbh. Game looks like it should run 60FPS on the Wii... I have it on my Steam Deck and didn't think a second thought that would run bad when I got it. Unoptimized to say the least.

I have high applause of Xbox with the smart delivery thing. Free upgrades everywhere! Only one that did it right on consoles, yet they're the ones dying in the console space, sucks.
also sigh, another Steam Deck VS Switch thread. Different uses people! I do agree with the promise it sucks wanting a game upgraded though.

that's fair OP. Switch 2 is going to take time to build value the same way switch 1 did, but even then it's not going to be for everyone

Steam deck is a great system objectively as you can do a lot with it, but it's also not for everyone. It has zero appeal to myself and I consider it a waste of my money the way someone else might consider the switch 2 a waste of theirs

Except I can play most of those games on my PS5. Me and most people get Nintendo systems because it has games that you can't get anywhere else.

I have PS5 for multiplatform games and I have Switch 2 for first and 3rd party exclusives.
