Age Of Wonders 4 announced today. Releases May 2023

I had absolutely no idea this was in development and Im pumped...Love me some Planetfall!

As a console gamer it is awesome to be getting more PC strategy games. For Xbox we have Company of Heroes 3 and two Age of Empires games along with Age of Wonders 4 - all this year.

Anno 1800 coming this spring too.

Holy shit, this is big news for me.

Age of Wonders 3 + expansions is my top TBS game of all time. And since Age of Wonders: Planetfall was such a great game on Xbox as well as PC I'll probably be double dipping for this one too. I have thousands of hours in the series as a whole, and this entry will no doubt add to that significantly.

I tried hard to get into AoW3 on multiple occasions and bounced off because it wasn't Civ. It's like the perfect game for my tastes too. Fantasy + 4X? Hell yeah. Maybe this one will grab me...

I still need to play the original. I think I'll finally get it on Steam and play it.

Funny story I actually bought the original when it came out in 2001 since I thought it had cool box art, and never played it. Eventually I sold it on Ebay.

Lets go. I had no idea this was happening.

Cool news! I wanted to take the chance to ask the people who has played some games of this series: which one is your favorite?

I've only played the first one and thought it was pretty good, so I'm interested in hearing about it's sequels.

Might want to also get a unit balance mod. Warlock's Ruleset is the classic one (though also needs the 64-bit patch, since it's really old), but there are newer ones as well (though most are designed for multiplayer; yes, people still play AoW1 multiplayer).

They're all pretty good (though Planetfall can be a bit of an acquired taste, due to the different setting). I'd say baseline AoW2 is the weakest entry, if you aren't counting vanilla AoW3 (AoW3 should really be played with all expansions).

Finally started playing AoW1...holy cow, how did i miss out on this game all this time? Its like HoMM3 but with higher res and better graphics and sound!

I think Shadow Magic is the best balance between them all. Beautiful graphics and excellent music still today.

I've played all of them (though, admittedly, only completely finished 1, and almost finished SM). I'd say 1 has the most developed campaign, Shadow Magic is the most feature-complete of the standalone, non-DLC, titles, while 3 and Planetfall are the most mechanically advanced (Planefall in particular with its unit upgrade items, which keep lower tier troops still moderately useful later on).

So I started playing AoW1..got through a few maps and my thoughts are, wow, this is one of the best looking, best sounding 2D PC games I've ever seen. In fact it's hard for me to think of anything else right now that comes close to it.

The game is also really hard and has a steep learning curve. It's like HoMM3 with better tactical battles.

Honestly if I discovered this game at a younger age, I would have totally obsessed over it and played it to death. It's exactly my kind of game.
But being older now, I'm afraid of getting into a game like this and never having the time to finish it....so I'm kind of torn right now if I should continue playing it...

It's honestly impressive how a game studio's very first game was such a solid experience.
Sure, there is noticeable corner cutting; the sound effects are laughable, and very obviously come from stock libraries. However, the music is both good and memorable, the mechanics are sound (if basic), the campaign is very nicely done (with good twists and turns), and multiplayer is still used today (by the folks over at Heavengames).

pramod pramod sounds like you are having fun. If I were you I wouldn't worry about finishing anything and just play some custom maps. :)

Yeah I'm definitely having fun, still going through the basic campaign and learning.
I think the coolest thing I've discovered so far are the "unique" creatures you can find and join your party, and you can even carry them over to the next stages.
I think so far I found a Dark Elf and an Undead Dragon.
Really neat feature that wasn't in HoMM3.
Also since you can only have 8 members max in your party it makes you try to create the most powerful and versatile 8 man party. Lots of fun.

The Wizard Kings return in the new story trailer for Age of Wonders 4, launching on May 2, 2023 for PC, PlayStation®5, and Xbox Series X and S. The Premium Edition is available now for pre-orders on all platforms, including additional in-game cosmetic options and the game's Expansion Pass.

There are a bunch of new "HANDS-ON" previews doing the rounds in the last two days, incidentally.
