I have octo II in my backlog so no hurry to get this, specially being key card trash and probably no upgrade path like DQ I + II if you want a real physical version

Based on description it's not….then again I never played the mobile game.
At best we could call it a remake of the mobile game. I haven't played it either so I'll just wait and see. It has the same story and battle system. They are adding to it with a redone script, expanded narrative elements, tweaked combat, and city building.

Publishers shouldn't be allowed to use key cards for any games where they're ordering more than 100,000 copies. Feels like they're abusing the system.

Just. Fuck man. Can Square take this style and write one sweeping epic like old school RPGs instead of this somewhat of a spiritual successor to Saga Frontier?

Its not too much to ask.

Gonna rewatch the trailer in a few days. Elliot got me too hyped so that this initially looked worse than Octo 2 to me.

The idea of base building will never not turn me off from a game.

Edit:

Just rewatched and realized the last shot was showing all of the heroes from the previous games.

Seems like the other two will be mandatory to get full enjoyment here.

I do like you get to make your own main hero. Really cool.

The idea of playing both octo 1&2 by December to then play this though? Yeah I'm out…

I have mixed feelings. On the one hand, I love OT 1 & 2 and think they're as good as Final Fantasy at its best. YEAH THAT'S RIGHT SHUT UP

On the other, game key cards or whatever are just horrible.

And on the third hand...is this a boosted port of the mobile game or not? The discounted price ($49.99) seems to suggest so. And is the mobile game any good? This isn't a dealbreaker to me but I want to know if I should set my expectations for "biggest and best Octopath ever" or "a fun side story with good music."

EDIT: Website has this to say:

If you played the mobile title, OCTOPATH TRAVELER: Champions of the Continent, the game's setup may sound a little familiar. That's because OCTOPATH TRAVELER 0 is inspired by story elements and gameplay ideas from that game.

This new entry in the OCTOPATH TRAVELER series has been designed as full-fledged console and PC RPG. It takes the acclaimed story from the mobile release but reworks it to add new story content and streamlines the overall story for a more compelling experience.

It features a new script with entirely new narrative elements, including new backstories for playable characters) , as well full voice acting that brings the many twists and turns home more effectively.

Similarly, OCTOPATH TRAVELER: Champions of the Continent featured battles with 8-character parties. OCTOPATH TRAVELER 0 takes that idea and refines it to create even more strategically satisfying skirmishes.
It also brings entirely new features, such as the town building to restore your hometown - a substantial new element to the game that's fun and rewarding in equal measure.

In short, it's the best of both worlds - the amazing story and ideas of the mobile release combined with the gameplay and design that fans have come to love from the console and PC games. It doesn't matter whether you played Champions of the Continent or not - you're getting a new experience either way.
So, it sounds to me like a half-old/half-new thing. Again, not a dealbreaker since I've always been interested in CotC but it'd be good to set your expectations to something a little lower than OT3.

Your second statement is the issue. This all is on Nintendo.

For Octopath sure, but we're also seeing large games that would fit on the 64GB cart also be key cards. Yakuza 0, for instance, is like a 50GB download and Sega absolutely cheaper out and used a keycard.

The issue is both, but the amount of blame that gets assigned is based on the game in question. In this instance, Nintendo can eat more shit than square.

In Y0's case, Nintendo and Sega can eat an equal amount of shit.

OT2 was a much better game than OT1, but there is still room to improve. Some things I would like to see for OT0:
  • Better storytelling
  • More natural sounding dialogue, along with better English voice acting
  • More party interaction (OT2 did better with this, but still needs more)
  • Better sidequest design

Octopath Traveler II was insanely good and ended up being one of my favorite RPGs ever. I thought I'd for sure be waiting for a lot longer for another game in the series, but apparently not.

Something feels a bit different about this one in terms of grandeur and... the post above about the mobile team handling it explains it. Expectations are still high, though.

The first one was just so boring that I couldn't bring myself to try the second one despite hearing it was a lot better.

Was hoping for a modern FF6 type of game and got something that really seemed half baked. Turns out I was looking for Expedition 33 all along.

Same here. I loved the demo but it ended being one of the most boring and disappointing JRPGs I've played. Couldn't find the will to continue once I got to the chapter 2s. Everyone says OT2 is better but I haven't tried it yet.

I bought 2, and honestly I had my fill with 1. I kind stopped because the gameplay is just not changing, you're basically just waiting to earn those skill points to do a strong attack. Doesn't feel that rewarding and very much the same as the first one.

All this Direct would have been better not being there, and instead we got a Metroid Prime 4 release date.

Octopath II was my game of the year 2023, and not many games have hit that special feeling playing through it like it since then, so I'm beyond thoroughly excited to see a new game announced haha

Reminder that Octo 2 had the best track of all time.

Partitio's theme is excellent (honestly all of them are... except maybe yours, Temenos)
but for the cast, I know I gotta give it to Castti's theme, myself

The entire soundtrack to Octopath II is genuinely one of the best of all time, Yasunori Nishiki *easily* took a rightful spot as one of my top favorite composers and arrangers

Got the whole series day 1

(Even triple dipped for Octopath 1 lol)

but we not getting that collector's edition bruv lol That is just too much money and no steelbook.

Day 1 for the vanilla PS5 version.

Same. I love the gameplay and thats about it. I felt the story was really boring and for a story about many people, it felt like their actual communications with each other was soulless and pointless, like you start meeting different party members and it like they don't know each other exist and then start telling you this whole ass fucking story about their lives, little input from like several fucking people standing around them lol So it ends up feeling like they are telling individual stories and seem to behave like the world doesn't exist around them.

Its not the best story for sure, but like FFV, I love the battle system enough to keep playing.

This is addressed some what in OT2, they communicate more, but doesn't really have it woven in the story like a normal JRPG. So your points are valid.

Yeah totally agree, it felt like 8 really mediocre/bad JRPG stories interleaved with each other. And the interactions between characters (which take place in some different dimension) are just the most bland, shallow scenes where you can practically predict what they'll say just based on their archetype/profession.

TBH I also hated how the field actions were implemented, because it basically just meant you had to revisit towns/dungeons multiple times to do everything. Like "well shit, here's a locked treasure chest, guess I have to come back to this dungeon again with the guy who can unlock treasure chests". What's the point? Just adds tedium.

anyway I'll probably end up giving 2 a shot when it's cheap and I'm desperate for something to play. Hope I manage to enjoy it more.

This game looks absolutely fantastic. Character customization, village building, and it's the traditional Octopath turn-based goodness we all know and love. Can't wait to see more, and hopefully it comes out on Xbox Series same day as Switch 2.

I need my 4K/60 fps goodness and achievements.
