Age of Wonders III |OT| Follow The Leader

That's awesome. Good for them! :)

I finally broke down and pre-ordered it a little while ago, which is something I very rarely do, but the various YouTube videos completely sold me on the game. Actually, I've never even played an Age of Wonders title before, but this really gives the impression of being a labour of love. I hope I'm not fooling myself.

I've heard pretty much unanimous praise for the game from strategy fans, at least overall. There's been a pretty big upswing in fantasy strategy games in recent years (Warlock 1/2, Eador, Fallen Enchantress, HoMM VI), but this seems to be the most anticipated.

Compression perhaps?

GOG version shows now as 1.9GB. Downloading now after some hiccups. (might be biggest selling new game in GOG history)

Attempting to download the DD from GOG using their downloader results in "Unable to fetch data, try again later!"

Sorta wish I bought from Steam now.

:(((

I don't think I'm able to express just how much of my teenage years I wasted on the Age of Wonders games.

To have a third, after all this time, is nothing less than divine intervention.
You do realize that this makes Notch your deity?

Okay I figured out how to fix the fetching problem - (Edit: from gog.com) go to Support > Age of Wonders 3 > Website issue: game not displayed on my account and refresh your game list from there. Solved the issue perfectly. Should also solve "game not listed in account" problems.

I guess the problem for me was that my games list linked to the AoW3 preorder instead of AoW3 itself. Once it refreshed the game was listed in my account and I can download it normally.

Hooray!

Having trouble getting the download to start for the Deluxe Edition on GOG. Guess I'll wait a few minutes.

I wonder if they'll bring back the Elven DLC down the road for people who didn't preorder the game. Sounds like a pretty substantial thing to tie to preorders. In any case, glad I got it.

Yep. Working now and was coming here to post the fix.

Sorry for my grumpiness GOG.

It's official, this game is better than Minecraft.

Oh, that fix totally worked. Downloading now.

Hopefully, I'll like this kind of game. Can't even remember the last time I tried a new genre of game.

Edit: And... installed. Guess I'll check it out after I grab lunch.

I can't believe you never played this type of game. It's my favorite genre. You have a wealth of amazing games just waiting to be discovered.

I saw these sorts of games coming out in the late '90s, but I just lumped them in with all the generic RTS shlock that was coming out at the time, because the aesthetics were almost always dreadful. Just didn't seem interesting. Something about AoE III is just really striking, though, so I figured I might as well give it a shot. Exciting times, yo.

So far so good. Gave my brand-new rig more of a workout than I anticipated though. Worked it harder than GalCiv3, which makes no sense.

Curse you all with good download speeds! I have a couple hours left. 2.6GB download on Steam, I suppose the soundtrack adds a bit.

I just finished installing and took a quick peek at the game. I can tell I'm in for a great time already, and I can't wait to dive into it more later on. I am puzzled by the performance though. Tactical combat was a smooth 60 fps, but scrolling the world map is very choppy, and I'm running a GTX 670. I'll have to play with the settings a bit I guess.

Odd considering even the recommended system requirements aren't very much these days. If the settings don't help I'm sure they'll release a patch in a couple of days if the issue's widespread.

Same problem here, I have it with Heroes V too. I'll try high-settings tomorrow.

Game seems to be great, just one hour in. I loved the idea of Civ meets Heroes (never played originals) and the art sold me even more. Truth to be told, art seems to be weaker than I thought from the videos but it's still pretty captivating.

Sigh, was interested in the limited edition, then saw that Steam is a requirement and DLC is possible. Totally ruined it for me. Is it really that hard to release a normal retail copy without that garbage?

Steam is not required. You can buy this on GOG.

Regarding the game, I didn't know they reduced the Army limit from 8 to 6. I kind of liked bigger armies. Looks like that number is fixed too and not able to be expanded via research, etc.

He is talking about the retail limited edition in his country. All retail copies are Steamworks.

How does this work, exactly? If I have an adjacent stack of 6, can I bring them in a battle?

I attacked a castle, and in the pre-battle screen it looked like there were 12 slots for attackers, and 18 slots for defenders?

Yep, it's a shame...and apparently the DVDs don't even contain the data. That would mean several days of constant loading with this internet connection which is not tolerable.

That's weak for a PC exclusive game. Particularly a strategy game. I'm sure they'll fix it though.

Yeah, they've said on the community forums that they're working on a patch. Apparently they don't have monitors of such a res in their office, and neither did their testers.

Their office sucks :P
(But seriously, I hope they all have multi-monitor setups then, I find 1080p/1200p single monitor seriously limiting productivity-wise)

Downloaded and installed the game on Steam, playing right now. Is there any point in creating a Triumph account if you don't intend to play multiplayer? Right now I'm playing the game offline as a guest.

The game recommends playing as the Elven Council for first timers, which I am, and I'm pretty shocked with the amount of lore they have as a preamble to the actual game. I kind of expected it to be like Civ. just pick your leader/faction/race and go.

I think creating a Triumph account and linking it to your Steam account will be necessary for DLC later on, although I'm not sure. That and multiplayer, I suppose, from what I gather.

Ergh. The game doesn't like resolutions higher than 1080p. You get black boxes and blurred text. >.>

I've been bugging the developers for screenshots higher than 1080p for a few weeks but I haven't seen anything. Maybe this is why.

JOKING. They were probably honest about not having higher resolution screens but it doesn't make me feel very good about the UI scaling situation. I'd really appreciate a gameplay screenshot once 2560x1600 is working properly.

Yep, if the units are adjacent they can join the battle, but will need a few turns to get into the action.

Unless, they change it in the patch, it doesn't seem to have proper UI scaling, no.

Edit: This was what I took earlier, showing the graphical glitches, but you can still see the scale of the UI. It isn't brilliant, but scaling doesn't bother me quite as much, I can manage. http://cloud-2.steampowered.com/ugc/432651023255444227/44ECE63526CCBEE2ECB4D42A4C9318A87527DCF4/
