AHA! I finally got my "Official" Gamecube Component cable

BlueTsunami said:
Yes. Who actually has one? I heard that the newer Gamecube models discontinued the Digital Out feature.
This is true. I was EXTREMELY pissed off when I picked one up a few weeks back.

In my case, being late to the GC party I ended up buying a pre-owned one so that I could have the digital out. At $35 the component cable cost more then 1/2 the price of the entire console! :lol
I'll still get it eventually, but was wondering about the "Press B for progressive" screen.... Does it default to 480i if you don't press anything after a couple of seconds? Also, is this consistant for all 480P potential games? My projector only support 480P and above on the component input. 480i won't work.

If anybody wants me to get them the official cables from the Nintendo Service Center, just send me a PM. It'll come to about $35 or so.

Do you know if I would be able to swap my digital out-less GC for one that works with the component cables in Redmond, eliminating the need to mail in my system for a replacement?

Well, Gamecube in general doesn't have any games that are above progressive scan (720p 1080i). So if you get a game, it will either have 480p or not. The pressing B thing is just to activate the menu that asks you if you want progressive scan. You have to press and hold B when you turn on the Gamecube to get the prompt.

I bought mine for $45-ish off of eBay. Granted, it's the most I've ever paid for a cable, but there's a neat sort of dorky pride in finally having one and, obviously, the games that support it look much better, short of RE4. It looks like shit in progressive scan on the GC, unfortunately. Following the advice I got awhile back in my own GC component cable thread ( :D ) I picked up F-Zero GX from Gamestop for like $10 and it is GORGEOUS. If you own the cable I can't stress enough how much you need to pick up that game. Metroid Prime also looks wonderful and when I stretch it to widescreen, it still looks quite nice. Even though I believe the game is still running in 4:3, there's something about it that lends well to the slight 16:9 stretch. If you're serious about getting the most from your GC games and own an HD set, I'd try to hunt this cable down. If you don't own an HD set, the price isn't going to be worth the very slight quality bump in going from s-video 480i to component 480i.

Can you just keep hitting the B button until it switches into progressive or do you have to move up or down selection wise to pick it. Like I mentioned, if I were to use the component cable I would effectively be blind from the time the GC boots up until the Progressive kicks in. I guess what I'm asking is if it is possible to enable progressively w/o seeing the menu. Thanks.

Well, its good to refer to the instruction manual of the game itself. My experience with the two games I've used is

1)Turn on Gamecube
2)Press B button (hold it)
3)Keep holding B button until you see message (after Nintendo Logo) saying if you want Progressive Scan
4)At this point you can let go of the B button and select Progressive Scan

Once thats done...the screen will go black then switch over to pro-scan.

I feel so damn stupid right now.

I bought an HDTV and component cables for PS2 a little over a month ago. I had no idea you had to hold down triangle and x to enable 480P. For some reason I thought it was automatic (I obviously don't know much about this sort of thing). I have never seen a game in 480P before and it was a new TV so I didn't know any better. It already looked a lot better than my old TV without holding down any buttons.

As soon as I get home I'm going to try this out.

Hopefully I can use my Gamecube component cable with the REV right?

Nintendo likes to make hardware backwards compatible, AFAK you can use a SNES cable on the GC if you wanted to.

Yep, you can use SNES and N64 cables...

I don't want to buy another component cable for the Rev, I paid $60 for the ones I've so I'm hoping for cable compatibility...

iirc thats d-terminal, not dvi. i think its like vga or rgb but with a different pin arrangement. no one has made a pure dvi cable afaik, not sure if anyone has figured out if its possible to get a dvi signal out of the digital out either.

nintendos store seems to show the component cables on perpetual back order, but for people that have ordered, they seem to get them within a week or so (completely anecdotal off a bunch cases ive seen though).

Does your TV have an info screen or status bar or something similar? That would probably be the easiest way to verify what signal it is receiving.

BlueTsunami, #4 is the part I've got a question about. By select do you have to move up or down then hit a button to confirm or just hit a different button? I'll check the manuals when I get home, but I don't think they will be very specific on this point.

Well, its been consistent for me but all I had to do was let go of the B button and just use the D Pad (Left or Right) to select Yes or No to Progressive Scan.

I was wondering about this topic the other day. Should I go ahead and pick up a component cable now, or just wait 9 months, and get one with the Revolution? I'm assuming that the Revolution will still support progressive scan 480p with the Gamecube games which have that capability - although maybe that is an erroneous assumption on my part. Plus, the Revolution will probably require its own special cable anyway (much like the Gamecube), so I'm wondering if it may not be better at this point to just wait for the Rev and then start playing my Cube games in 480p on the Revolution.

Anyone have any ideas about this?
