What's the best way to get rid of ads when running aim? All of a sudden, commercials for acuvue start popping up. I had my speakers on and it was disruptive.

You could also get an alternative such as Trillian, DeadAIM and whatnot.

I use AIM 4.8 and AIM+

I disable Active X, although that probably isn't the answer you're looking for.

Get a firewall and block all AIM traffic through remote port 80. It's a clean fix and there are zero downsides. It doesn't affect your connection to the service at all.

GAIM sucks, all the fonts are at least one point size small... some people I can't even talk to with that software because I can't fucking read anything.

AIM on trillian doesnt work for me. Not sure why, it did a while ago, then suddenly stopped no matter what version of Trillian I have.

AIM Ad Hack. it downloads the latest version of AIM for you and cleans up the installation to remove ads from the buddy window and the extra annoying bits of software (browser, toolbars, links) that AOL throws in for fun. works great and i haven't had an issue with it yet.

GAIM does suck, but it's bare bones and easy to use, making it leagues better than AIM's aging, overbloated, ad-infested software. Trillian has a miserable UI, but if you skin it right and spend some time getting that fixed up, it's decent. All PC & Mac chat clients in my experience pale in comparison to Adium (Mac only) however; barring adding in video conferencing, that thing's golden.

Yes, Aim Ad Hack is good. I'd rather that than another bloated program with hundreds of features I'll never use. If you're gonna use this though, download AIM 5.2.3292 (widely regarded as the best AIM ever) from oldversion.com.
