Remakes generally go one of two ways...they either take a beloved game and reimagine it for a modern audience while keeping the spirit and vibe of the original fully intact and improve on what came before...or they totally betray the source material and dump out something that just feels like a lazy cash grab. There is rarely an option in between.
That's why the twin remakes of the original Castlevania, Akumajo Dracula on the Sharp X68000 and Castlevania Chronicles on PS1 are so amazing; they manage to take everything about the NES original that kicked off the franchise and just make it better! You know...like remakes sound
Better graphics, bigger levels, AMAZING music (especially MIDI on the X68000) that remakes the same tracks but with period modern hardware. Really it feels like what the designers of Castlevania WOULD HAVE MADE had they had better specs during initial development. I wont say this version negates the need to play the NES original...but it certainly surpasses it in almost every way imaginable. It certainly falls into the GOOD remake category thats for sure!
But that got me thinking GAF...what are the BEST and WORST remakes. I do love hearing everyones opinions
Now lets hope ONE DAY Konami gets back on track and stops just piping new Castlevania content into their pachislot operation. Because damn it we deserve MORE Castlevania without having to go to Japanese pachinko parlors!
