Alan Wake 2: Lack Of Sales Update Suggests It Didn’t Sell Too Well

I always want games to do well and I love Remedy.

But Alan Wake 2 has to rank as one of the most overrated games of all time. Slow, pretentious and boring.

Do we know sales numbers of each game all the time?
Surprise successes often announce it themselves quite early, since it is somewhat a sheep proof of quality if people flock to it, but "disappointing sales" messages usually only arrive after a year or so unless it's a total failure with the studio closing as well? Maybe I would need to stalk the respective X accounts but I am not aware that every damn game publishes their number all the time. Most games will be in the enough to survive and continue category anyway. Not terrible not actually good either, and Remedy seem to do pretty much AAA on a kinda fast time and thus AA budget. So possibly need not the same numbers as other big studios. Similar as maybe Asobo.

good games comes out and nobody buys it destroying gaming

It's an amazing game, I'm 35 + hours in, and I'm enjoying it a lot. I think releasing it during the time other big ip released like spider man 2, and Mario wonder, def affected its sales.

It was to be expected. What was not is that Remedy didn't see this and use the chance to complete the damn story. Even worse so, the story DIDN'T make any real progress in part 2.

I mean, did they think they'd get another shot at this?

You mean all those black female gamers represented by the main char didnt go and support the product they were catered to ???????
Are you 12 years old? So sick of people crying about this stuff. I hope your next boss is a black woman and she uses her power to make your job unpleasant.

pretty sure the ones bashing the epic store and reluctant to spend any money there, log on every week or every day at the end of the year to grab the free games. am i wrong?

So like the first one.

I loved Max Payne. But Wake put me to sleep.

No, but then how many of those games actually get played? Preferring all your games in a single library isn't wrong. The Epic app is completely lacking in features compared to Steam. Put the game on Steam day one as well and look at the sales, you are leaving millions of sales on the table. I'm sure the lack of a physical edition on console isn't also limiting sales, especially since Alan Wake wasn't purchasable for years due to ownership issues.

That said ~$24 for the game along with a copy of Alan Wake Remastered, and then $2 in Epic credit seems like a loss leader for Epic. If it was on Steam, it would still be selling well at full price.

I'll pick it up eventually. Hopefully it does as well as Control for them. As a rule they don't release huge hits, or at least haven't so far, outside of maybe Max Payne.

No need to hate on the game because it doesn't do CoD numbers though.

Problem to buy on epic store is: we don't know if this crap store will be around in 5-10 years.

This is wrong thinking. Why would you think they don't care about sales when they get more money for more copies being sold?
Because when they do these exclusivity partnership deals they already got frontend money to cover costs etc... Thats why they dont care when a game launches on one console platform, or one PC e-store, or not even caring about a disc copy. And they keep doing these kinds of limitation deals for every game they release. Will they get more money the more copies sold? Ya, I guess so. Do they really care? Not really. If they really cared about maximizig copies sold, they release their games disc and digital across PS/Xbox/PC with no weird exclusivity deals.

if they don't get played one more reason to not have he hassle of logging in epic store to pick them. just wait for the will of playing them to come and then spend it so well spent on steam. let's not be hypocrites

I want the market to go in the direction of demanding the kind of games I like so I get more of them. I wouldn't say I'm exactly happy, but it's an indicator that aligns with what I enjoy.
What is it about Alan Wake II not doing well that aligns with what you enjoy? I'm all ears. What kind of games do you enjoy that Alan Wake II is an existential threat to?

It's both. There are lots of folks who didn't buy it in this thread alone due to no physical, me included.
In this thread, yes. But on the whole? I love to buy physical but most people don't. NeoGAF is not representative of the majority of those who play games.

It was a niche game. Everyone was surprised they were able to make a sequel happen. Given the rave reviews it will have a long tail and people will be talking about it for a long time. Eventuallly I'm sure it will be profitable for them if it's not already.

People don't even have to make an effort to boycott these games anymore, gamers recognize them for what they are and immediately avoid them. The world is healing

The first Alan Wake was and still is a masterpiece and there should not have been a sequel. Instead, the studio should have did something more enticing, something fresh in which the public has far more interest. For example, something set in a small town in New Mexico called Roswell, in 1947. Or the Mothman incident in Point Pleasant on November 15, 1966. Or maybe something about the The Voynich Manuscript in which leads the player to another world inside the Earth.

I wouldn't say Alan Woke, but I excepted that after so many years waiting for a sequel , many players wanted this game to be fully focused in, you know, Alan Wake, the guy who gives name to the game.

For a female protagonist focused franchise, there's already Control, also based in the same universe.

You have that completely backwards. Most people still buy physical, especially outside the US market. Even in the US market, physical is still a significant portion of sales.

This is Remedy, not Frogwares

I really enjoyed it, it's a shame we probably won't get a 3rd game now.

It always feels like Remedy is teetering on the edge but they always manage to soldier on. The Alan Wake series has always been injected with funding that has disappointed a portion of the PC Gaming community.

Next one will be steam only and funded by gaben himself. After that he'll discover the number 3 and release Half Life 3 and Left 4 dead 3. The prophecy is written.

I'm actually a little surprised that no one has purchased Remedy with all the Ludacris investment money that has been thrown around the last few years.

They make sense for both MS and Sony, hell even Take Two could have attempted it

Right. Their current style feels like like a glove with Sony's portfolio, previous relationships with Microsoft and Take 2 like you said. If I had to venture a guess, I'd say they've turned down offers.

oh wowwwwwww thats crazy, so having less options to buy, resulted in less sales? WILD! Who the fuck would skip this game cause that? /s

me.

I'm also sure lots of fucking people like me skipped it and merely played something else. Blame yourself lol

I was literally willing to even buy a steelbook edition of the title, but shit, if you don't want money, thats on you lol

Is Alan Wake even in the game? It kind of looked like they replaced him with a black woman. You know, pulling a Disney. Or if he is in the game, they kill him off in the first act like another game everybody loves.

Even if he is in the game, I only thought the first game was ok and I think I got it for free or deeply discounted. I would only play it once it comes to Steam and is on sale or is free on Epic. So it will be a while if ever.
