Alan Wake 2: Lack Of Sales Update Suggests It Didn’t Sell Too Well

I didn't like Alan Wake 1, dropped Quantum Break and thought Control was nothing to write home about. I haven't really liked any of Remedy's post-Max Payne games, so I didn't even bother with Alan Wake 2. I don't care how much the critics praise it, I'm not going to bother trying it until it hits Gamepass or whatever.
 
That's a bummer, it's one of my favorite 2023 releases. I hope they know what they are doing with this Epic exclusivity thing. Hopefully it'll sell as well or even more than Control after they release it outside EGS.

Even if he is in the game, I only thought the first game was ok and I think I got it for free or deeply discounted. I would only play it once it comes to Steam and is on sale or is free on Epic. So it will be a while if ever.

If anyone wants to buy it for me on Epic, I will no longer say I'm waiting for Steam to pick it up. I really like the series, so much so that I bought the first one twice on the 360 after relase simply because I liked the collectors edition.

I really don't even have a problem with Epic, I've bought quite a few games on it. It's just at times like this, I still have BG3 to finish, Alien: Dark Descent, Cyberpunk DLC, RE4make... I just have so much, and then I'd like to check out Ready or Not's latest update.... I just have too much to play that the annoyance of fracturing my library even more in the eventual time I might get to check out Alan Wake 2...Well, by then, it'll probably have gone on a significant sale, so there's just no reason to buy it now.

It's such a stacked holiday season right now that you have to have all possible avenues going for people to consider you over other choices, and other than fans like me that probably like the original more than most, it's an uphill battle. But if the alternative is the game not being made at all, I'm very glad that Remedy has gone down the path they chose and really do look forward to checking it out. Eventually.

I've loved nearly every Remedy game since Max Payne....

But let's all collectively continue to forget the game they released before Control. That one sucked.

Not releasing on Steam was a huge sales mistake although it was understandable given that Epic bankrolled and published the game. They weren't going to pass on the opportunity to make it exclusive to lure people to EGS. People holding out for an eventual Steam release might be waiting forever.

I'm still bitter about no physical release but I doubt that would have contributed so much to sales figures that it could turn a failure into a success.

The original Alan Wake was also a sales flop at first but reached about 4.5 million eventually with the PC port, substantial bundling and holiday sales. I just don't think the series has nearly as much appeal as people think. The remaster didn't meet sales targets either, supposedly.

This on half price on Epic with a 33% coupon as well bringing it down to about $25 AUD ($16 USD) ... do I pull the trigger? Or RDR2 for $14 AUD ($9 USD) ... help me GAF

3D graphics aren't much newer than FMV so I guess you aren't playing many games nowadays. Waiting for that 4D revolution of which you can only play a single game before it's all the same tripe I guess.

Live action and FMV are the exact same thing. Both use real people, not sure why this is a difficult concept to grasp.

Hey enjoy what you want....i see live action/FMV in a game and it immediately screams to me as low class and no originality

I think one of my biggest complaints is that it all feel so mundane and they pretty much ignore stuff from the first game and American Nightmare. Sam Lake even admitted he forgot a lot of stuff about the first two games and uses Wikipedia to try to keep everything consistent.

A good example for me is how they mention alien intelligences and lovecraftian beings that supposedly dwell in the Dark Place in the first two games. There's no weird creatures or no appearances by any kind of lovecraftian type being and instead it's just a bunch of shadows. I guess you could count the Dark Presence that only shows up a couple times as one of these beings but all it shows up as is a warp in the air.

They had a chance to really do something interesting with the game and instead pretty much ignore the really interesting parts of the first two games.

Not sure what you think my point was but with or without the edit it's exactly the same. I meant real-time 3D graphics obviously, as I'm sure you're playing games using this tired old feature that is in fact about as old as FMV if not older but Alan Wake 2 is where you draw the line, lol.

When talking about FMV games people usually mean games that had little to no gameplay and were comprised almost excusively from just video. Comparing that to something like Alan Wake is silly to say the least, it has as much in common with those games as any other game that breaks up gameplay with cutscenes. Whether the cutscenes are static images, or polygons or actual video is irrelevant, still has nothing to do with the fmv genre.

I didn't mention game types anywhere, nor is Alan Wake 2 a different game type than something like RE because it happens to have some live action scenes which you literally also said is just the same thing as a FMV (for all the wrong reasons as no, FMV doesn't have to use real people and every live action is a FMV but not every FMV is a live action). GTAVI having some live action cut scene tucked away somewhere (or more prominent) wouldn't suddenly beome a different game type. Loathing seeing real people is a whole different deal to what you initially implied about originality.

Must have hated all MGS games I guess.

Didn't seem like a good gameplay type game. Control didn't have exceptionally well done story telling…very stop and go with all the outdated log based story telling.

Between those two factors, you can't really convince me this game is worth a shot at more than $30 bucks or if I think I'm in the mood.

I'm thinking here in the US….. I can't think of one person that buys physical anymore and I mean it's been years.
I have yet to stick a disc into my PS5 or XSX
Now that I think about it actually, both my brothers will buy physical only on the Switch and that's all to do with space.

I would love to see a comprehensive list by country physical vs digital.

At least FF16 is playable and fun, it's not my GOTY but it's also not insufferable to play like AW2 is. Jank ass shooting and movement.

Not a good game imo.

It hides it's many flaws under the pretense of "artistic flare", but at it's core it's a game with an identity crisis; Should have been an adventure game ala Heavy Rain.

If it's a storyline-game with limited gamplay and a lot of walking and seeing, you might as well just turn it into one, instead of giving us just a taste of a few different genres, all wrapped up in a lot of walking and a dubious storyline at best.

It's not 4% of games sold, it's 4% of revenue. Digital games is 21% of revenue. So physical games are actually 20% of all games sold. It's likely a bit higher as Sony looses some revenue on physical games due to vendor overhead and second hand sales. Probably around a quarter to a third of all games sold are physical. Not quite as bad, but it is still a shrinking market.
