Damn. I'm reading some poetry online (one of the best things as far as education and the net... great writings are at your fingertips). Just got done reading Alexander Pope's Eloisa to Abelard and this poem is fucking amazing. Not much poetry can really impress me, and I never really gave a damn about poetry outside of Poe. But this shit is phenomenal.

How happy is the blameless vestal's lot!
The world forgetting, by the world forgot.
Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind!
Each pray'r accepted, and each wish resign'd;

Awesome part about basically how the innocent should have no worries, and how nice it must be to be so innocent (ignorant).

I ought to grieve, but cannot what I ought;
I mourn the lover, not lament the fault;
I view my crime, but kindle at the view,
Repent old pleasures, and solicit new;
Now turn'd to Heav'n, I weep my past offence,
Now think of thee, and curse my innocence.
Of all affliction taught a lover yet,
'Tis sure the hardest science to forget!
How shall I lose the sin, yet keep the sense,
And love th' offender, yet detest th' offence?

what's some other badass poetry that I should read?

Rap is the new poetry.

Yeah. I'm with ronito here... rap CAN be poetic, but there's no way that you'll tell me that Lil Jon is even in the same category as Pope or any other poet ever to live. And I fucking LOVE rap, but while a few comparisons may exist between poetry and rap, they are NOT interchangeable.

Movies can be poetic. Rock can be poetic. Even videogames can be poetic (and for those who disagree, play MGS3). But just because these all utilize poetry and share characteristics of it, doesn't mean that they are poetry de facto.

Seamus Heaney, yes.

Here's a motley crew that I like:

Arthur Rimbaud
John Keats
Andrew Marvell ("To His Coy Mistress")
John Donne
Robert Frost
Paul Muldoon
W. B. Yeats
Williams Carlos Williams
Pablo Neruda
E. E. Cummings
Li-Young Li

My favourite has always been e. e. cummings. He's not for everyone, though. When I was younger, I used to spend hours dissecting his poems, which to a lot of people are just confusing jumbles with no form or syntax. But when you really look at them, there's always a really interesting meaning to each one. Here's an online collection of his poems with discussions. :)

But Alexander the movie sucked ass-shit! Saw it for the first time tonight, and it would've been the first DVD I stopped watching midway through.

But I held out.

Pity me.

Capitalize your E's >:(

Since English is my second language, I really tend to gravitate towards poems that use simple diction. (Millay, [translations of..] Neruda)
