Not a fan of Nightcrawler or Gyllenhaal especially. He gave a good performance, but worthy of an Oscar nom? Not in my book. Then again, my book is pretty different from what the Academy decides, so it's not like that means anything.

Marion Cotillard was nominated for an Oscar?

Well, at least the Academy is no longer even bothering to pretend to give a shit about this being anything more than a contest between agents and PR.
Lmao so out of touch. Not only has she already WON an oscar and continually been a great actress that you're likely judging from a gif from a blockbuster, the idea that a goddamn dardennes movie is running some pr sleaze game is hilarious.

And I can't even imagine how someone would think this is a big Hollywood push, since the movie she's been nominated for is a French film that's being distributed by IFC Films. Real Hollywood there!

She won an Oscar for a French film. The only time French-language role was given the award. And she was absolutely stunning in it, it's insane just how good she was in La Vie en Rose.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 was nominated after it won the Golden Globe. Its happening!

I've seen Dragon 2, Big Hero 6 and Kaguya, so that's not going to happen.
From these three Kaguya is a clear winner. Haven't seen the others so can't tell if they have a chance or not.

Gyllenhaal-Nightcrawler snubbed so haaard in favor of Mediocre actors suchs as Redmayne and Bradley Cooper..

Well as long as Keaton wins ,but still...Unbelievable.

Also, no nomination for Birdman's editing ? that's just baffling to me.

I'll assume you haven't seen La Vie en Rose. She's a terrific actress. Even if we just judge her Nolan work, she was wonderfully creepy in Inception.

How was Godzilla not nominated for sound design? Whatever people actually thought of the movie, it at least excelled in that category.

Nolan has too much street cred. Honestly, I'd easily put Godzilla above Interstellar in a lot of technical categories, including cinematography.

There isn't much editing, the entire movie is one long shot lol

The best actress category is the weakest in years.

As a French guy i'll never understand why American critics love Marion Cotillard so much. Most people in France do not understand the critical success she enjoys in the US. Her performance in Batman ruined the remains of prestige she had left. She's considered a good actress but that's about it. We have many many more talented actresses in France. I guess she got lucky at the right time when she won an Oscar a few years ago.

I liked her performance in " De Rouille et d'os " and in " Deux jours, une nuit " but i found it was nothing transcendent nor oscar-worthy. But again, Hollywood seems to have a crush on her,

But still .. for her to get a nomination for a foreign movie that went completely unnoticed in the US ... It came as a shock to me.

I have seen people claim Birdman deserves an editing award though, which is hilarious. The editing in Birdman just stitches the gimmick together, heavily aided by camera choreography that moves up against walls or mechanically through spaces so digital stitching is easier. "Good" editing controls pacing, allows for clarity, creates meaning through juxtaposition, refines perspective. The editing in Birdman isn't about any of that. It's duct tape for a stunt.

Despite my post above, I largely agree with you.
Birdman's noteworthy snub for me was Original Score due to what is nothing more than a technicality.

So The Lego Movie, the movie that got the highest aggregated score for an animated movie among critics in 2014, wasn't even nominated for best animated picture?

Ah well, when it comes to animated movies, the Oscars are a joke and some random person on GAF is literally more trustworthy with their opinions. The people at the Oscars barely even watch the animated movies they nominate, let alone take them seriously. What a shame.
At least there's one award organization with actual credibility when it comes to recognizing animated features.
The Annie Awards will be handed out on Saturday, January 31st.

Best Animated Feature

Big Hero 6 -
Walt Disney Animation Studios
Cheatin' - Plymptoons Studio
How to Train Your Dragon 2 - DreamWorks Animation SKG
Song of the Sea - GKIDS/Cartoon Saloon
The Book of Life - Reel FX Animation Studios/Twentieth Century Fox
The Boxtrolls - Focus Features/Laika
The LEGO Movie -Warner Bros. Pictures
The Tale of The Princess Kaguya - GKIDS/Studio Ghibli
At this point the Academy should just throw in the towel on the category, admit that they're clueless and let the Annie awards garner top billing.

I dunno, man... the Annies still have a huge American slant, and I stopped believing in them after the whole Kung Fu Panda debacle.

Just saw bird man this afternoon at the theater. Fucking great movie. I hope Keaton, Norton and Stone win it on Oscar night.

Uh, no offense, but Marion Cotillard is probably the best actress to have emerged from the past ten years (sorry Jessica Chastain). There is a reason that her performance and win in La Vie En Rose is so acclaimed and frequently cited as one of the greatest performances of our time.

Well evidently, you and the Academy go off the same book!

Bradley Cooper over Ralph Fiennes in Grand Budapest or David Oyelowo in Selma or Oscar Isaac in A Most Violent Year or Gyllenhaal in Nightcrawler? I don't even.

Also, I'm happy that 'Ida' scored an nomination for cinematography. What a beautiful film.

I wish Netflix had the other foreign language noms. :/

I don't really have an investment in anything this year, since I didn't get to see a lot of movies in 2014, so I'm watching purely for the spectacle. :)

Yeah no.

Whatever editing the movie had was critical for the seamless structure and unparalleled immersion Birdman was able to achieve.

So mad about the Ava DuVernay snub that I think I'm boycotting this year. Maybe I'll spend those 4 hours on something a little more exciting, like watching traffic

Her performance in 2 Days 1 Night is amazing.

Just got done seeing American Sniper. I actually side with the Academy giving it some love (including the big one). As for Cooper's nod, well that category was already a bloodbath to begin with so whatever (I thought he was pretty good)

My Best Picture nod ranking

Birdman
Boyhood
Whiplash
Selma
Imitation Game
American Sniper
Theory of Everything
Grand Budapest Hotel

I don't really see GBH as the worst of bunch, but it's been forever since I've seen it and I really don't feel like seeing it again so it's like whatever

It's quite a feat that TGBH came out early last year and managed to not lose too much steam in awards talk/hype throughout the year.

First Boyhood, now Birdman joins the 2014 Gimmick Film List!

The editing is critical in preserving the illusion. I said exactly that. but the editing of the film didn't involve choosing how to order or pace scenes. how much of a take to use. what meaning to create by ordering shots in a certain way or selecting transitions. Preserving the one-take look necessarily requires the editing to be unobtrusive and lifeless

did you mean to quote a different post of mine? Cause that one's not about Birdman at all

Anyway I don't think it's wrong to say Boyhood or Birdman revolve around gimmicks-- doesn't have to be pejorative. Both have big structural conceit that have been used to draw people in. Big difference for me was that Birdman's was a minor contribution. Some much appreciated antsiness, but it was not up to the task of making Innaritu's humorlessness and vacuousness any better. Whereas Boyhood's conceit was essential to capturing the sensation of time moving forward mundanely, slowly shaping a person.

Haha whoops, I guess I just scrolled through the whole page, remembered your icon, and didn't realize you had more than one post on this page.

Anyway, I think the term "gimmick" cannot escape the negative connotations that have been attributed to it. If you use it, people are automatically going to assume you're meaning it in the negative sense.

Wait when did Gone Girl fizzle out? That was getting buzz a couple of months ago and damnit it's a good film. No one's even talking about it here. Surely we could have expected at least a few technical noms - score, cinematography, editing. Is it just Best Actress it's been nominated for? Jeez that ain't no fun.

Lol yep definitely spoken like someone whose experience with Cotillard is confined to that single GIF from TDKR.
