If Song of the Sea (haven't seen yet but plant to soon), or Kaguya won in the animated category I'd be overjoyed. We all know it's going to Big Hero 6, though : (

Edit: Just to be clear, BH6 is a good film, I'm just so sick of pixar sweeping the Oscars every year. Other countries exist, dammit!

But BH6 isn't a Pixar film. And why would you be overjoyed at a film you haven't seen winning?

Eh i dont think interstellar deserved a direction nom but if shit like imitation game makes the cut, then i dont know who the fuck is nominating in the direction category. Id might as well throw nolan in the mix, better than the pedantic shit morten Whatever did.

For the record though, id nominate damien chazelle and fincher over nolan for direction for this year, who did fucking fantastic work over whiplash and gone girl, respectively.

As would I.

Gone Girl got shafted so hard. Not even editing and adapted screenplay? Should have been those plus best picture, director, original score and cinematography imo.

No bp for Gone Girl is the biggest snub to me.

Yup these too

Bradley Cooper was nominated for the wrong gun-nut.

LEGO Movie not getting nominated while Big Hero 6 does?

Disney got pull.

Seriously, Big Hero 6 didn't have a good screenplay at all. It was a typical hero's journey, like a beat-for-beat carbon copy of the book "Save the Cat" also known as, "how to write a 3-act story." There were nothing new, nothing "smart." It had charming visuals, but its limp story and its terribly simplified supporting cast dragged it down. Even its stereoscopic 3d was flat and uninspired!

Lego Movie had it all - story structure was neat, thematically sound, its humour spans across all ages, and the technology and effort behind the animation itself was pushing boundaries!

Wait, no David Oyelowo? What?

As for no Lego Movie, it obviously deserved it, but the Academy's been shit when it comes to animated for a while.

Best animated feature film of the year

“Big Hero 6” Don Hall, Chris Williams and Roy Conli
“The Boxtrolls” Anthony Stacchi, Graham Annable and Travis Knight
“How to Train Your Dragon 2” Dean DeBlois and Bonnie Arnold
“Song of the Sea” Tomm Moore and Paul Young
“The Tale of the Princess Kaguya” Isao Takahata and Yoshiaki Nishimura
All of these got nominated while LEGO didn't.

if Lego Movie got a spot, which nomination would it replace though? Out of those I've only seen HTTYD2 (which I've found rather lacking) so far. Everyone seemingly loves Kaguya, basically no one here has seen Song of the Sea, Big Hero 6 seems to be a pretty fun movie and I think opinions are divided on Boxtrolls ( I still love you, Laika)

I haven't even seen Lego movie but it could replace HTTD2 or BH6 pretty easily. Both were very lackluster.

How the hell is Interstellar nominated for best sound mixing and editing??

You could hardly hear what people were saying at pivotal moments of the film!

Apart from that though, I'm happy with that list overall, hell I think it's one of the better ones in some time tbh.

Easily Box Trolls. Maybe How To Train Your Dragon 2. Of course not Big Hero 6 regardless of the movie's quality, because the academy loves Disney.

No Interstellar for Best Picture?

Interstellar was completely fine for what it was, but it isn't even close to best picture material.

Just because Nolan spoon feeds every ounce of symbolism and theme into his audiences mouths doesn't mean other films don't do it better with ten times the nuance and subtlety.

Had a feeling that Jake would get snubbed. Best Actor is ridiculously stacked this year. Ralph Fiennes gave a great performance too. If only Carrell was pushed in the Supporting Actor category.....

At least Nightcrawler got a screenplay nom. No love for Gone Girl at all :(

Now I think about it, it's kind of weird that Whiplash isn't nominated for best soundtrack. Justin Hurwitz got snubbed. Together with Interstellar and the Grand Budapest my favourite soundtracks.

Wow can't believe Lego Movie got screwed. Quite surprising, and really sucks. I still need to see The Tale of The Princess Kaguya (and probably should get around seeing Song of the Sea), and I hope it gets a wider release.:/

Weird I thought it was. Dunno why, guess not. And because The Secret of Kells was a fantastic movie, and the song of the sea looks just as good. Plus, I'd love to see a foreign film win, and a 2d film win, instead of the continuation of the 3-d CGI disney film trend we've seen so far. Ernest & Celestine got robbed last year as well :/

Pixar has won it 7 times now. But if you ask me Finding Nemo, Wall-E, Up, Ratatouille and Toy Story 3 completely deserved their awards. Brave and The Incredibles maybe less. Though I don't know what other movies they were up against from the top of my mind.

Hope the Theory of Everything wins best score here too. It really is an incredible score. Interstellar is great too, but Theory is borderline perfect on multiple levels.

Lol at no Birdman for editing and the sound mixing nom for Interstellar. Some straight crack smokin going on.

The whole Birdman score thing is horseshit as well. Wasn't a giant fan of the movie, but I enjoyed the score and it really is major.

Lego Movie was definitely better than Big Hero 6.

And I'm not even as fond of Lego Movie as a lot of people here.

I'm baffled at Lego not being there, it's an order of magnitude better than something like HTTYD2.

Then again, it's well known that Oscar voters don't know much about animated movies and just vote on big names.

They couldn't have at least put a few more Best Picture candidates in? If anything I don't think Foxcatcher deserves it, I'd rather Gone Girl or something else.

Thoughts:

Surprised the Lego Movie got snubbed.
Disappointed Yellow Flick Beat didn't get a Song nod.
Disappointed, but not surprised, Jake G didn't get a nod for Nightcrawler.
Surprised Gone Girl got completely snubbed, especially original score.
Hope JK Simmons takes home the oscar.

Very pleased that HTTYD was nominated.

Surprised that they passed on the Lego Movie, though I find it overrated.

I tried to watch Lego Movie but was put off. Still it seemed to resonate with people more than HTTYD2, which felt like a direct to video sequel at times. Perhaps because I watched it on a plane and didn't give the visuals a chance to wow me, but I don't remember once being surprised by that film. I am curious what you liked about it.

Though I still have to see most of the other nominees in that category -- I only saw Kaguya.

lol these are pretty good

Yeah pretty funny stuff.

Interstellar didn't get best cinematography nomination? Wat. Even the people who didn't really like the movie mention the photography as one of the best things.

lol what? No.

Outside one or two VFX scenes, Interstellar's cinematography was hardly anything special. Which is a shame since Hoytema's past work is insanely good.

It jumped out to me right away because it's very moody and Twin Peaks-ish.

So good.

I thought that the soundtrack was very subdued and brilliant, in that background not in-your-face way. Really fits the tone incredibly well but nothing as instantly memorable as, say, In Motion.

Then I youtubed it and when the second track (Sugar Storm) started I immediately recognized it, even though I didn't listen to the ost since the day I watched the film, several months ago. Brilliant stuff and I'd agree it beats Social Network soundtrack, which was already amazing effort.

While no nomination for BP, Director, or Adapted Screenplay is surprising, no nom for Original Score is baffling.

Cinematography in the cornfield sequences was fairly good, also some of the long shots on the water planet as well.
