Alien: Covenant |SPOILER THREAD| With more Christian subtext than BvS

I did not like Alien: Covenant. I've never seen so many dump people ever in a movie before. So, so many dump decisions that got all of them killed which is contribute to the awful writing throughout. Also, it was more disturbing than actually being scary. The movie never felt like there was ever hope. No matter what they did they were all going to die. Not so much for Prometheus.

I liked and enjoyed Prometheus and Noomi Rapace, Fassbender and Idris Elba were the highlights of that movie for me. It also had it's issues, but this movie made Prometheus look like a masterpiece. It's funny when you realize that the story in Alien: Covenant is almost the same as Prometheus.

- *Go to unidentified planet*, "it might be a bad idea, but lets do it anyway."
- *Bad shit happens*, "we have to get off planet now."

Also, to Elizabeth Shaw...

I knew she shouldn't have trusted David. It's also funny when you realize that she got everyone in Covenant killed because she failed to get rid of David once she got help from him to get off that planet.

Coming to think of it, the whole lore of Prometheus was flawed and stupid right from the start:
This is a movie that deals with evolution. The Engineers created life on Earth millions of years ago, but they haven't evolved one bit since then? Ok, did I miss something?

Scott basically fucked the Alien mystery and the mystery behind the space jockey.
Excuse me, but an Android that is supposed to be created in 40 years is able to outsmart a galactic civilization which has been around for millions of years is bad Sci-Fi if you ask me.
(I'm still waiting for hover boards from Mattel)

Just saw this for the second time in Dolby Cinema (my first viewing was in LieMAX). Neat format. I enjoyed the movie just as much, or maybe a slight bit more, on the repeat viewing. I now have imagery in my head of a hypothetical hellscape that David could turn the Covenant into. On some Dead Space Ishimura shit.

It has me fucked up that Shaw now lives on as all the Xenos. I think I kinda checked out for a while after the reveal during (and after) my first viewing.

Still pretty frustrated to not see any Awakening clarification. I guess now we just wait until Fox announces some shit after the money's come in.

Anyone getting the artbook that drops next week, or any other behind the scenes material? I need the prequel book that comes out later this year.

What the hell are you talking about? The engineers are advanced as fuck. That's why they have space ships that can take them anywhere in the universe and can seed and destroy life at will. The engineers in Covenant obviously chose to live a monk-like existence. It may be why they didn't like us too much.

Also, I don't think David outsmarted them. I think he learned from them. He even says he spent 10 years learning their ways. And what was up with all the scrolls? Even it was all David though, that would still make sense. We created a super-smart, constantly learning AI and who knows the boundaries it could push? Just because you didn't like something doesn't mean it doesn't make sense.

Why? If anything, AI being able to outpace organic beings at exponential speeds is not a uncommon thing in sci-fi

Remove any and all needs for morality and ethics + intelligent AI, and usually the AI succeeds in fiction

Guys, I get what you're saying, but think of it this way:
We are basically the Enigeers' offspring.
We have evolved in thousands of years to create an artificial lifeform in the future that seems to be the smartest thing in the universe of this movie universe.
The Engineers in Prometheus have been around for millions of years and they stayed with the same "religious" tradition and culture the whole time without trying to create life in a new fashion or changing their habits? Where is their version of an Android, lol? Come on. I don't remember one single episode of Star Trek with a bland setup like this.
Just compare our present with let's say 1917. A colossal leap. But the most advanced civilization in the universe is supposed to stick with one way of life that works for millions of years?

You sure are assuming a hell of a lot to try to make a point. Who says there aren't more engineers out there in the universe somewhere doing god knows what. And even if there aren't, it's completely possible for a race of beings to decide to stick to living a simple way of life. But that's not what Scott is focusing on anymore so it doesn't matter. Maybe you should write some engineer fanfic or something.

I thought the movie was entertaining enough for the most part, but I'm no longer looking forward to the last film in the trilogy. I don't feel like there much of a story left to tell other than how LV-426 came to be. Still too much of the "people making stupid decisions in space" stuff happening that made the Alien parts feel more like a slasher flick rather than a scary Alien movie. There were hardly any tense moments, and killing off Shaw like that really took me out of the film. It lost the mystery that was set up by the ending of Prometheus.

It's probably around the 3rd or 4th on the Alien film list. For me, I still rank it under Alien 3's Assembly Cut.

It was great, and the way Ridley has successfully expanded the thematic ambitions of the franchise with both Prometheus and Covenant has been very surprising.

Just like with the last film, I'm sure me and other diehard Alien fans feel very alone in enjoying this movie a lot. I think it's probably my favorite Alien film, now. I've been watching for as long as I can remember, which is a long time because I'm 33 now. I've really tried to dig deep into the lore like many of you that can't stand this or the last effort from Scott, but I truly enjoyed it. Even with some of the "ok WTF. that doesn't make sense at all" type of moments. I'm willing to forgive some of the bs when I'm being entertained. Again, I'm a big fan.

I'm a huuuuuge alien fan. I loved Prometheus too.

That'd be cool to see. A whole ship full of different abominations just roaming a dead ship, killing each other.

I have enough Alien toys to call myself a diehard fan, and no. This was a bad movie.

Like, I'll defend ALL of the Alien flicks but this one I dunno if I can. I want to see it again though because I have a problem.

It is interesting that two of Ridley's original Alien ideas found their way into this. The ship as a bomber being one and with Alien he wanted the creature to win in the end and radio back using a crew voice.

Yo, I just watched the assembly cut of Alien 3 and anyone saying Covenant is worse than that is nutty.

NUTTY I SAY

No offense but anyone who will defend Resurrection over Covenant is not someone who's taste I'd trust.

It would be pretty strange that no Engineers that were off-world would eventually come back and see how messed up the planet is. It would be hard to believe that all of them just happened to be on the planet at the time.

But it doesn't make sense super advanced civilization millions of years old capable of seeding life across the universe are seemingly wiped out by a single android and their own magical life goo. Yeah, ok I guess it keeps with everyone in these films being utterly stupid with the exception of David.

I feel exactly the same way. Watched Prometheus like 6 times and loved the lore.

I feel like Covenant was a wasted opportunity. And it did a lot of things that "Alien" fans should love, like the look and feel of the ship was very "Alien" like. But everything besides David/Walter was just dumb AF.

At the beginning of Prometheus isn't there a massive Engineer ship that we have yet to see again? I'm guessing that city isn't all they had and is probably just their religious epicentre.

Did anyone else's theater burst out laughing at the "I'll do the fingering" line, or do I just live in an immature area?

Didn't realize this was a thing until I came into this thread. So no, no one laughed.

Just got back. NOT GREAT. Just seemed totally unnecessary. Fassbender was good, but that's pretty much all it had going for it. It's like they heard people didn't like Prometheus, but they kept the stuff that was bad (stupid-ass crew doing stupid-ass shit for no reason) and got rid of the stuff that was good (Noomi Rapace, the mystery of the Engineers). Very weird choice.

Just... unnecessary.

Yeah I don't know how "die hard" Alien fans would enjoy this when the actual xenomorph action is where the ball is really dropped.

It shows up for the last ten minutes, isn't at all frightening, then gets easily taken out.

And I hate to be this guy, but the CG is way less effective than the man in the suit approach

This thread is the nicest I've seen people be towards Prometheus. Are people gonna hate the next movie but say good stuff about Covenant!? i c u

Monocle died for our sins.

Ridley Scott should make a movie about it.

The first act of Covenant is very promising. Great set up. Ridley Scott is always amazing with these first act set ups where he sets up the world and the technology. It was great in Prometheus as well. Being immersed in this sci fi world is the best parts of these films. But they fall apart when they have to be suspenseful monster movies. If they could get Ridley Scott to direct the first act of these movies, then get someone else who knows good horror pacing and structure to direct the rest, Covenant could have been amazing.

I don't know if it's just years and years of watching scary thriller and horror movies, but I'm not really watching these to be frightened anymore. It takes a lot for me to become moved or uncomfortable with what I'm watching. I think the off screen scene in Game of Thrones with Sansa's rape had more of an affect on me than any more in the last ten years or so. The last couple of movies that had a couple decent scares for me were Conjuring 2 and Sinister. I didn't really need any sense of tension to build up because that's not why I was watching this film. I used to be afraid of Aliens until I hit about 12yrs of age and realized "this is just a really good action film where Bill Paxton's character should have been the hero" lol

Reminder:

typically, "theater burst out laughing" = "a couple people audibly chuckled in a row nearby"

I think there's a name for this phenomenon, but I've forgotten it.

I'm sure there are other engineers through out the universe whether Scott decides to use them again is doubtful.

There was about 30 people who laughed/giggled as if it were a comedy scene, which was a significant amount considering the theater has recliners instead of seats and doesn't seat that many people.

Oh you counted!

That usually doesn't happen.

At my screening (probably seated like 150 people) I heard a few chuckles too.

The word "Fingering" is pretty much funny on its own at this point.

Maybe frightening is the wrong word, more like, the Xeno lacks a frightening "presence".

If those last thirty minutes weren't so rushed, maybe the Xeno would have been more effective. That conflict was resolved much too quickly.

I don't know why, but despite my disappointment, I actually want so see this again ASAP. It gets a lot more wrong than it got right, but it's an interesting sort of failure.

It didn't help that I had to leave the theatre twice to narc on a dude who was snoring loud as fuck behind me during the movie. I missed the whole David flashback on the planet, which sounds important.

I've mentioned it before in this thread but I think the neo/xenomorphs all acting/reacting the exact same way to something crossing its path takes some of the fear away.

They basically act like the grim reaper in Kid Icarus at this point. If it sees you it's just YAHARHARHAHARH while the orchestra falls over.

They didn't used to act like that.

I don't even remember that line and I don't think I heard anyone laugh at anything unintentionally.

By the way, any indication or guesses as to how Scott plans to connect these movies to Alien? I keep expecting these movies will end with the derelict engineer ship crashed on LV-426 but now I'm questioning how that'll happen with David on the Covenant.

If he thinks he's created the perfect organism (he hasn't) then the next step is, after acknowledging Walter's correct diagnosis that he's slipping gears, perfecting himself.

Which he'll probably attempt to do via his "perfect organism"

I keep expecting these movies will end with the derelict engineer ship crashed on LV-426 but now I'm questioning how that'll happen with David on the Covenant.

Either another Engineer ship will come find them, or Walter will fix himself and fly the juggernaut off the planet and catch up to them.
