Alien Isolation PC Performance thread

Is anyone else finding the fmv sequences a little choppy? They are running at 60fps but they just don't look right to me. Rest of the game is fine, just the fmv.

Also is SMAA T1X better than T2X?

This has been an issue in a lot of games. I'm not sure the reason. I'm getting a similar situation in Shadow of Mordor. Game runs silky smooth but the shitty compressed FMV stutters.

I thought the intro could cutscenes could have ran smoother but the framerates looked fine. May just be what they look like.

I've played close to an hour, and the game is running incredibly well. I have an i5-3570k, HD7870 2GB card, and 8GB's of RAM. Runs smooth, no slowdown or chops to be seen, I'm really impressed with the performance, especially since it looks great.

I know this is a PC performance thread but I am curious about this little fact that a 7870 manages 89FPS average but PS4 is locked at 30 with missing graphical effects compared to PC version? That does not make sense even if you factor in the lower clock speed in PS4 GPU and the differences in CPU (there should also be a small gain from console specific optimisations due to a uniform platform)

So I just saw the alien for the first time. I quickly forgot about SMAA TX1 VS TX2 and high tailed it to the nearest desk and am still hiding under it. Fantastic!

i5 3570k
670 4 gb
8 jiggawhats of RAM

Game holds 60 fps at 1440p until I get grabbed by the xenomorph. For some reason, it dropped down to 24 fps while it kills me.

I'll probably just play it at 1080p if it drops like that every time I get killed. While it doesn't effect gameplay, I'd rather have it be consistently 60.

Turned SMAA down to T1X and now it only drops to 40 when I get murdered. 60 fps every other moment. I can deal with that.

Afterburner says they are running at 60. Which is probably the issue tbh. Encoded at 30 but running at 60.
Fraps always tells me that cutscenes are 60 when they're actually 30, it's nothing new. This is kind of like the TLoU:R situation where the transition to 30 FPS is so jarring people think something is wrong with it.

Hey ya'll, trying to download the game on steam but it keeps unqueueing, I can get to download a lil at a time if I tell it to start downloading but then it just goes back to queue. Anybody have the same problem?

I think you're underestimating just how CPU-bound current games can be:

The CPUs in the X1 and PS4 are far from anything special -- the Jaguar line from which they hail is intended for low-power devices like lower-end laptops and, well, game consoles from manufacturers that want to opt for profitability more so than raw power.

Also is SMAA T1X better than T2X?

We dont know yet, it could be better. Alien Isolation is the first game with SMAA T1x.
Ryse will be second one in several days, but Ryse will have even more refined T1x, but at least we can easily compare it to Crysis 3 T2x.

It definitely handles temporal aliasing better.

Ps. I personally probably would play this game with max downsampling setting and 30hz lock. Its very slow paced game and with high quality motion blur, its actually viable to run FPS game in 30hz.

They probably just wanted parity with the FMVs for the more exciting and immersive cinematic feel of 30fps which better conveys the visceral terror of the game's atmosphere.

Since I realised Google is my friend I've come to the realisation that my rig meets the minimum specs for the game. Wonder what kind of performance that will get me in game..hm. I'm just gonna assume there wont be a benchmark or demo to try the game out.

CA had a conservative target that both consoles hit without issues.
The PC bells and whistles are relatively subtle, especially considering the dark nature of the game.

PS4 CPU is utter garbage, and the game is pretty CPU heavy.

Ok I think my AA isn't working. I think it is because I can't get the game into Full Screen. It flashes and minimizes. I have tried everything and I can't get it to take. It is still running and I can hear it.

Running great in 7852x1440 so far, fps usually hovering in the 90s area. Nice to see EyeFinity working well.

i7 3960X @ 4.8 Ghz
2 Radeon R9 295x2 QuadFire
64GB DDR3 2133 Mhz
Rampage IV Extreme
4 Samsung 850 Pro 512GB in raid 0

Gotta figure out how to downsample this.

The PS4 is nowhere NEAR as powerful as a 7870.

That gain you talk about is insanely small.

Is it just me or is the anti-aliasing not really that great?
There are a lot of jaggys in the game.
The game itself looks great, but I haven't seen such a bad aliasing in a game for a long time. Maybe I'm doing something wrong or it is just me having a lot of problems with aliasing, but so far I think it's really hard to ignore.
I tried bot SMAA options and tx1 looks a bit better, but absolutely not satisfying enough for my personal taste.

I agree. It needs a few more options. About the only complaint I have with this game!

Good to hear I'm not the only one. It's even more annyoing with the game looking really great in every other aspect. Will try to force anti-aliasing through Nvidia.

EDIT: Tried it with Nvidia but it didn't change anything, really strange..

It is pretty bad. I tried downsampling along with the games AA and it made zero difference.

I figured out my issue with minimizing. It was teamviewer's partner interaction addon. The little arrows that show in the top right of web browser etc.

Some of the settings are a bit backwards. Like the FOV slider.

Yeah I noticed that as well. What the hell is that about?

Which makes me ask, what is the better AA? T2X or T1X...

I really need some side by side comparisons.

Also the options should be changed to - AMBIENT OCCLUSION - SSAO -> HDAO

Not SSAO - Standard -> HDAO

Oh one more thing max FOV = 75? Why?
