Sub, that's cause the anime that I downloaded via limewire was all subbed.

I was trying to remember when I first downloaded the show, must have been around 22 years ago.

No spoilers yet I guess?

I watched all the movies between last night and this morning. Maybe I’m dumb but I felt kind of lost many times, probably made worse by browsing information about TVs for much of the third movie. Mari’s character is kind of confusing to me in general too. She just shows up without any backstory

It's Eva. Not even Anno understands what it's about. The best way to even try is to just play the simplified story in a Super Robot Wars game. It does give you a dilemma of whether to keep Shinji in the Unit 01 for some godly long range damage or to deploy him in Unit 13 for godly close range damage plus Kaworu as a subpilot.

Have you seen the TV series? If not watch Mega64s videos

First time watching these.

1.11: B. Well made but redundant retelling of the TV series.

2.22: A. Great execution and different enough to be compelling. Likable characters throughout, beautiful animation.

3.33: D. Terrible plotting, boring, Shinji angst overload, loss of all character development from the prior film. Shark jump.

4: F. Dull, incoherent gibberish. Lazy expository dialogue to push the plot forward between meaningless action set pieces. Script may have been generated with GPT-3 for how random and pointless it all is. Fancy concepts are named and never explained or utilized meaningfully, one after another. A chore to sit through.

TV series still has a better ending overall IMO.

At the time, people hate the TV ending but think that's cause its so different to the previous 24 episodes.

I prefer the 'meta' ending of the rebuild movies if it truly is the end of anno's evangelion.
It's not just series or rebuild. There's also the wonderful movie End of Evangelion available on Netflix, iirc

The series, EoE and Rebuild all have weird endings. I remember detecting episode 25 and 26 when they first came out. I was so lost. It really is fascinating reading through the Eva wiki, helps you understand a lot but still makes you confused about various things.

I don't hate the Rebuild 3 movie but it was very talky and I wished someone would talk to Shinji properly and explain what was happening.s1

I dunno about that. Amuro, Kamille, Hikaru from Macrossbarent really alpha. Chirico from VOTOMs totally is tho
Amuro had to get roughed up to get in the robot, Kamille regularly threw hands with Quattro and tried to fight back against Wong. Dunno about Hikaru though, not seen the original Jpop Gundam.

Yeah 3.33 is the reason why I haven't watched the fourth movie. 3.33 was a terrible watch and such a letdown that it retroactively ruins the prior movies (which I thought were good). Shit felt like fan fiction to me. I can't imagine the fourth movie being worse.

Fyi if you want an easier and more comprehendible ending read the manga.

Well I understand that Anno wanted it to be different in terms of tone, angle, story and also this to be a closure. I appreciate it for what it is and it doesn't diminish what was done before, End of Evangelion is still the best ending and movie.

It felt rushed and you can tell they did a Star Wars ep8 with 3.0, they didn't know how to wrap it up. It just feels silly that the wait was so long for that.

Interesting documentary from NHK about Anno and what they went through for 3.0+1.0
(Also weird process to generate ideas for the storyboard)

I know, I did just re-watch that. I am slightly torn between the two. I think EoE is a better ending in terms of actually making logical sense. I don't know if it's a better ending for the characters and whole universe. I think that's the underlying thing that's Anno was trying to achieve and has skewed the film enough that's throwing people off.

I think each endings are pretty good, my favourite is still the TV show personally.

I am still not 100% sure what Shinji did at the end... did he basically.
Dia astranagant or flashpoint in a way that Eva and Angel no longer exist yet pull Askura, Rei and Kawora soul into the rebooted universe. What about all the people that die in N3I? Did they people exist as if there was no angel/eva?

I think so but I don't think he brings back anyone that's dead at that point so no misato and kaji. Whether that's a choice or not I don't know for sure, I think it's a choice though as he has accepted his past and the loss of the loved ones. I think Mari still has the most outstanding questions about how she basically stays her ages but motives I can rationalise as a promise to yui.

I liked 3 the most. It was like Tron Legacy, style over substance. Amazing fights and music.

I mean in a straight sense, Asuka, Rei and Kawora are consider dead but he upll them out and put in the new world. I wonder what happen to the peopel who survive N3I. Do they remain as they are or are they reboot into the new universe with no memory of eva and angel. Also the ending scene lookj really peaceful with no tell-tell sign of N3I red color

First hour I was like EviLore is on some shit. This movie is actually good. The final battle onward though? Holyfuck it's AWFUL, he was right.

Anno sabotaged his cash cow and legacy hard. Guess he really is done with it. Oh well, original TV series and End of Eva remains intact.

Did you not like it because it was so crazy and over the top?

I feel like after 20-something years of this series and the rebuild movies up to this point, and as I’ve got Prime, it’s my duty to see this through. But after 3 I’m looking at this like some sort of chore that must be done

I'm amazed amazon was ok with all the fan service in 4, definitely not a chore so far for that one. I've only watched part of it, but it's ridiculous.

I watched the anime series. Is there a movie version of the series? I want my friend to see it, but he won't watch an entire series.

I think there's a movie called death and rebirth that kinda summarizes the series. But watching the series is better. As commented here earlier by others these latest rebuild movies is kind of retelling and some of the earlier movies kinda summarize part of the old eva series.

No, it tried to add closer and throw new concepts in and blend it together on top of piling stupid concepts to amp up the stakes.

It's just a mess of a movie. I waited 9 years for this? Lmfao. Anno really is a hack.

how is ir retcon since it is a reboot?
I think Rebuild is the same as FF VII remake. The original story happened and then continued over into a new timeline to repeat the events.

Just a massive yikes from me.

I enjoyed it. Evangelion finally made sense to me.

I watched the first three a while ago but honestly forgot about them. I jumped straight to 4 this time and the recap was enough.

I watched 2 and part of 3 today and now I think I understand better.

Enjoyed it more than the original series.

Nah Gunbuster is awesome and NGE is revolutionized the industry and Shin Godzilla is one of the best movies to come out that year . It's just he completely misstep with this.

Alright, that was weird.

I'm surprised I hadn't bothered to watch any of the new Eva movies, and the first one came out in fucking 2007 goddamn time flies when you don't care about shit anymore.

1 was cool, 2 was cool, 3 was cool in concept but kind of a mess, 4 was a little strange too and it lost me a few times, but I was entertained. The cgi in 4 was too much. CGI big head Rei looks weird compared to hand drawn aesthetic Rei in EoE. The Eva 01 vs Eva 13 fight gave my burly brawl vibes in a bad way.

It's a good thing I watched all 4 for the first time in a row. I probably would have been disappointed if I had actually waited years between them.

It surprised me that it took until now for me to notice what the "Neon Genesis" significance was.

I also got Rise of Skywalker vibes because how the fuck did NERV have the manpower and resources to build all the shit they have with only Gendo and Fuyutsuki...
