Alright GAF, what 100 million selling system would you erase from history if you had to pick one?

Erase one of the 100 million+ selling systems from existence completely.

To date, there have been seven systems that managed to sell more than 100 million units lifetime; presumably two more are going to join that list eventually (PS5, Switch 2), but right now, these seven are it.

These are seven legendary systems that each impacted the market massively (obviously, that's why they sold that much). They are all massively beloved, and they are all going to have legions of fans.

But if you had to erase one of these systems from existing completely – like it never happened, and any immediate impacts it had on the market were preempted as well – which one would it be, and why?

Probably the Wii. Although it had a few standout games, the majority of the stuff there was shovelware casual shit.

I don't even have to vote to know this will skew to the Wii by a heavy margin. The reason would be because Nintendo might be 3rd party at this point.

Ain't happening, bitches.

i do NOT want to generate a war… but is almost pitiful that none MS system achieved this feature

that being said, wii, because even Nintendo did not know what to do with Wii's success

The reason is that Wii was just a gimmick console that found success with folks who were not gamers. Had everyone chasing the motion control fad which dramatically changed Xbox's fortunes as a results.

The DS. At least the Wii gave rise to Xenoblade. Xenoblade is better than any title cooked up during the DS's entire lifetime.

Touch choice.

I didn't care for the PlayStation 4 as much as the other ones listed, so I chose that one.

Some additional thoughts:

I love the Wii for Xenoblade and a handful of other gems. Plus, it can function as a GameCube and a nice emulation rig.

The DS and Gameboy are too iconic to get rid of.

The Switch mostly sucks, but it's my current day JRPG machine.

Finally, the PlayStation 1 & 2 are GOATed, so there's no touching those two. 😁

At first I thought to vote for Game Boy, but then I realized that that would mean the complete erasure of Pokemon, including anime which became a huge part of my life in various ways.

Voted for Wii instead.

If Nintendo made the Wii with the power of the Wii U originally, Twilight Princess HD as the OG TP, I think it would've gone on to sell Switch numbers with third party support on the same tier as 360 and PS3.

But the Wii... I ended up having a smaller library there than I did the Wii U somehow

Game Boy or DS you can take your pick.
Both useless imo…

Game Boy Advance SP & New 3DS are both superior options. Plus if you really want your few decent GB or DS games are backwards compatible.

Wii for sure, DS second. Did both have some excellent games? Yes. Nintendo also went full gimmick, and totally lost their way. I moved to PC gaming and thought I'd never go back to consoles, until the Switch and PS4 changed the game.

Nintendo Switch

Uninterested in portable, and as home-console hooked up to a TV its too weak for its price, ditto on Switch 2 in 2025.

PS4 was when Sony made the most profit from the least effort (imo), changing them into the company that they are today. This is also when they moved their HQ to California.

Erase all of that, maybe they stay a JP company with all that it entails.

They would have stayed a JP company that produced 1-2 JP games per year like in 2012 or 2015, yeah...

Wii did some things that were new and fun at first, and it got some absolutely brilliant games, but by the end it had become a shovelware dumping ground that also set the stage for Nintendo's biggest failure ever in the Wii U. By the time the Switch came around they had abandoned the concept altogether (even if motion controls still exist as an optional input method). The Wii was also the start of Nintendo lagging a generation behind technologically. All in all, it might have been better if it had never existed.

Yeah sure Nintendo had to differentiate itself from the competition and make the Wii but they could've done their wii-mote gimmick along with a ps3/360 level and still have record sales.

Preferable, honestly. Not like they've currently got a lot of first party stuff coming out this year anyways. Yotei and maybe Fairgames, wowee.

I voted for Playstation, without that console we wouldn't have all the stupid Sony warriors acting like Sony is the second coming of God.

Wii - watching your nan play Wii Bowling on Christmas day and then never using the system again (or your nan for that matter) I'd wipe that one.

PS4. Most of it's games are multiplatform so we would be losing the least there.

Why would I even want to erase a console from history?
Erasing even one of those hugely popular consoles would inflict a big hole, as in a loss, in the history of videogames.

The Wii may have just been a fad, but it was a very fun fad while it lasted. I can say hand-on-heart that I had a hell of a lot more fun with the Wii than I ever did with the Switch, hence my vote for Switch.

I enjoyed Wii a lot, but out of the options I think it's the one that'd leave the smallest gap for me perosnally.

PS1 and PS2 (and any other hugely popular console listed in OP) too found success with 'not gamers'.
WII has a tie ratio in the same range as PS1 and PS2 (around 9.x).

Wii, with this console, Nintendo, which always wanted to offer the best to its users with powerful consoles for its time, died and began searching for its blue ocean and happy families.

Wii was a fad but it was a fucking great one that gave me tons of fun. So many fun nights with friends + alcohol + Rabbids/Wii Sports/WarioWare/whatever. Even all the wives/girlfriends loved it. It was such a fun social gaming experience that we will probably never have again.

I voted PS4. Yeah it was a good system for a good price, but it was basically just a budget PC in a box and was probably my least used console ever. And Sony's big AAA narrative-driven games honestly bore me to death.
