Am I overreacting? RE: being called a "maricon" by an NPC in a game

Watch Dogs 2 came out recently and as I was playing it, I was called a "maricon" by a character on the street. That's essentially the same as calling someone a "faggot". I posted about it twice in the OT for the game and received 0 responses.

Doesn't this strike anyone else as odd?

So you're saying this is a homophobic slur? What language is that? What culture does this word come from?

I haven't played WD2, obviously. Do they say the F word in GTA V?

Odd how? Are asshole video game NPCs not allowed anymore?

And it's not sneaky just because a bunch of you guys have never heard it before. For fucks sake

Maricon? Never heard that one before.

Edit: Oh... It's Spanish for faggot. Probably in the game to give you an idea of how the populace thinks about you.

I mean.. I guess people would shout that in real life so props for the realism? Someone once screamed "fag" at a friend and I on the street before :P

Never heard it and I am not going to google it at work if it's a slur.

Can you give us some history on the use of the word outside of the game?

Edit: Thanks.

Its def an issue but you didn't explain it well, (I know language barrier is an issue).

From urban dictionary:

maricón
Latino English and Spanglish

1) Derogatory term; crude word for a gay man used by straight men and women to insult gay men or to question the masculinity of straight men. Comparable to faggot.

2) A crude word for transvestites, comparable to tranny but more rude.

3) Affectionate term of address used by certain gay men to address other gay men, often in jest.

4) Term of address used by many South American girls, especially Chileans, to address one another.

Well I mean if you're going to get insulted in Spanish I guess that's one. I thought WD2 had like uncensored genitalia and stuff too no? Takes place in SF? I mean walking down the street in CA and getting called a mamon or maricon prob isn't out of the picture. Least out here in LA it wouldn't.

You're overreacting.

It is a Spanish-language slur but it has nowhere near the connotations and history of hate than faggot does.

Please note before people start their bullshit: I'm not freaking out about this or losing any sleep, I'm asking if people find it odd. I just can't imagine other slurs being "okay" like this apparently is.

but maricon is accepted by RAE. it has other meanings other than used as derogatory for homosexuals.

Did you have subtitles enabled? Are you sure the NPC didn't say "American?"

probably need a subtitled screenshot for this to gain any traction.

Have you ever played a GTA game before?

Would you guys feel the same thing if the game was calling the player a hard ER N word?

I honestly don't think it is acceptable to use homophobic slurs any more. It's 2016, in case you guys haven't noticed.
The "trying to convey realism" excuse doesn't work either, for reasons that have been discussed to death in this forum.

Edit: in case I'm not clear enough, you don't need a slur that diminishes a group of people based sorely on their sexual orientation to offend the player. That are hundreds of other slurs that do not convey a homophobic message.

You are right OP, this is an outrage. An open world game about crime set in the city, the NPCs should curse like Flanders in order to feel authentic.

I'd think that the context would be key, as it would if a TV character or movie character did/said something bad.

If it's used to establish the world/character then that's quite different from just including it for no reason or because the creator(s) thought it was cool or agreed with the message.

Scorsese, for example, does not think people should become mobsters and kill one another.

I'm not sure what you want to hear, exactly. You're not freaking out, losing any sleep or otherwise offended or upset. You posted it in the OT twice, nobody bothered to respond so then you took to OT and made a thread to get.. what?

You also kill people, that's not acceptable either.

no I think you're right. if you're going to use a slur it should be for a good reason. having it be a random NPC bark isn't a very thoughtful way to use one.

I would just beat the shit out the character in the game

You use that on the street where I grew up in and youre not getting home. Some good friends might use it among themselves, but yeah, it's meant to be s huge insult.

To get you pissy, apparently. There are several other threads for you to read, dear.
