Am I overreacting? RE: being called a "maricon" by an NPC in a game

Watch Dogs 2 came out recently and as I was playing it, I was called a "maricon" by a character on the street. That's essentially the same as calling someone a "faggot". I posted about it twice in the OT for the game and received 0 responses.

Doesn't this strike anyone else as odd?

Random assholes shouting obscenities? Sounds like the authentic San Francisco experience to me.

yeah it's odd to have put that in a video game.

You know, I don't think I need this level of immersion in a video game.

But you go have fun, kids.

Did you miss the Mafia 3 discussion? It was similar but it revolved around the N word.

Many people argued that removing it would sanitize the game. However, race is a big component of the game's theme.

Yes?

Its slang meant to establish the way an NPC talks and thinks of you, no different than an NPC using any other kind of potty talk. People talk like this all the time. Its not glorified in any way.

If the main character was tossing it around casually it would be totally different.

Asshole people exist in real life, not sure why I'd be upset that asshole people are in videogames too.
As I get older, I'm totally understanding why the Japanese don't get open world "realism." I don't need this shit in something I buy for fun. Why are all of our top open world games like this? But, you do you, guys.

Isn't that basically the definition of being more acceptable? Maybe you mean appropriate?

acceptable
əkˈsɛptəb(ə)l/Enviar
adjective
1.
able to be agreed on; suitable.
"the electoral arrangements must be acceptable to the people"
2.
able to be tolerated or allowed.
"pollution in the city had reached four times the acceptable level"
synonyms: bearable, tolerable, allowable, admissible, supportable, sustainable, justifiable, defensible, defendable
"the risk had seemed acceptable at the time"

We shouldn't tolerate its use just because it is widespread.

Do NPCs commonly call player characters faggots in AAA games these days?

*Edit*

This is a genuine question and nobody wants to answer it I can't understand why.

Do localized versions have English speakers calling you a faggot?

Good question. I assumed it was English and there was an NPC in San Francisco who used a Spanish slur against the player.

Also, I wonder how common the word is in real life, specifically in San Francisco. I've only ever heard it used a couple of times personally.

It's about world building.

This is a direct line from the GTA's focus on realism, albeit as satire, that has influenced the AAA industry. Moreover, there are other games to play luckily. Nintendo would never do this, for example.

Do unsavory characters not exist in fictional worlds?

Legit curious if other games call player character faggot or other slurs? I don't recall anything that harsh in GTA or otherwise

Because our idea of escapism isn't as extreme as the Japanese one. Japanese adult life in general is incredibly depressing, and so many people look for mediums that help them escape as much as possible and to try to help them remember the good times.

If you look into it, it's actually really sad.

It's a homophobic slur still regularly used in some countries like fag or gay was used in the US in the 90s.

Colloquially usage could be:
Slur
Something akin to "pussy" in the also unacceptable insult kinda way
And something more mild insult/affectionate term to your friends

Does it have a place in games?

Is it gratuitous? Or does it add some context regarding the views and backwards culture of npcs in the game?

Please note before people start their bullshit: I'm not freaking out about this or losing any sleep, I'm asking if people find it odd. I just can't imagine other slurs being "okay" like this apparently is.
Go play mafia 3. Ppl are racist/homophobic in real life so video games should reflect that.
Kanye shrug

How many games take place in pseudo-realistic modern San Francisco? Kind of a false equivalency.

Our closest comparisons are GTA npcs having potty mouths, Witcher 3 npcs using gendered insults against Ciri (bitch, whore, etc), and Mafia 3 leaning into foul racial language.

IMO I've spent time in spanish speaking communities and its either this word or "huevon" for #1 in street talk. Certainly realistic.

This is a genuine question and nobody wants to answer it I can't understand why.

Just answered it?

In puerto rico maricon means faggot as well.

And yes OP you are over reacting... It's a mature simulation game and that npc was an asshole. Doesn't mean any designer was out to offend your sensitive feelings...it's just part of how the game world was created.

Yes, you are. They used a spanish swear word in a game, huzzah.

As much as it might be unnecessary in the game, i'd suggest you move on with your life without letting this bother you.

Yes, you are. It's a fucking NPC.

You are playing a rated M open world game that also has rampant killing.
You are getting the experience you wanted.
I will assume the NPC was spanish or mexican?

So... the word faggot... how many of these NPCs use it?

Or are no games thematically appropriate for the usage of the word? ;)

Just answered it?
I was talking about the first hundred or so posts that didn't answer the question. Obviously I wasn't talking about responses that would happen after I made such a comment. What an odd thing to say.

If words like faggot aren't used in english I don't see why they made an exception for using it in spanish. Either go all in on realism or don't, I say. Half measures are lazy.

That said I have no idea of WD2 uses it or the N or C words. I doubt it would though. If it does then at least they can fall back on the realism excuse.

Speaking of which I wanted some big floppy dong physics. Instead I got these button dicks. TF.

I mean.

I mean...

It's cause we get to live out our violent fetishistic super hero fantasies through the relatively sanitized video game universe.

It certainly ain't for the story.

I'm not a huge fan of open world games tbh, not because they have offensive themes cause... well duh of course they're going to have offensive themes, but because mostly they're extremely shallow experiences that have small little gameplay loops meant to tickle and entertain in way that I don't really get that much entertainment out of.

But like... why do we consume any kind of offensive "realistic" media? Sometimes it's for the story or art or some deep personal reason or whatever and sometimes it's cause we're big dumb animals who're entertained by dumb shit.

I dunno where I'm going with this.

To answer the OP:

I don't know if you're overreacting or not, the slur is completely unfamiliar to me and I don't know the context in which it was used in game and I don't know the context in which it's normally used in real life and I don't know who localized it or who did a quality check on that localization.

I do know that unless a game is set in the 70s or 80s or you really want to drive home the idea that an NPC is a real shitbird you probably wouldn't have an NPC calling the Player a "faggot" in any games today.

You are most definitely overreacting. I live in Costa Rica but was born in Venezuela, and maricon can have multiple connotations depending on the context in which its used.

Also, it's a videogame and some NPC is calling you names in Spanish. Does this really warrant a thread?

In Spanish (from Spain) maricon is faggot. You can use it as an insult to call someone a "pussy" like someone said here but it comes from the connotation that faggots are pussies.

Btw. this made me remind of the greatest FFXI NPC ever for a spanish speaker
Translated as "whatafaggotd" in english

In my case, I see enough assholes in the real world, and well, they're assholes.

But I'll just be over here playing Katamari Damacy. You do you.

Not saying I enjoy being around assholes, but I can respect a developer wanting to craft something faithfully representative of the world we live in and the things we might experience that aren't superhero-level antics. It seems clear that was there intent when you see how accurately mapped (albeit condensed) to San Francisco it is. Not every game should adhere to escapism and levity contrasting with "realism", and it's great that the massive amount of games being made today means that isn't the case.

This planet is no longer for me. It's a random fake dude trying to be an asshole. NPC should just yell compliments at you. "Nice shoes you handsome devil!"

In the year 20XX "Nice shoes you handsome devil" is slang for "I hope your entire race is shot into space and then your spaceship has a catastrophic hull breach and also you lose your parking ticket"

I mean, why not

Hey man, I kickstarted Butt Sniffin Pugs because it's a game where you play a small dog who helps other dogs and people and they give you cool curio gifts in return and the world is awesome cause you're a Butt Sniffin' Pug.

There's games out there for everyone.

Uh... okay. I responded to your post and noticed you edited to say no one was answering your question.

To name every specific game that uses that specific word, in whatever language, is sort of missing the point. Its trash talk. Plenty of games (like the three I mentioned, which are similarly open world AAA games - which is what you were asking for) use foul language as a means of world building, characterization and tone setting. Its realistic. People say terrible things.

Like, without having touched Watch Dogs 2, I can infer that the NPC saying that is probably uneducated, spanish-speaking, and a dude. I can also guess that hes specifically making a dig at how fly the main character looks. Thats how language works!

You dont have to feel comfortable listening to it because its not a comfortable word.

Why do these games not have NPCs calling players faggots?

Unless they do? Still nobody tells me whether calling player characters faggots is a common thing in AAA titles nowadays.

I made that edit before you posted though. There's a timestamp.

Why do you think devs don't have their NPCs calling player characters a faggot? Unless they do, nobody seems to want to say one way or the other.

If calling player characters a faggot is considered an ok thing to do in video games, by all means. It just seems odd that you can only do so in foreign languages. Kind of misses the point.

They should set the next one in Canada so that every bullet fired at your character can realistically be followed up with a sincere apology from the shooter.

I think you're just overreacting. The NPC is expressing what the environment is like. Never take anything from a video game personal.

I was hoping to have some kind of discussion. Instead, we have people falling over each other making the same smug point.

Why do these games not have NPCs calling players faggots?

Unless they do? Still nobody tells me whether calling player characters faggots is a common thing in AAA titles nowadays.

It's not, at least not in my experience, which is why I found it odd. I just didn't realize the thread would be flypaper for assholes.

Well... I mean it's an open world game where you shoot people, run over people and commit random acts of violence. A random asshole NPC calling you a name is over the top and too much realism?
