Amazon is cancelling Metroid Prime 4 preorders

possibly by mistake

Metroid fans have been waiting for the better part of two decades for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. The sequel was officially announced in June 2017, and Amazon put up preorders sometime after that. Through the game's extended development, those orders still stood. Now, even after last summer's re-reveal of Metroid Prime 4, Amazon is canceling those longstanding preorders.

Presumably this is a mistake on Amazon's end, rather than anything dire like another delay for Metroid Prime 4 or even a cancelation of the game itself. GameSpot has reached out to Nintendo for comment. At least one person on GameSpot's staff noted that his six-year-old Metroid Prime 4 preorder--which was discounted to $48--was among the canceled orders today.

Sounds like a glitch or an error to me, or that discount to $48? Nintendo could’ve been like “Fuck that, charge the full total.”

I don’t understand preordering games. Anyone who has wanted a game day one has been able to get it since forever.

Limited stuff? Sure, but a standard copy? Ridiculous. You only risk getting a garbage game.
One reason is to get the physical version in your hand on the release day. Everyone doesn't have stores nearby, and maybe the online retailer is cheaper anyway.

Even then, if you kept someone's money hostage for 6 fucking years, the least you could do is to honor the original preorder price.

I don’t think Amazon takes a dime from you for preordering a game. Most places don’t.

Your only argument is you could’ve preordered elsewhere, but chances are everyone will be selling for the same price.

There’s really nothing to make of here.

At least in my experience, the retailers aren't even good at that anymore. It's been a while since I preordered anything but IIRC the last game I preordered came 2-3 days after release from Amazon. So at least from them, there really is 0 point.

Allright, for me it always works. Haven't tried pre-ordering from Amazon.. I would be very pissed off if that happened.

that discount to $48?
Nintendo: You charge what you like Amazon, wholesale price is $66.99

Bezos & Co: Fuck that, we've put bricks and mortar out of business, where else are they going to go? Why are we taking a loss? Oh, we're not.

I can't imagine pre-ordering from Amazon these days. They have been terrible at fulfilling their obligation at release. Not to mention the fact that the package has a good chance of being mangled by the time it gets to me.

Amazon doesn't charge you until the game ships, so no money was kept hostage.
Yeah, I kinda got the message the first time someone posted it.

In any case it was more a general consideration rather than a point against Amazon in particular.

You've got to wonder if they're moving it to $70 like TotK. Nintendo said at the time that they'd be using that price point on a game by game basis, but I wouldn't be shocked if it becomes the new normal for full-fledged releases moving into the new generation.

No doubt in my mind at all that all NSW2 first party retail released games will be at least $70 - I don't see why they wouldn't do the same with the crossgen stuff.

Hostage? You can cancel an Amazon preorder at any time before the item ships, as far as I'm aware.

That's not true for all games. There's always a few games that they don't ship enough of because they didn't expect that many people to buy it (at least that fast). With social media nowadays there are games that just go viral out of nowhere and a bunch of people want it, making it harder to get in store day one.

At all major retailers selling video games, there is virtually no risk to pre-ordering. Pre-orders can be cancelled and the deposit fully refundable. If you buy the game, the same rules apply whether you pre-ordered or not which is not the game can be returned if you don't open it.

There are often incentives for pre-ordering a game. Stores give discounts, free DLC, in-game items, in-game currency, physical items, etc. so it's pretty much just upside to preorder.

Some digital storefronts though don't have great refund policies (unless things have changed).

For digital, I agree, but if you like to buy games physically and you want to play day 1, you pre order. If the game gets terrible reviews you can cancel the pre order.
