Metroid Prime 4: Beyond | Review Thread

I'll admit I didn't like dread much, I think I said on here before that it's so linear that the one time I did get lost I got annoyed because everything was gated off and I was just wasting time.

And I really disliked the shitty mechanic in Prime 3 where you have to corrupt yourself, I seem to remember an annoying boss where you have to do it to out damage them healing, but I don't remember much about the game. Prime 2 I remember Quadraxis which is a great boss, the moth in the poison, the Ing, and an annoying door scan that can be missed early on.

Even if there is no "Euro techno" in Dread, the game is great at selling the sense of isolation that a Metroid needs to have. The OST (or the lack of it) does what it needs to sell that feeling, and that's why I think it's great.

The level design is also great — you can barely feel the invisible hand guiding you perfectly to the next area. It's not the best, but it's great.

The game is fast and the pacing is awesome. Samus's new movements and animations are great; they help sell the idea that she is an unstoppable badass. The ability to use the melee counter while running reinforces the sense of fast pacing and that nothing will stop her.

Even the EMMI zones are a test of your abilities, and if you know how to use them, you need to move and think fast — it's a great challenge.

Overall, Dread is a great game. My only complaint is that it's too easy to 100%, and it should have more shinespark puzzles..
I disagree. I think Smaus' movement is good yes, but that's about it.

The art is uninspired, there's really nothing memorable in locations, and the EMMI zones stay grey, boring and unconnected, they could've transformed them once the EMMI is dead.

The music is just the same as MP4, no themes only ambient when the Metroid theme kicks in. But in MP4 at least the ambient music is better.

The main mechanic is way over used and you can't finish the boss fight without, which is stupid and also shows how much they want to limit you in the game.

Overall the story in Dread makes more sense, even though it's paper thin.

Metroid was never scary, you were just ten years old when you played Super Metroid. You think kids wouldn't be creeped out by the Prime games?

Sakamoto does flirt with horror elements for the series but Other M is the only where he commits to structuring and "filming" the whole thing like an actual horror game. A shame he's never going to do it again and we're just going to get more half assed attempts like the SA-X and the Emmi.

Although in Dread's defense nothing is more truly horrifying than that godawful Metroid suit.

I'm not liking the control schemes. Split joycons so far only tho. BUt they are both kind of annoying. And a bit cramping. I guess I have to try the Pro 2 controller next. It crossed my mind a few times I'd rather just have the original MP1 GC control scheme.
How does the aiming feel compared to Metroid Prime on the Wii? I never played much of the GC versions, but I loved playing with the wiimote, you had excellent aiming. The arm cannon felt almost like a part of you.

About the EMMIs they are designed to harvest and study DNA samples. They create those zones and sterilize them, after the EMMI is destroyed, life returns to those areas because the EMMI aren't systematically killing and sterilizing everything in it, even it the area dont get "transformed" you can see biological life returning to the EMMis zone once they are dead.

What is the main mechanic ? the melee counter ? and how can you not finish a boss fight without it ? Do you know that at least 2 bosses can be insta killed by using different mechanics right ? Kraid ( with the morphball bomb ) and Z-57 ( using the shinespark ).

Also, you can break the game by going out of your way to get some upgrades earlier.

The music is good ( not great ), even if you have not played the game you can tell what kind of biome the music is just by listening.

Dread is a really good Metroid game and has ton of detail if you take the time to observe the game

The final boss, you can have it him all you want but it wont go to the next phase until you counter.

Again, diff opinions. I thought it was linear and lacking and dont remeber seeing any area after emmi getting transformes.

the area doesnt get transformed, but the biological creatures can return to the EMMIs zone once they are dead, its an important detail that helps with the world building of the game that most ppl wont notice.

sorry but that's just enemies getting placed after EMMIs are gone... didn't read that much into that.

IT's point to the side of center to turn. And point at the screen to aim (roughly.) Recenter (default) button is the right trigger. Seems very similar as I recall on MP3 Wii but that was long ago. I don't like point left or right of center to turn. The act of doing that always felt dumb to me. So not my fav.

Went to the desk last night to use mouse mode on a mousepad and that was my best experience so far. That despite switching from OLED LG tv to tabletop mode. Also for mouse mode...I couldn't take it any longer and had to swap X (scan) for B(jump) because B is easier to hit ( I don't have to lift my grip) while jump is (by default) (also) mapped to the left bumper.

Maybe they don't want the game to feel too much like Splatoon but that game does a better job of incorporating gryo aiming and stick turning. Granted that is aiming with the gamepad not pointing. I tried gryo aiming in handheld mode in MP4 as well and it felt weird. IT felt cheap. You have to hold down a button I guess to go stationary to aim. Sort of like MP1 on the GC but it didn't feel good to aim that way. It wasn't well done.

I think overall the controls could be much better. Maybe my opinion will change or fade as I get used to everything.
