Anyone get an Oasis? I really, really like the new design, except the lights on the side are annoying. The lights on every Kindle I've had create a sort of halo right by the light. But when they're they're on the bottom of the screen I don't really care since I'm looking down there when I'm reading.

When they're all down the side of the screen it's a lot more noticeable though. It's not bad, but it is noticeable, and when I paid $310 for this thing after tax I'd like it to be perfect.

Just curious if that's even possible though or if they all have this effect to an extent.

The only I´ve seen those light halos, was during the setup process, not a single time since. Neither when reading in the dark, nor in full sun.

If I have the light dim, like 8 or lower or so, or really high, like maybe 15 or more, I can't see them. But anything in between and they're definitely there.

It's not a huge issue, I feel dumb even complaining about it, but like I said when it's this expensive I expect it to be perfect. I wish they would have just left them at the bottom, they were less noticeable there and I don't see what having them on the side improves.

If anyone is on the fence about getting one, I don't think the ergonomics are really that much better than the Voyage. I mean, it is really comfortable to hold and really light, but definitely not a night-and-day difference, and the lop-sided bezel doesn't make much of a difference to me either.

Holding the Oasis like this:

is a lot more comfortable than holding the Voyage or Paperwhite the same way, and if I tried to hold the older models like that I'd sometimes accidentally trigger a page-turn.

But I never hold the Voyage like that, I always have my thumb on the bottom bezel (which you can't do on the Oasis since the bezel is much thinner on every side besides the enlarged one) and I lift it up to touch the screen and turn the page. Like this:

So overall I wouldn't say that the Oasis is that much more comfortable, especially if you don't have a case for your Voyage or Paperwhite since the weight difference won't be as large. The Oasis is quite a bit lighter than a Voyage in an origami case though.

Speaking of, I really miss that feature. The origami case came in handy pretty often. I used to read while eating breakfast using that to prop my Kindle up. It would have been nice if they found a way to retain the feature, it wouldn't have to have the same exact folding mechanism but just some way built into the case to prop it up.

And while I'm dumping on it, I really don't like that this $300+ product has the Amazon logo front-and-center on the cover. It's nowhere near as sleek as something like the Apple apple. If they were going to brand it at all I would have preferred it to say Kindle, or that they put the logo somewhere less noticeable like they did on the Oasis itself.

When I got my Voyage it has a higher resolution screen than the lower tier models, but now the Paperwhite, Voyage, and Oasis all have identical displays. The origami case was nice, but for the sake of $80 you could just buy a stand. I thought I'd use the haptic buttons on the Voyage but like I said above it isn't very comfortable to hold it with your thumb on the button. The Oasis buttons are great by the way.

I do miss the origami case a bit, but like I said it's not a big deal to buy a $10 stand. The build quality of the Oasis is nicer than the Voyage, it's really light, and if you like the physical buttons the Oasis' are way better than the Voyage's haptic ones. The smart buy is a Paperwhite, but if you're willing to get a Voyage and a case I'd spend the extra $30 or whatever and get the Oasis.

Oh OK. If you want a premium definitely go with the Oasis IMO. I miss the origami case, but the other positives of the Oasis more than make up for it, and if you adding the origami case they're pretty close to the same price.

I have a 2nd Gen PaperWhite. somewhat tempted to upgrade

I went from a PW2 to the latest one to satisfy my upgrade lust and am happy. Can't justify paying nigh on £200 more for an Oasis and the Voyage seems overpriced in comparison too IMO. I must have weird hands though, as I can use the PW one-handed and still turn the page with my thumb, so physical page-turn buttons aren't essential for me.

Oasis looks soooo good. Ungodly $400+ Canadian, but it looks like a forever device

There is an upgrade in contrast, they improved screen production. But the paper white is a real upgrade.

Just get the Paperwhite. It feels way better than the Keyboard. I upgraded from the Keyboard to a PW2 and it was great. The PW3 is an even better upgrade.

I don't know if this is something to ask in here, but my Kindle app on my iPhone has gone nuts since the last update. Asks me to sign in for the first time in ages, then acts like its new ("this is how kindle works", etc.), and when I get to my library, says there's nothing in my Cloud, and half of the options are in what look like Japanese (like, it asks me "what genres do you like?" and all the buttons are in Japanese).

Uhhhh. Any idea? I deleted it and reinstalled, still busted.

Edit: Okay...never mind. It sorted itself out after signing out, deleting again, reinstalling, signing in again.

Still, wtf, why was half of it in Japanese :|

It is. I found out that sending files as the kindle format doesn't work. Sending them in MOBI does, however. Seems backwards as shit.

If you buy Kindle compatible books from a third party, they come in MOBI format. And a few of these vendors have setup methods to email those books to your Kindle from their websites.

I know they do. I took the advice in this thread about formatting them so they read better on my voyage and converted them to the azw format which is amazon's kindle format. Turns out Amazon won't let you email the amazon format. Seems kind of backwards.

Yup, drives me crazy. That's why I stopped using the Send to Kindle feature. It's a shame.

I have an original Paperwhite, so I don't have the new typesetting features so converting my books isn't a priority. I've read plenty of MOBI formatted books and they are pretty good. Can't say I was ever taken out of the reading experience because of their format.

It is weird they don't let you email their format and use whispersync. My guess is they are the only ones that want to supply the amz format as such they only offer limited support for those that convert to it. I can't imagine many of their users convert books at all.

It is. I truly enjoy my Paperwhite 2nd gen. I bought the latest iteration when it was released and, although the screen resolution is improved, I didn't feel the improvement was noticeable enough to essentially double-dip. If I didn't already have the other paper white, I would've been all over it, however.

The turnaround on that kindle keyboard was fast; it arrived this morning. I do like the audio and text to speech but, boy, I am really missing the touch screen and general UI refinements of later kindles.

Lately I've been feeling in a reading mood, so I started reading the 1st Game of Thrones at night in bed. However, whenever the girlfriend is over, or I'm at her place it is difficult to read because the light has to be on in order for me to read. This was going to eventually start bothering me enough that I decided to buy the newest Kindle Paperwhite, so I can read with the light off.

I've read about the new features, and it seems like it's worth the upgrade coming from a Kindle Touch, but I'm still fearing I might have wasted my money. Some people say the difference in resolution isn't really that noticeable. Thankfully Amazon has a deal so that I could get a free $30 book and a $10 credit for a kindle book.

For those of you that have both, the Kindle Touch and the Paperwhite. Is the upgrade worth it? I'm looking to keep my Kindle Touch as it has the MP3 player and audio.

Can anyone with a Kindle Fire comment on how it works as an e-reader? I was reading a book on my kindle fire and after I went back to my collection none of my books are on my device except for the one I was reading. It shows them on my kindle cloud but I cannot open them or download them back onto the device. This isn't the first time I have lost my entire collection. Albeit it isn't much but it is still very frustrating.

I bought this device for college since I could rent textbooks digitally on it, but now that I've graduated I'm seriously considering purchasing a paperweight for reading books since I am trying to get into the habit of reading more often. Do books often disappear from the traditional kindle e-readers?

Left unsaid in my earlier posts was that I had also bought a touch for one of my children. I can tell you that you'll definitely notice the clarity from the resolution bump, especially with the aid of the lighting. Not only that, UI improvements and much snappier performance.

The only reasons I bought a keyboard were for physical buttons and audio. I'm beginning to recognize those were misguided notions.

The buttons are nice when they're needed, in theory; in practice I keep changing pages accidentally. The keyboard made me appreciate how good the keyboard is on the paperwhite.

It still has audio support and free 3G going for it but the bloom is off the rose. Comparatively, I just don't enjoy using it.

The Touch UI is much closer to the old UI of the Paperwhite. I went to get it to give more accurate statements and damned if the thing isn't messing up on me. Back button, shopping cart and menu button are lit up and I can't get it to reset.

IMO I'd just get something with more utility like an iPad or just buy a backlight. Seems kind of pointless to spend money on a dedicated reader when you're reading a little over a book per year.

Not sure what you mean. If you're asking if book get delisted often because Amazon lost right to them or something, it's only happened a handful of times. Maybe more often for obscure stuff, and I don't particularly pay attention to the issue, but I wouldn't factor it into a decision of buying an ereader. I'm not sure if that's what you mean though since that would effect both "traditional" ereaders and anything else you can read a Kindle book on.

I'm not talking about items being delisted. I more focusing on the stability of the device. With my Kindle Fire I occasionally run into the issue where my books disappear from the device and I have to go to Amazon's website to download the books.

Do you have a picture? My paperwhite's lighting is uneven but it's not really noticeable, but I wouldn't describe it as "someone was pressing on the screen".

They're all like that to an extent. Annoyed me when I got my Oasis since the lights are now places vertically up and down the screen instead of at the bottom, they seem more noticeable when your gaze is constantly passing them instead of them being more hidden away at the bottom.

I guess it's just inherent with front-lit screens.

I'm surprised it's still cost-effective to make the lower-res screen for the one model. The backlight is enough of a benefit to still differentiate the regular Kindle and Paperwhite.

They could at least have bumped it up to the 212 ppi that the first two Paperwhite models had by now.
