I think we are nearing the end here. With Luna department suffering hundreds (or thousands who knows) of layoffs last month, and the news the other day about Amazon removing around 50 games, most of the services direct library, by the end of this month, we are now seeing Amazon and Ubisoft team up with Ubisoft allowing Luna users to stream their Ubisoft PC library for free. Ubisoft also makes mention of Ex-Stadia users.
Just want to say Ubisoft has jumped in early on a lot of gaming fads that haven't panned out, and I think their biggest loss-win record, with no wins, has been cloud gaming so far. Various companies they have partnered with didn't get anywhere, including two major companies with Amazon and Google and TV's. Turns out it was all for nothing.
But imo, it looks like Amazon is winding down Luna. Once most of the library is removed by the end of this month as reported, Amazon Luna will basically become just another gaming hub where you can use other streaming services. This deal with Ubisoft letting you stream your games for free is likely just something to tide people over until Amazon is ready to call it quits on Luna.
Amazon Luna doing so poorly is actually remarkable compared to Stadia, because Google did things late or did nothing they should have through it's run. In comparison, Amazon brought gaming studios and put in considerable investment to make it work, so this is a much higher profile failure.
Of the remaining major standalone streaming services, there is only Nvidia GeForce Now left, or soon will be. I think Microsoft and Sony using cloud as supplementary was always the better idea.
Starting today, it’s possible to stream Ubisoft games you already own on PC through Luna. You'll need an active Prime or Luna+ subscription to do so, as well as a set of linked Amazon Luna and Ubisoft Connect accounts. Once you have those in place, you can play your existing purchases wherever Luna is available, including on Fire TV devices, Chromebooks and phones.
The list of compatible titles features some of Ubisoft’s best-known games, including Watch Dogs: Legion, Riders Republic and nearly every Assassin’s Creed game you could ever want to play. There are also a few older gems on the list, such as Beyond Good and Evil and Child of Light. A Ubisoft spokesperson told Engadget the offer extends to games the publisher allowed Stadia users to transfer to PC after Google announced the service was shutting down.
At first glance, Ubisoft letting PC players use Luna without paying for its channel may not make much business sense, but there’s an element of smart marketing to the plan. The best way for a company to attract new customers to a service is to give them the opportunity to use it and see the value in it themselves. After using Luna to play games you previously purchased, you may come out of the experience more inclined to subscribe to the Ubisoft channel.
