Why are there so many dogs? A corporate lap dog in Cocked? Down Dog? Mad Dogs? Who let the dogs out?

The Man in the High Castle sounds pretty darn cool though.

They might get one next month:

Comparing this to House of Cards? No way. The Bosch pilot was atrocious. I like the books and author, but the pilot was boring and felt unfinished. The potential is there for the series to be a lot better, but I despised the shit out of the pilot.

Meh. I liked it a lot. But this is meaningless. I was talking about popularity and Bosch might be very popular.
When it comes to quality Amazon already at last matched House of Cards with Transparent.

My post is meaningless because yours was unclear? LOL, okay. But point taken.

However, I don't see Bosch being nearly as popular as House of Cards, for a variety of reasons:

1. I love me some Titus Welliver, but he's not a star. Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright are.

2. Who reads the Bosch novels? Probably 50-year-old women on the beach, older men, and us (and even I've only read 1 or 2 - Lincoln Lawyer is much better IMO).

3. The show isn't great, at least judging by the pilot. Pilots are notoriously unreliable indicators though, so it could get a lot better. I hope so. But still.

No matter how you slice it, Bosch isn't going to be the "killer app" for Amazon's service. At the same time, it's not a horrible thing to have either. It might attract some readers to give Amazon a chance.

Also, it's worth noting that we have no idea how "popular" these Netflix shows are -- we only get small snippets from Netflix, like that Orange is the New Black is the most popular show on the platform.

That's true, but based on critical "buzz" and word of mouth, House of Cards and Orange seem pretty popular. Most of the others, not so much.

It was a good OP. I read it all and nothing really appealed to me.

Right, and going on social media alone:

Lilyhammer: 132,010 Facebook likes
House of Cards: 1,460,100 Facebook likes
Orange is the New Black: 3,171,144 Facebook likes
Hemlock Grove: 359,965 Facebook likes
BoJack Horseman: 224,760 Facebook likes
Marco Polo: 154,985 Facebook likes

versus:

Alpha House: 111,218 Facebook likes
Betas: 40,866 Facebook likes
Transparent: 179,948 Facebook likes
Mozart in the Jungle: 86,441 Facebook likes

Again, a maybe silly way to gauge popularity, but House of Cards and Orange is the New Black (and weirdly, Hemlock Grove and even BoJack) command an impressive social media presence that far surpasses anything on Amazon.

I imagine that if Transparent were on Amazon, it would do well and get renewed, but wouldn't be as popular as House of Cards or Orange.

I think you're dead wrong. I think the pilot was great and it will be hugely popular. It will dwarf anything else Amazon has made. THe books are very popular and the show will be distributed on the very same place the books sell most of their volumes. Amazon's ability to cross promote this will be huge.

Will it be as big as House of Cards? Propably not, but no idea honestly, especially since we have no clue how popular HoI really is. But I think it has high chances to be first hit for Amazon Prime and will will be the "killer app" for it as much as any show can be .

Amazon propably won't release numbers, just like Netflix doesn't. Heck, they don't even release sales number for Kindle. I guess a good indication of it doing very well will be if we'll seen new shows based on popular current novels series in future Amazon's line up.

Agreed about Amazon being an ideal home for the Bosch show because of the books. But I can't see how the pilot was great, unless you're a Bosch fanboy. Something isn't going to be a "killer app" because it appeals to people who were already fans in the first place. It needs to generate an audience beyond that, and I can't see the boring, unfinished pilot doing that too successfully. Unless the show becomes dramatically better (it may, and I hope it does), I don't see it lasting more than one season. Then again, quality often has nothing to do with it. The horrendous Extant (Halle Berry show) somehow got renewed for a second season.

Well, plenty of people don't think like you do. It was rated very highly and I doubt all it's viewers are fanboys of novel series and then among those fanboys so many are incapable od juging it fairly.
To me the pilot was very strong. Well shot, with strong cast and very interesting plots started.

I can understand you not liking it, but I find it pretty amusing you seem to be in such a shock not everybody got the same impressions from that pilot.

It was only this week I watched the Bosch pilot , and I liked it a lot. I can't agree that it was awful at all.

For me it did everything a pilot / 1st episode needed to and left me looking forward to the 1st season.

What happened to that show about the guy who just got out of prison? I remember him and his sister going on an aimless drive one night to unwind.

What? The After canceled? I thought it was already picked up for a season of 8 2 hour episodes? Out of all the originals Amazon got going on, it was the one I was most excited for.

These shows sound mostly like garbage. I'll check out The Man in the High Castle. Point of Honor sounds particularly stupid from the description.

Betas was junk. Silicon Valley is much better. And you also got Halt and Catch Fire which while not being quite the same thing, is close enough, and also better.

I mean I enjoyed Silicon Valley too but its a completely different type of show.

I'll check out Halt and Catch Fire

There's something slightly brutal about Amazon throwing a bunch of mediocre or bad pilots into a pit with a few good ones, and then letting the court of public opinion thrash and reject some quite loudly. All this, when Amazon certainly could whittle down their picks to a handful of plausible hits.

illegal immigrants are stealing our air
Down Dogs could be the next californication if down right

Cocked, Mad Dogs and MITHC all look really interesting as well. Prior to this the only show they offered that was worth it to me was alpha dogs but I am going to give these shows a chance.....

also Amazon really likes the word Dogs in its show titles....

Sad that Amazon canceled the only show I was interested in (The After). The pilot was super rough and definitely not up to the standards that I hold for Chris Carter but the premise was interesting and I feel like with some improvements it could have been a worth while series. Guess now we'll never know.

Completely different type of show? I don't see it. Betas and Silicon Valley have a ton in common. Why not both? Because it's not a Coke and Pepsi situation... It's not even Coke vs RC Cola. It's Coke vs Store-Brand Vomit-Cola. If Betas had gotten a second season, I might have watched it, but that has more an indictment of how I waste my free time than an endorsement of it as a show.

Of the three I think Silicon Valley is clearly the best, though it's too bad that one actor died. He was really fantastic in his Bill Gates Weirdo role.

Transparent is great. And I thought the Bosch pilot was solid too.

Nothing else inspires much confidence for me, but maybe I just don't want to set myself up for disappointment with the PKD adaptation.

What about The Cosmopolitans?

Deadline says they ordered more scripts as of October, so I think it's still in contention(?)

It's dead.

When will Stillman learn? Should've cast Chris Eigeman.

Seriously though, I'm not surprised. The pilot was as frustrating to watch as his last film.

I watched Down Dog this evening. (Amazon is apparently sending out a few invites for early viewing on a couple of the pilots.) Paget Brewster is good, as always, but otherwise it was pretty forgettable. Not really my thing.

did any of the pilots even get picked up last year? i liked the one with sarah chalke and the indian dude...

Hand of God and Red Oaks did.

They might.I mean, they just picked up a Del Toro show and it looks like it will skip the pilot season completely and they will internally decide it;s fate. Might be a sign of things to come. Altough I would miss the pilot season. It's bizzare and yet very fun experience. So I hope that they will be making at least one of those each year.

Ha my roommates played as extras in the Man in the High Castle, they filmed a bit in Seattle's International District. Well I'm going to have to watch now.

RatskyWatsky

Hunky Nostradamus
Cocked: Sounds promising plus it's set (and filmed...?) in Colorado so I have to root for it.

Down Dog: Don't care.

Mad Dogs: Sorry Shawn Ryan, I'd rather just watch the original.

(two 'Dogs' pilots though? okay)

The Man in the High Castle: Ambitious. High concept. I want this.

Point of Honor: Me <3 period pieces. So. I want this too. Even though the plot sounds dumb as hell.

Salem Rogers: Why not?

James from True Blood sounds exactly like Vampire Bill. Like, to the point where I'm assuming he practiced his southern accent by watching old episodes of True Blood. lol

(anyway, looks decent and actually pretty high quality - sets, costumes, etc.

will watch.)

Looks pretty epic. I think i'll watch it if i hear it's good.

Posters for new pilots.

Interesting, so MAJOR MAD DOGS UK ANS US SPOILERS. IF YOU SAW ORIGINAL UK SERIES YOU CAN READ
Ben Chaplin is not playing the same part he played in original. He's actually one of the guests and Billie Zane is the one who'll be killed at the end of the pilot. Good, because i liked Chaplin in original.

I have no use for this model of programming. I respect the idea to try something new on Amazon's part, but the vast quantity of amazing TV out there right now, I have no desire to waste an hour(or more) on shows that don't at least have a guaranteed first season. Like the show, wait a year if you're lucky? And worst case scenario, something like The After, which actually got picked up but isn't coming. Make the decisions yourself Amazon, and give us the shows when they're ready.

it's not for you, it's for people willing and interested in taking a chance on this stuff and planning to give them feedback. how does this hurt you in any way? you don't want to watch something before there's a guaranteed first season? ok, then don't? as is they are "making the decision themselves" and "giving you the shows when they're ready".

this is sort of like saying "i wish software companies wouldn't do betas, i just want the finished software when it's ready".
