AMD RDNA 1 & 2 GPU Driver Support Moved To “Maintenance” Mode, Game Optimizations & New Tech For RDNA 3, 4 & Beyond

Maintenance is not EOL. While this is unusually short by about 2 years, it doesn't mean your card is never getting updates or will stop working.
That's correct, but it also means no more fixes for games with some sort of problems on rdna2. Only security updates. So for future games this means rdna2 is dead as problems will never get fixed by amd.

Absolutely appalling on AMD's part. Their GPU driver support track record was never good but to dump a bunch of 2 year old GPU into "maintenance" is a new low.

Then Nvidia still "maintain" everything far back to 600 series/Kepler GPUs from 2012 by that logic. They still receive occasional driver updates, the last one was in July of 24.

Whoa .. I can understand rdna1 but 2, too....
And that in days when games get fixed by drivers over and over again...
The "problem" seems non-existent on Linux from what I am reading with open source RADV though.

EDIT: This doesn't change the fact that AMD just shot themselves in the foot with this one.

So far I am content with my 9070xt build but I will see what the future brings.

No need to shill for either brand but when the time comes for an another upgrade I'm gonna be more thoughtful about my GPU pick for sure.

Now that I think about it, doesn't this mean the stillborn Asus ROG Xbox Ally is now abandoned by AMD only like a week after it launched? 😂

Yes, they did. Talk about friendly fire....
This decision from AMD not only sends a bad message to normal consumers, but also to AMD partners.
I hope there is so much backlash from everyone and every company, that forces AMD to do the right thing.

Woah, never would I have ever thought. That jumping from 6700xt to 9070xt in March would have saved me an headaches later on...

I also sold my 6800XT in March. But if I tried to sell it after AMD announced the send of driver support, it would have been much harder to find a buyer.
And I would have to lower my price much lower.

No. Nvidia only maintains security updates for those GPUs. The cutoff point for optimized drivers is for the RTX 2000 series.
AMD still provides security updates for GPUs prior to RDNA2. The problem is that there are no optimized drivers for RDNA1 and 2, from now on.

Guess when then time comes to upgrade from 9070xt to something newer I'm gonna look more towards Nvidia, their Linux drivers seem to improve also.

Speaking of Linux drivers, I'm curious if RDNA1 and 2 will be supported more on Linux than on Windows. Lmao.

Thank Valve. If it were up to AMD, it would have already died, so much so that they killed their open-source version, AMDVLK.
On Linux, their effort is minimal; Valve and Collabora do most of the work.

Same thing with consoles. On a PS5, the software support is from Sony, AMD only provides the hardware.
Similarly to data centers, I see that some companies prefer to create customized solutions for AMD GPUs rather than using ROCm, for example.

AMD sucked at maintain their products afterwards
Remember Vega64?The most L video card in a decade

A videocard should receive support for at least as long as a console generation lasts. I'm still in a RTX 3090 from 2020. Imagine if I had bought AMD instead. Yikes!

Oh shit, this is really a bad move... I think I'll consider Nvidia Super cards before upgrading, it's a good thing that I cannot spend any money for a while... My only problem is Linux support

AMD clarifies RDNA1 and RDNA2 will continue receiving game optimizations based on "market needs"

Good. Radeon backtracked on their stupid decision.
Too bad they sullied their reputation, again.
Seriously, the Radeon group needs someone more competent.
AMD is doing great on CPUs, but their GPU division is constantly screwing up....

Heck, even GCN cards are still getting support on Linux.
