Well, im studying abroad in China in a few months, and i was wondering what the best voltage/socket adapter is because i recently bought an Iriver and there is no way im leaving that behind.

I looked on amazon for a bit, and found this one looked like it fit my requirements...

...But the problem is, is that i read some reviews of similar products, and there were some complaints about these things not working, so i was just wondering which one would you recommend? This one doesnt have any reviews, so it made me a bit nervous

Also, any advice on what to do, what to see in China would be fantastic, or just general studying abroad/travel advice would be great as well.

Thanks

Do you even need one of those? I'm not 100% sure, but voltage might be the same... I went to Taiwan and didn't have to use any special adapters.

Traveling abroad advice, are you Asian and do you speak Chinese at all? I think Chinese people in general are a lot more tolerant of foreign speakers than, say, Japanese people are :D

Im a white boy, who will have about 1.5 years of college mandarin under my belt before i leave for Beijing. Hopefully that will be adequate to get me by in the begining.

Im going for the spring and summer term so i think ill have about 1.5 to 2 months to travel around China, and the program i signed up for sponsers a lot of field trips as well, so hopefully ill get to see a lot of China besides Beijing.

I checked around a bit, and it said Chinese sockets were 250v/50hz 10A max (no idea what that last bit means). Well, here is where i found it, so you can see for yourself if you want.

I'm in Beijing right now. You'll find the sockets a combination of US (flat parallel), Australian (angled, plus earth), or twin round plugs. the sockets I have experienced can be any of the three or all three (some sockets have five hoels that accept and of them). the voltage is in teh 200's, I think 240. not sure about frequency - I use multivoltage ACadaptors, so it deosn't matter. Strangely, though, my Powerbook adaptor, which doesn't have an earth doesn't go in many of the plugs, depsite the shape being right. I think you NEED the earth plug for the Australian socket. I managed to find one that fits, but since it isn't earthed I think), it gives me a slight buzzing thorugh the metal case of my powerboo, and small electric shocks through the screws. hope I'm not damaging my powerboo, or myself.

I had an interesting taxi ride tonight, consdiering I know very little mandarin. Managed to hold a conversation well enought, though.

Definitely go see the Summer Palace and Forbidden city. We shall be going to the Wall at some stage soon, so I can report on that later hopefully. If you want a meddley of traditional chinese culture (piercing opera, magic tricks, and other various perforamnces in an hour and a half), visit the Lao She Teahouse (we were there tongiht, and it was pretty fun). You could always go to the night market and eat scorpions too.
