Finally getting the chance to look at the coaches film for the Giants/Cowboys game since they put it up. Looking mainly at the secondary and some of the coverages the Giants ran. It was a mix really but for all of the folks that say Fewell is in love with soft zone coverages, he seemed to run plenty of single, high press man coverages right out of the gate. Webster spent a good bit of the game (going from memory) doing just that against Bryant though there were plenty of snaps where he had a safety shaded over him as well.

A few gifs showing the press (one for Webster and one for Prince who also had his snaps against Bryant before leaving the game with a concussion. Both of these are a single high safety looks:

Coming off of an awful season and I've certainly dinged him plenty, Webster looked pretty good in the first quarter (which is about as far as I've gotten into the tape)

Changing gears, Austin got a good 18 yard completion on us in the first quarter. In this particular picture, I'm honestly not sure who fucked up. Bryant gets a free release here and Tony with a bit more patience could have had him for a bigger gain. Rolle sees something that makes him move up but it seems like he and Rivers (55) end up covering the same man letting Austin get behind them. Not sure who was supposed to be covering him (I'm guessing Rivers?). Feel free to post your thoughts on this one.

More later as I go through the game. I've already taken some images of the defensive line play (Rogers/Jenkins looked great. JPP, not so much).

Looks like the LB, basing that mostly off the way he reacts when he sees he has doubled Whitten. Always hard on these b/c I don't know rules for pattern matching and hand-offs

Watching the coaches film of the Giants/Chiefs. Some positives to take away:

It's a 9 yard David Wilson run. A few things to note here:

- James Brewer (#73) gets a good block to open the hole. He's in for Chris Snee who's been abysmal up until this point in the season.
- The tight end in this formation, Bear Pascoe (#86) comes from the other side of the line to put a block on Justin Houston. It's not a great block but just enough to keep Houston out of the play.

11 yard run early on in the game. Cordle (#63) gets a real nice push here up the middle which is primarily responsible for the gain. Scott simply follows his block.

Tight end blocking gag reel:

Larry Donnell (#84) 1 on 1 vs Tamba Hali. Maybe I'm being a little unfair as it looks like Beatty was supposed to double him? Considering his movement in that direction it looks to be the case until he sees the safety blitz and whiffs on that, too!

3rd and 1 pitch to David Wilson. Three tight ends into block on the right side:

Pascoe (#86) goes low and whiffs. Myers (#83) barely holds a block and gets pushed away by Houston who makes the initial hit on Wilson. Donnell (#84) makes the most decent block out of the bunch in pushing his man out of the way enough so that he can't hit Wilson.

Regarding the game - this play pissed me off the most:

I mentioned this in the NFL thread - Steelers fans complain about the team being old, particularly at LB, but plays like this are why the older guys play ahead of the young bucks. The ILB Williams (#98) slams into Hood, removing both of them from the play. Foote was weak, but he filled gaps which slowed the offense. Williams gets his body in the way and Polamalu easily cleans up the play. Instead it was a long TD.

Williams did the same thing later which resulted in another AD touchdown.

I probably asked this before but is there a mandated formation for FGs and punts in regards to how far back the kicker is? With legs getting stronger and stronger and seeing guys punt from their 20 to the other 20, I'd been wondering why they don't kick from a yard or two further out to help avoid a blocked kick.

Are those sufficiently rare enough for it to not be a concern?

The distances are standardized (7 yards and 15 yards) but there is no rule requiring those spots. I think the concern would be that long snappers train for those distances and making the switch, while certainly possible, wouldn't be worth it since the gain is likely negligible.

Still trying to figure out what the hell caused Nicks to cut off the route on this one. He actually gets rather good inside position off the snap and is in a good spot for the route, but then he just slams on the brakes for no reason.

Pretty mundane play, except that Jones (#95) was caught overpursuing - he did it earlier on a read option play that Geno took for 9. Fortunately the Steelers weren't burnt for it, but Jones was benched after this. Worilds came in for him and got a sack the next play.

Williams (#98) really shined on this play too. Dude has closing speed, didn't get caught in the wash chasing his responsibility. There was another tackle for loss Williams had I wanna take a look at.

This play may look familiar - it was the same one that Baron Batch dropped on SNF last year. After that play it was obvious that Batch was a goner.

Jets playing this one run all the way, which leaves them vulnerable on the edges. Cromartie gets burnt bad by Sanders on a double move, Ben notices it, and the it's nothing but daylight for 6. Amazing what commitment to the run will get you.

Another routine play, but I just wanted to point out why Ziggy Hood (#96) is so frustrating. Dude is far and away the strongest guy on the team, yet it doesn't show up on gameday. He's easily blown 4-5 yards off the ball on some plays. Here is no exception. Howard and Willie Colon (who I miss like hell - team needs a nasty road grader) get under his pads and completely drive him downfield. C'mon Ziggy - it's nice to defeat boxes and floor mats but how about beating a block on 3rd down every now and then?

It's no surprise that Hood was absent on the goal line stand against the Bears 3 weeks ago.

First Turnover of the season, five games in. Geno threw to a spot on the field. Don't think he processed what was there until the ball was out.

Steelers obviously saw something on this, as Gay [#22] keyed in Clark [#25] that the motion man was getting the ball. Gay jams him at the line to throw him off his timing, and Clark comes over and snatches it. They were damn sure too, as Clark left his man wide open in the middle of the endzone.

This is the second play by Williams [#98] I was referring to earlier. Great read and attack taking down the screen in the backfield. This type of play was Foote's specialty, but he didn't have the size or speed to beat blockers to the ballcarrier anymore. Vince Williams does. He's starting to get it.
