"AMERICAN HORROR STORY: Coven" - First Teasers

First season was a mess. Second season was a mess, but a much more confident mess that was endlessly more enjoyable.

Also, you might as we title that 6th teaser "Werk."

I thought the second season was much better than the first, but it did kind of fizzle out towards the end. Still, a very entertaining and unpredictable show!

I'm so excited for this. I feel like what made the second season so much stronger than the first, was the fact that it was more comfortable with its' own identity. It knows what show it wants to be - a mashup of horror tropes, played (for the most part) dead straight. As it gets more confident, they'll be more willing to embrace even more outlandish ideas.
My one complaint is that the seasons always seem to go on too long. There's always a few filler episodes, and you can feel plot points being dragged out longer than necessary.

The first one would have been excellent if it wasn't for the annoying family and the vomit-inducing romance between the two teens. But as it is now, the 2nd season just ran around circles the first one in terms of being the better, more interesting season. Even Evan Peter was much more tolerable in the 2nd season than in the 1st.

Asylum is the better season because the writers realized that the show is a hot mess and decided to run with it.

Yeah but at the same time I am actually quite shocked to find that so many people seem to prefer the first season as well..

Me too! Season one was almost unbearably awful. The actors had no idea what to do with the material they were given and the overall tone was much too serious.

Are they ever going to pick up the story from the end of season 1? Thought the murderous baby story had potential.

Ryan Murphy mentioned that he would like to revisit that storyline at some point, but he said this just after season 1 ended so I have no idea if that's still in the cards.

Truth. They just went all out for Asylum, throwing every crazy thing they could think of into the brew. It was quite a sight to behold. I hope Coven is just as crazy.

I love both seasons equally. I have a feeling this one will be more like 1. Asylum gave them the oppurtunity to do really really crazy shit.

I think I may like this season the best. I am nuts about anything brimming with occult/witchcraft lore for some odd reason. The setting, the premise just sounds so fantastic. Just hope it's beautifully shot and designed like the second season. The first wasn't quite as interesting in that regard.

Teaser 6 was fucking great, btw. The imagery, *drool*

I question whether this is still the plan. It might be nice to do a series when Lange has left the series (I actually don't want that to ever happen but the way she talks about it at the end of each year makes me think it's tiring for her) and have the BIG REVEAL at the end of the series to be that it was linked to Season 1.

But I do wonder whether they planned from the beginning for it to be an ongoing series, or if they just decided last minute to make it an anthology series. The open endedness of the first series, when contrasted with the closed nature of Asylum makes me think it was more of a lack of foresight than anything else.

Asylum was one of the best shows of last year, hopefully they maintain that level of craziness. Season 1 was alright (ugh that last episode) but it didn't have the week to week entertainment of the second.

Any season that has Dylan McDermott tearjerking/crysturbating can't be truly awful, though Asylum was much, much better.

Probably not, though I too think it would be interesting if they did a serial killer baby/antichrist storyline in a future season (maybe the final season) as a tie in to season 1.

But I do wonder whether they planned from the beginning for it to be an ongoing series, or if they just decided last minute to make it an anthology series.

They said that they planned it as an anthology from the very beginning. That was supposedly how they got Connie Britton to sign on so soon after Friday Night Lights ended. She didn't want to be tied to another ongoing TV series, so a one and done deal was perfect for her needs at the time.

I guess they just didn't want to announce it at the beginning because anthologies had pretty much fallen out of fashion and I guess they didn't want to have to have to face any extra scrutiny right out of the gate.

Season 1's ending was rushed because they got started later than expected due to having to wait for Glee to end, which made things so hectic that they considered dropping the final episode altogether and ending it with episode 12.

Any season that has Dylan McDermott tearjerking/crysturbating can't be truly awful

This is true. I also forgot about

and the sexy maid.

So Witch school vs. Voodoo clan? lol, I'm ready for this.

There's something so campy? drag-like? I don't know how to describe it. There's this weird, non-sexual gay stylization to the series that seemed so deep rooted in diva subculture. Everything about that last trailer was just so flamboyant and precise, especially that ending.

It's not a complaint at all, just an observation, especially when juxtaposed with more sterile broadcast series with insipid art direction. When I imagine the type of show Bravo would want to create when they get into scripted, American Horror Story seems exactly what they should be doing.

It's from the creator of Nip/Tuck and Glee, if that helps in your thoughts? :P

You think the real-housewives writes itself?

No, I mean, I know who created it. It was just a comment on its more unbridled flamboyance, decadence, and gayness. It's a compliment to its unique style that doesn't really exist in scripted television.

I get the "vibe" you were talking about from Nip/Tuck too, so I thought that might be what you were getting out. Particularly the later seasons.

This is how I feel and yes teaser six is amazing!

I don't like snakes but that image is hot as hell.

Oh my god, is Jessica Lange's "daughter" from Season 1 returning?

Jessica Lange asked for this and I'm thankful Ryan Murphy gave her it.

The first season was meh (mostly because of Tate), but the second season was amazing! I hope this can live up to that! :)

I still have to see Asylum (come on Netflix) but I'm assuming with how loosely they're connected I should be fine jumping in here?

I don't think any season of this show will top Asylum for me.
Nazis, aliens, insane asylum, the devil (?)
... It doesn't get any better than that.

Angela Bassett, Jessica Lange and Kathy Bates as witches make the chances pretty good, though.

I honestly don't think Kathy Bates will be playing a witch. The early interviews with her state that (not sure if spoilers but will mark anyway)
she begins as Jessica Lange's greatest friend but then somehow becomes her greatest enemy
.

You can read about the character Kathy Bates is playing here. It's based on a real person.

But I have a theory that each actor / actress will be playing two characters. So we'll get a Kathy Bates in the modern day and one in the early day. Both two sides of the same coin, if you will.

My actual prediction, which I'll spoiler anyway
There will be two storylines, but through magic Lange's character doesn't actually age, so she's been on the scenes for decades and her character will feature in both storylines prominently

I get the "vibe" you were talking about from Nip/Tuck too, so I thought that might be what you were getting out. Particularly the later seasons.

The later seasons of Nip/Tuck were definitely batshit crazy. The excelled at riding the "so bad that I think it's actually good" line that this show is constantly straddling.

I know I've commented on this before in another thread but my go to "so bad it's good" plot was when Nip/Tuck made Matt into a
robbing mime
I mean, what the fuck right? That preposterous storyline still brings a smile to my face every time I think about it.

Ryan Murphy is definitely a unique voice in television.

Each season is completely standalone, not even loosely connected in terms of story, so you'll be fine.

Hopefully they put Asylum up on Netflix soon since you haven't seen it. It was awesome/horrifying.

Just read that first episode synopsis. Can't fucking wait!

I really, really need this season to be more focused. I realize some people love the whole kitchen sink approach, but I did not finish Season 1, and at times had to struggle to finish Season 2. Sometimes, there's just too much, which means shit feels short-changed.

Also, we need more Lizzie Brochere this season. That girl is fine. It's those fucking crazy eyes, guys. I want her to rip my clothes off and have her way with me.
