Not my cup of tea and I find myself unusually upset that these are going to rake in an unconscionable amount of dough. Perhaps it's primarily because it's a business move meant to appeal to a demographic of which I'm not a part, and has me feeling left out.

Just bought a Pikachu one...because I don't have any Pikachu figure somehow (Have various Sonic stuff, Samus and Pit Figmas, Mario Figurarts, Donkey and Diddy Kong Plush)...so this is how justified buying one (could have also bought Kirby as Fox, Link, Marth, and Peach's look like shit)
I just wish you could fight *AS* your Amiibo fighter
But that's what you do in Smash all the time

I'm planning to get Marth and Pikachu, but I'm incredibly tempted to get more... like Samus/Link/Kirby/more possibly. Oh god damn.
And of course I have Captain Falcon on preorder, and I'm doing Shulk because of exclusivity, and ditto for Meta Knight when that happens.

It's also the first ever transferable DLC and cross game DLC if you think about it. It is kind of a neat concept on the software interaction side, and at worst you've got yourself a nice collectible figurine.
Wouldn't Skylanders count as cross-game DLC? Or the LittleBigPlanet DLC working across all the games, including LittleBigPlanet Karting? Or Rock Band DLC?

I think this is actually missing some of the appeal of the amiibos. My friends who have children didn't buy Skylanders or Infinity figures just to play games with them or to collect them.
They bought them for their kids to play with, which is what I think will happen with these things as well.

My ex-fiancee is buying a Mario Amiibo and Luigi Amiibo just because she thinks they are cute. She doesn't play any video game. I guess they'll be shelf or desk decorations.
If you buy a Mario Amiibo, you will level up that one character. You can't transfer it to another.

Yeah, that's another use for sure. They aren't exquisitely made, but I'll certainly display one or two at my desk as well.

You need a Mario amiibo to save a Mario moveset to and take it to a friend's house to use that Mario (with a custom moveset you've created)
You can also level it up to 50 and it can be a great fighter for your team or for you to train against.
You can't use it for another character and you can't transfer levels or anything like that.

I am. I enjoy collecting figures of characters I love, I doubt i'll be using them for anything in games.
What are you going to do with these if you don't have a Wii U?

For everyone saying these will be bottlenecked by Wii U, I think Nintendo have mentioned an adapter for NFC and not to mention the New 3DS will land next year (and I've already got mine, praise Nintendo Australia).

I have a Wii U and only really want a couple just to put on the shelf to look at. Having 3D physical incarnations of some of my favorite characters I have enjoyed over the years isn't that strange. From what I have seen they look nice. The in-game functionality is just a bonus for me.

Yeah I guess so, but this is the first that I think does so between entirely different franchises/series. Link, for example, works in Smash Bros, Mario Kart, and Hyrule Warriors, that's 3 different series by 3 different developers, even.

On another note, amiibo training could turn into a fun sort of mini-metagame. At tournaments Nintendo could have interstitial amiibo-only matches where competitors enter their own amiibos to fight each other. I think this would be a great way of promoting them.

I had them preordered right away, cancelled when I saw some of the "in the wild" pictures, but now all this talk on GAF is making me want to order them again. Ffuuuuuuuu

You could hoard them and maybe hope to sell them at some point when people will fork over quadruple the price they were because they become rare or "retired" as they're supposed to do.
You can keep them on your desk, shelf, work space, dashboard etc as a fun little piece of Nintendo merch (considering most retail stuff is Jakks pacific stuff and kind of garbage, these are actually relatively nice all things considered)
You can stock up and have them ready for when you do eventually buy a Wii U.
You can collect them just because you like a certain character or series.

The display at my local Wal-Mart looked decent enough to me. If I were you I would go to a store and see if they're good enough for you.

Do these work in the 3DS Smash the same way they do the WiiU one?
My Walmart had Link and Fox out, and honestly I compared them to some of the Disney/Skylanders figures and they looked to be of higher quality and more detailed. So I really don't get what everyone was ragging on them about.

On topic, I don't really care about these as gaming accessories, but might pick up the Donkey Kong one for my son. Loves Donkey Kong. Hopefully he doesn't destroy it. He's 2 1/2. But whatever, he has more expensive toys than that. Maybe it can be part of teaching him to be careful with his possessions and respect them, etc.
..Nah, he'll probably just destroy it.

I just hope Nintendo doesn't try to play their usual game of artificial scarcity. Better of just selling these as much as they can as fast as they can. If not it's a wasted opportunity IMO especially when they need the positive cash flow.

FigureGAF is very particular on their sculpts/colorizations. When you drop as much as many of those folks do on figures in general, it's easy to see why they're picky.

And that would make the first-shipment ones even more valuable, since they'd now actually be a limited-edition.
Nintendo could also make the stands in a rotating series of colors, and there would be plenty of repeat-dippers.
You'll probably have a couple month window. If it's super popular they will reprint until such a point stores don't want to order more.
