Sheik, Sonic and Bowser are up for preorder for Canadians at Amazon.ca

Bowser looks...a little strange from the pic, but they made his skin textured which is nice.

I'm not sold on Sheik or Sonic either.

I'm most excited about Toon Link, Dedede, Megaman and Ike though.

I can't even beat my PIkachu anymore lol

Level 28.

They've been there for about a week or more now.

The video is misleading. Deny it all you want. They purposely make it look like you are these characters. At no point does the commercial show that it is a virtual fighter controlled by the cpu.

And it is very easy to judge the commercial differently when you already know what the Amiibo is used for in Smash Bros. I watched this commercial knowing nothing about the Amiibo.

Either way, it is pretty damn useless. Unless you are some weird kid with no friends.

What about the part where every time they show them playing the game there are only 4 players who are all using Mii fighters and there are cpu fighters they scanned in with their amiibos fighting alongside them? Did you actually watch it?

How do you interpret this as anything but the amiibos fight alongside you? Did you think that 4 people were having an 8-player smash playing as their miis and just decided to have 4 CPU teammates based on the amiibos they owned but the amiibos didn't actually do anything?

I'm a casual amiibo guy, barely knew anything about them. My 6 year old nephew wanted them and I picked up two of them for his use on my Wii U. Was shocked they were NPCs, actually pretty pissed about it, I thought you could actually play the characters. He was also extremely disappointed in that. He doesn't want a pet in a game, he wanted to play as the character.

So, speaking as a casual fan, you are 100% right, I was mis-led and I think a lot of people will be too, especially when they learn they are fairly useless.

There is a video Nintendo put out showing some kid sucking at Smash Bros. He goes home and buys the Mario Amiibo and comes back. Games shows he is level 50 and everyone says "someone has been practicing".

I also mentioned that in my previous post. So that is what led me to believe it stores your level data..

Here is the very misleading video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3c_JDDp99k

Oh, by level data I thought you meant saving stages from the level editor. Of course it saves the amiibo's level. Its maximum level is 50. So that's not misleading at all, the kid loads in his amiibo, it's level 50, the amiibo saved his level data.

I know it might come as a shock to some poeple, but you can already play as all those characters in the game for free without purchasing a figure.. Unlike Disney infinity and skylanders.

How? I'm not talking about unlocking the chars and playing that way, I'm talking about playing with your levelled up special character you assign moves to and level up???
Uh just make a custom fighter ingame and equip it equipment/custom moves much like you can for an amiibo.

... You can already assign moves to characters you play as and give them equipment to make them stronger.

The leveling up is for their AI routines.

NYR :x

Anyway, I went to heaps of stores today looking for a nice Kirby amiibo. I went home with nothing. I was so disappointed to see that all but one was taken. Some stores had no amiibo in sight. Completely empty. Some stores only had Mario, Yoshi, and Pikachu. A few had WFT and DK... but no Kirby.

I really want a Kirby now. The only one I saw had a bad flaw.

Maybe Nintendo should have given an option to...
Announcer: "play" as the Amiibo figure, customize and bring it over to a friends house!

So more like a personal data holder. It seems like that's what people expected?

No, it was advertised clearly to be an AI that you train.

And you can transfer custom characters from a 3DS to a Wii U. It's not perfect, but it's still something

So, data is not saved? That kinda sucks. Thought the whole point was like how in Skylanders/Infinity it stores data on it, and you can take it to any other unit with the game and use it.

Like you could train your Amiibo in Smash, then if you visit a friend with the game, you put your leveled Amiibo and beat everyone or something.

Still, the figures are nice. Gifted Mario, Villager and Link to a friend on day one. Planning on getting a Wii U, and a few of this one of this days.

Yep, that was what I thought it would be.

I've actually found Amiibo's so far pretty fun as partner characters in Smash, and they're neat collectibles so it's all good. But I am the first to say Nintendo has two problems with their launch:

1. Sakurai believing nobody would be interested in Amiibos in the co-op game modes seems to be way, way off base. Everyone I've seen playing the game is disappointed at this lack.

2. They really should have had the Skylanders-esque game ready to go alongside Smash 4 for Christmas. Their PR remarks about not wanting to use the Amiibo exactly like other Toys to Life products doesn't amount to anything. Character action games using figures to spawn players is the backbone of the genre. And the big attraction to buying the toys.

That said, I would be surprised if they don't have such a game in development.

Some of the next wave aren't available on Amazon. Have they temporarily sold out? Or have they never gone up for sale?

Also, I haven't seen Rosalina and Luna on the target site or MetaKnight on BB... Did I miss them, or are they unavailable for preorder?

Id like to order all the characters and don't want to miss any, but it's hard to find them all.

The only thing they'd be useful for is Classic and All-Star. Having them in the Home Run contest and stuff would require a butt load of special programming for some pretty low returns.

And the problem with a Skylanders-esque game is licensing. Getting all the studios to agree on Smash is already hard work.

So is it open world or stages?

And what is the "toolbox" that is always mentioned?

I saw a video of a "spiderman stage" and it looked pretty linear and hold your hand. Looked pretty boring

For Infinity at least, the characters themselves don't give you 'stages' necessarily. Certain 'playsets' have another item that when scanned open up their own dedicated stages. Otherwise the characters themselves just let you play as them in an open 'sandbox' where you can construct your own stuff. That might be what you saw for Spiderman, as what you build yourself might be a little more limited.

Actual mission based worlds/stages are limited to only certain 'playsets' and their characters.

Ahhhh, I want Link, Samus and Pikachu so bad, but I really don't want to open the boxes. I almost feel like I should buy 2, one to open and one to keep sealed.

And are they still selling out places? I'm not gonna get them for a week or so, I hope I don't have trouble finding them.

Nah I know - I own 10 :D and I'm personally content with them.

Yet, I don't think it would have been hard to implement that option with Amiibo's. Play as the figure or use it as a friend. Leveling up to 50 could just be a mark of your playtime/KO's, and kids would love that.

If you cut it carefully on the bottom you can open without damaging the packaging and the way they designed it allows the plastic parts to stay in place as long as you don't cut the top side.

It seems like a few from the following waves are already sold out if they say "sign up for...". Ike, Dedede, Pit, C Falcon, yep.

Hopefully retailers get them in since I'd much rather purchase them in person.

Btw, is Rosalina confirmed Target exclusive?

Oh, nice! Thanks for the heads up!

Someone posted/made a Youtube video too if you wanted to make sure which parts to cut. It was pretty simple if you're careful, Peach was the first one I opened and it was a perfect cut. Pikachu I messed up a little since I was tired.

Just pre-ordered a Zelda amiibo to go along with my Link and Kirby. The next ones I'll get will be Sonic and Wario. I really wanted to buy Villager but it's sold out everywhere.

So me and a friend spent about 4 hours training up a Pikachu and a Yoshi amiibo separately to level 20 and then fighting each other's amiibo to see if there was difference. We then reset and swapped amiibo. We reset again and tried different training methods (only using specials, grabbing, etc.) Our results: there wasn't anything noticeable beyond random noise.

Will see what happens when they get to level 50.

I think the scanning process and seeing it "come alive" in the game is quite fun with amiibo. Nintendo probably figured that out, too, and that's why I think they are going to make a amiibo centric game that requires figurines. I just hope that it's unique and different to Skylanders and DI to stand out on its own.

Here is a picture of my Yoshi amiibo I got Saturday. I named him Yoshisaur. I actually wanted to use the full Japanese name but that doesn't fit.

Do you have a link to the video?

No, data is saved. The example you use is exactly what happens in that "misleading" video the other guy posted above. It's not misleading. You level your AI buddy at home and take him to a friend's house and beat everyone.

Amiibos level data is not saved to the figure? I had no idea to be honest, what is saved?

- Amiibo custom name (10 characters)
- Color/texture scheme (one of 8)
- Amiibo level (50 maximum)
- Custom moves assigned (3 different possible moves for each of 4 special attacks)
- Modified statistics, attack / defense / speed (changed by feeding them equipment)
- Custom AI playstyle, adapted based on how they were trained

My best buy still doesn't have any Villager Amiibo. I only seen 1 Marth Amiibo at 2 different BB. Fox Amiibo low in stock too. Villager and WiiFit trainer are rare.

We need an Amiibo OT, a lot of people still don't understand how they work.
Myself being one of them. However, I will be picking one up with Captain Toad this Friday...

I would greatly appreciate some kind of FAQ about these things, as Nintendo has done a very poor job at showing me more than a concept...

It wasn't pushed there, Robin64 created it there.

It was during a period where mods were moving a load of stuff from Gaming side into Community side and wanted that sort of thread to be over there, hoping more people would go there. That didn't work at all, surprising nobody.

I really need to update the OP, too, I hadn't bothered for a while due to Gaming side getting all the 20 page amiibo threads instead.

Ah wow. Didn't know. That sort of thread would be useful on gaming side along with the Smash OT at least till that gets moved to community. Amiibo's have only just came out, there is still a lot of questions around them and a thread like that is super useful.
This being the default "OT" for Amiibo is stupid, the mods should just move yours to Gaming for a bit. Community is pretty much an OT graveyard for everything that doesn't have a strong online presence like MMOs or fighting games.

I definitely think it should have had this capability. This is what most people accustomed to Infinity and Skylanders toys will expect. It has even thrown off people in this thread. Personally I have no interest in training some partner AI, and I doubt many people do either. But a customised character that brings my W-L record with me to my friends house? I would be totally into that.
If I was still a child.

Right now there's definitely a usefulness deficit with these things. Link would unlock the Spinner weapon for me in Hyrule Warriors but that makes him a 15 euro piece of DLC, which isn't acceptable to me.

Okay, Gaf, all of your Bioware Choices have come to this moment.

While on my way to the cinema to watch Horrible Bosses 2, I walked into my Smyths store and they have Amiibos behind the counter, including a Marth. Actually, they have them all.

Here are your options:

1) I'm feeling lucky! (Ask for the first Marth they have and accept it.)

2) Show me your wares! (Ask to see all of their Marth Amiibos to compare.)

3) On second thought, what else ya got? (Get a Pikachu one as there is a lower chance of it being bad.)

4) Not today, thanks. (Go home after cinema and never look back.)

You have 2.5 hours.
