Amiibo Discussion Thread

Oh yeah, if you are looking to buy smash brothers on Wii U you can get a free amiibo if you purchase it at toys r us starting today until next sunday.

So I bought the Link Amiibo the other day. I was under the impression that you get to store your level data on to the Amiibo in Smash Bros. That is what Nintendo's video leads you to believe.

The damn Amiibo is like a virtual friend that you fight against. That is crap....

Not exactly sure what else you can even do with these things? Dress up my Mii with clothes representing my Amiibo?

Sure hope Nintendo releases a game built for these damn toys.

Found out this week I have a baby on the way, perfect time to get addicted to collecting amiibo. Compared to games, they are a far more affordable collectable if you are smart and space out your purchases.

I have four so far, excited to get more.

The problem are those ones that you have to buy immediately or face them being sold out!

Right! I already have 2 Marth (one sealed) and planning on picking up Villager and WFT before Wave 2 comes out. With those out of the way I should be comfortable to pick up the rest of wave 1 over time.

I'll be going out and buying 2 on launch day of each wave, maybe getting a 3rd in between. I buy mine at Meijer and with their mperks rewards I'm able to get coupons that allow me to get them at a discount, as low as 3 bucks, every couple weeks.

I am with you on this, this is what is stopping me from buying more than 2/3 Amiibo. If they released a game specifically for them I would buy many more.

The GAME in Churchill Square, Brighton was selling Amiibos for £11.99 rather than £10.99, all they had stocked seemingly was Marth, Fox and Donkey Kong.

I can't imagine Nintendo isn't going to make a game specifically for amiibo at some point. The sooner the better or the game-tie-in novelty will wear off for many.

Same with my local GAME, so I got Samus from Grainger Games for £11. They had pretty much all the characters available from memory.

I also hope they get a game that uses them to a greater extent, but Nintendo has been very clear about what they do in Smash for a while now.

What in the world led you to think you'd be storing level data? I think the onus is on you to understand what you're going to be doing with it before you buy it. There's loads of information online about them.

Alright got some sales data to share:

Figure/WTD/YTD

Mario/1/10
Link/3/18
Yoshi/3/9
Pikachu/1/8
Kirby/2/11
Donkey Kong/1/7
Marth/0/4
Samus/1/5
Peach/1/7
Fox/1/8

Skylanders and Infinity sell about 3x that much each week.

So as far as my store is concerned these are a bust.

Note: sales week does start Saturday or Sunday for us.

Interesting. How many are sitting unsold?

It's clear that the people who purchase Amiibo generally buy multiple ones since they're all around 8-10 LTD other than Link. As expected, a fairly niche product that I love...hopefully retailers are willing to stock more.

We'd need to know how many are left in stock for the numbers to have an impact. I mean if you only ever got 4 Marth in stock, you can't really ask for much more than selling all of them.

Can someone explain the skylanders/disney infinity games to me?

What happens when you scan a toy on those games?

Basically you play as the figure. Each figure is a different character in that game and I guess you need at least one figure to even play the game.

They become playable characters. In Skylanders, at least to my understanding, they all have different powers. You'll have parts of the game where characters with certain powers have advantages over something or other. I've never played it, but from what I understand it offers a lot more of a sandbox for you to play with the figures.

In a nutshell... You play as that character in the game when it's on the portal. If you die you need to put another one on and wait for the dead one to regen. Sometimes they have special elements or abilities to allow you to access different areas of the game.

And one of their Skylanders/Infinity displays for comparison. Yes, one of. There's another too, it's smaller but was crowded so I couldn't really take a pic.

Wish my Toys R Us store looked that good.

So is it open world or stages?

And what is the "toolbox" that is always mentioned?

I saw a video of a "spiderman stage" and it looked pretty linear and hold your hand. Looked pretty boring

Don't own the game but I think it's stages.

Toolbox you can design your own stages/levels with unlocked parts.

So I'm going to punish myself and pick these up over the coming weeks. For Best Buy, will they be getting more stock soon? None of the stores around me have the rarer ones and I figure I should start there first...

Decided to check Smyths Online (UK Toy Shop) to see how stock is at my one down the road:

Fox - In-Stock.
Marth - In-Stock.
Fit Trainer - In-Stock. (ALREADY GOT)
Yoshi - In-Stock.
Mario - In-Stock.
Link - In-Stock.
Pikachu - In-Stock.
Donkey Kong - In-Stock.
Peach - In-Stock.
Kirby - Low-Stock. (ALREADY GOT)
Samus - In-Stock.
Villager - Low-Stock. (ALREADY GOT)

I will get you guys pictures tomorrow of Amiibo and Skylanders on my way to the Cinema.

I really like the quality and look of the amiibo figures. I picked up Yoshi, Link, and Villager so far, but my problem is their game functionality. It really just seemed like they came up with the idea of making these figures, and did not find a good way to integrate them into their games yet. My amiibo that I've been fighting against in Smash Bros really just seem like I'm just amping up the CPU difficulty over time. The leveling up doesn't really happen based on any threshold being reached, but rather just using them. Seems like they level up rather fast too.

I can't say I blame them really for not really finding the right functionality out of the gate. I have always felt like Nintendo has always given good value for their products, so I appreciate that they don't want to strip their games apart by making people buy hundreds of dollars worth of figures just to experience their games completely, like Skylanders and Disney Infinity. The sad truth though, that's what makes those games work too. Nintendo needs to come up with a way with making the integration of the figures work in their games, but not making it feel like their games are being stripped in the process, and that's a hard balance.

I just hope going forward, they figure something out, and even the current amiibo we're buying today may have some cool functionality in an upcoming game.

Only number I remember of total stock is Mario, and he has something like 48 still in the back and 12 or so on the floor. Marth was only 4 total shipped and he went quite fast.

And yeah I realized I forgot WFT and villager they are both sold out however.

My local ZMart store amiibo status:

Yoshi: In stock
Peach: In stock (Few units)
Donkey Kong: In stock (Very few units)
Fox: Sold out (Restocking soon)
Kirby: In stock
Link: In stock
Mario: Sold out (Restocking soon)
Marth: Sold out (Restocking soon)
Pikachu: In stock
Samus: In stock
Villager: Sold out (Restocking soon)
Wii Fit Trainer: In stock (Very few units)

The guy at the store told me these are selling real fast, with Link and Samus being the more popular ones, so they are constantly restocking those.

I think amiibo might be something big for Nintendo. Assuming they keep pumping out new figures constantly they could make a huge profit out of this.

60 Mario to 4 Marth? Jesus that's some uneven shipment.

My local mall EB Games only received 6 Amiibo; Mario, Link, Samus, Kirby, Pikachu and WFT.

I was at a GameStop today and the cashier pretty much said "I don't have a Wii U but..." And pretty much described what you said about storing level data.

Nintendo has got to do a better job at communication with their sellers.

I'm pretty torn on how far I want Nintendo to go with these things. At first, I was happy that they weren't going to be terribly useful. I don't really want content locked behind another purchase. But now that I own a few, I find myself hoping that they'll be used more substantially in the future, haha.

There is a video Nintendo put out showing some kid sucking at Smash Bros. He goes home and buys the Mario Amiibo and comes back. Games shows he is level 50 and everyone says "someone has been practicing".

I also mentioned that in my previous post. So that is what led me to believe it stores your level data..

Here is the very misleading video

How is that video misleading? I mean, the kid even says: "They fight with you as he was reading the back of the package of the amiibo."

After checking out this thread, I thought the Link amiibo might make a good holiday gift for one of my friends. I checked a Target and a Gamestop while shopping this weekend and neither had him. :( and he's not on Amazon anymore either.

Also now I want Kirby for myself.

The video is misleading. Deny it all you want. They purposely make it look like you are these characters. At no point does the commercial show that it is a virtual fighter controlled by the cpu.

And it is very easy to judge the commercial differently when you already know what the Amiibo is used for in Smash Bros. I watched this commercial knowing nothing about the Amiibo.

Either way, it is pretty damn useless. Unless you are some weird kid with no friends.

That video is not misleading. They explain that they fight with you in it, and show multiple times that they touch the amiibo and it joins the game as their teammate. It spends most of the video talking about your amiibo being a training partner.

Misunderstanding something doesn't inherently make it misleading. There is a wealth of amiibo information online that detailed what they do. The packaging of the product details what they do. You misunderstood the information.

What do you think "they fight with you" means? If everyone else except for you seems to understand the video clearly, the onus is on you. There was also this video which was pretty damn clear about how things work.

Judging by the bolded you aren't going to last very long around GAF anyway so I'm not sure why I bothered replying.

Sheik, Sonic and Bowser are up for preorder for Canadians at Amazon.ca

Bowser looks...a little strange from the pic, but they made his skin textured which is nice.

I'm not sold on Sheik or Sonic either.

I'm most excited about Toon Link, Dedede, Megaman and Ike though.

My Amiibo is only level 24 and he beats me pretty regularly. I feel dirty.

I can't even beat my PIkachu anymore lol

Level 28.
