Amplitude (Harmonix) PS3/PS4 - KS (Funded, final day)

I have to prove to Sony that I want games? By paying to have them make them? So I can then go pay again once it's made? I refuse to take part in this kickstarter culture. Get some fucking money together, take a risk, make something, and put it up for sale. If it's good and people want it, you will get a return. I can't believe how many people just throw money at ideas these days.
Yes. In fact, all Sony first and second party games should be on Kickstarter. The idea that the platform holder has to fund games for their console is a very outdated one when the console owners can do a much better job in selecting what needs to exist and what doesn't. That's the reason the PS4 is $399 and Sony is not releasing any games for it since launch creating the infamous meme. Your time has come to invest the $100 you saved over buying a Xbox One into games you want to see on your console. If you prefer an outdated business model I guess you should switch to the green camp...

I don't understand why they need the Amplitude IP for this. Can't they just call it Wavelength or something? People will know what it means.

Although the biggest problem for me is that current and previous generation controllers aren't going to be very good for this - you really need the three digital shoulder buttons the PS2 controller had.

Frequency, Amplitude, Wavelength (could call it Lambda as well)....would be pretty cool

Just to make sure I understand this correctly: http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/05/05/amplitude-reboot-announced-for-playstation-4-ps3

1.) This is Sony's IP, so it's exclusive to Sony platforms.

2.) Sony isn't funding it.

3.) Despite having a multi hundred million dollar payout from Viacom and multiple venture capitalists/angel investors backing them over time, they need to do a kickstarter for $775,000 to fund a game in an IP they don't own that the IP owner refuses to fund themselves.

This is... one of the odder kickstarters I've seen I've got to be honest.

Only 18 days on this KS too?

This sounds less like a real KS and more like an elaborate marketing scheme.

Backed it because i get the game cheaper.

Somehow I believe its so short, cause then Sony still can put it in their E3 presentation and make some fuzz about Harmonix making a ps exclusive

Seeing a shorter project will be interesting. I think it's smart. It gives people more of a sense of urgency to back the project. It's probably easier to plan out an update/media strategy over a short period of time as well.

I do think they goofed on the early bird quantity. Let's see if they can hit $200K today.

I think when this reaches a good amount of $$$ and shows that people are interested (half the money?), Sony is going to fill the rest.

The kickstarter is probably just to judge interest in a new amplitude, not to fund the entire project.

And the only way to say "yes, please" is to pledge ...

It's a safe kickstarter for the backers as this is a well known studio and it's a safer project for the studio as they can prove that the game will sell.

Harmonix, give me more music games and I will justify anything you do ;)

This is kind of up there with the Oculus sale to Facebook outrage from backers. I really don't think you understand what Kickstarter is. For $20 minimum now, you get the game when it is released. Essentially, you are paying them to make the game and they are giving you it free in return.

775K seems like a hell of a lot for this game. Maybe that's just me though

We don't know how licensing works as well as how big the game will actually be. Also, 10 people working at say $60k a year is already $600k of the goal.

I love Amplitude and Frequency (still have extra sealed copies of both for some bizarre reason) but don't think I'll jump in on this.

Feels weird somehow.

A Playstation-exclusive Kickstarter, it's not every day you see one of those out in the wild.

Never played Amplitude, though I remember when it came out. Good luck to the team, their pricey goal and the short time to reach it in smacks of flagrant optimism, but you never know. It's got off to a good start at the very least.

40k in less than an hour is pretty impressive. Not sure why people are thinking they're not gonna make it. Giant Bomb hasn't even started pimping this yet haha

This is ridiculous. I love the game but being as the IP belongs to sony, and considering harmonix's position, can they really not convince sony to invest in it. also why does this cost so much? it doesn't have licensed music and its only targeting two platforms ( which would be pretty easy to get running on both if they using a cross platform engine like phyre, UE3, unity or something ). They arent even showing off a prototype. I want it gaf, but this just feels wrong :/

According to John Drake (on the length of the kickstarter):

"We need to make sure the game is a go so we can allocate developers to it. That date/time makes the most sense for us in terms of making sure we can put people in the right places."

The initial launch and closing always bring bumps to funding, whether they can maintain that in the upcoming weeks is what will determine if its successful. Considering that they only have 18 days than the usual 30 days, Harmonix has a lot of work ahead

Erm Sony WTF.
I thought you were all about the gamers and indies n shit?

Either way, I'm a winner as I've backed $40. I love Amplitude so much it hurts.

I even loved Rock Band Blitz, like a child that isn't mine.

I think this might be a way solely to get people talking, unrealistic goal in short amount of time, from an IP owned by Sony, PS xclusive seems like something almost destined to fail BUT it will get people talking and is perfect way to get people interested. Basically a survey with much more reliable info.

What's up with all the backlash. Sony owns the IP, what exactly did you guys expect Harmonix to do?

Why not just give it a new name and say it's the spiritual successor...? A name is only a name, and it's not exactly a huge one that's worth keeping over other platform sales.

The Dance Central series has probably sold 5+ million copies at this stage and they had the money to out source a FPS game to Hidden Path, I'm sure Harmonix are doing quite well for themselves.
Even if they have a million or more dollars doesn't mean they can just throw that kind of money around if they are not certain that the Amplitude fanbase is still there and willing to buy the game. And no matter if Dance Central has sold well, how much of that money goes to Harmonix and how much to Microsoft/MTV, the publishers of the game? Knowing the game industry, they probably only get a fraction of the profits.

If they were doing that they would have made that known in the pitch, there's no reason to withhold that kind of information.
Well, devs often forget to tell/don't think of providing some key information in their initial pitches.

This whole deal just comes off as a cash grab, why invest your own money when you can take a guaranteed preorder a year in advance.
I don't really see how it is a cash grab, seems like the usual kind of negative nancy Kickstarter bitching. They are not going to keep that money, all of it goes to developing the game. If there's not enough interest to fund the project, no one gets any money and the game will possibly not be made in any form. Everybody loses.

Because the don't want to compromise they're vision of what they want to do?

They expect Sony to fund this outright. I'm mixed about it but a Kickstarter really doesn't hurt anything.

You have to see if there is an audience for this game. What if Sony did invest in this and it didn't make anything. It would be a waste and Sony would never probably do such a thing again. If this gets funded those who bought it will get a free copy of the game

If it doesn't get funded. No money is lost and clearly there wasn't enough interest to begin with.

18 days seems too short, hopefully they'll make it.

Won't quote everyone asking about 18, but according to Drake, its to decide whether or not to dedicate resources to it. Source: http://www.giantbomb.com/articles/harmonix-kickstarting-a-new-amplitude-game/1100-4910/

"If you're wondering why the campaign has only 18 days, as opposed to the typical 30-day run for Kickstarters, Harmonix's John Drake explained: "We need to make sure the game is a go so we can allocate developers to it. That date/time makes the most sense for us in terms of making sure we can put people in the right places.""

I think they would've liked a spiritual successor so that it could be on more platforms. Speaking for myself, that's certainly what I would prefer - you can bring back a game people love to an even wider audience.

But why are people expecting Sony to fund it just because it's PS exclusive? That makes no sense

Sure, but that's not what Harmonix wants. Why ask them to compromise their vision?

Amplitude was a really fun, addictive PS2 game with an eclectic soundtrack. (You're Super-Sprøde, that is what you are....)

750k isn't that much for a multiplatform HD-level game that needs to have dozens of licenced tracks, especially when you make it as well as Harmonix does (lots of music games have been made for less, but they end up playing a lot worse than Harmonix's games as well).

But why are people expecting Sony to fund it just because it's PS exclusive? That makes no sense

That's a good question. Here's another question: is there any proof that Sony hasn't committed funds to this? Do we know how much an HD Amplitude would cost? Perhaps $775k isn't the total actual cost.

I believe that Kickstarter has been used as a way of gauging interest in a product.

This I all a marketing scheme, this gets kick started and sony comes in at the end saying they are for the gamers and boom this game gets made.

This is fantastic! I will be backing this! Amplitude (and Frequency) was absolutely amazing. I played that so much that I wore out a fairly new controller...
