Universal broadband penetration in the US would require a massive works program the likes of which this country hasn't seen since we built the highway system in the 1950s. Given this country's broken, polarized, and corporatized political system there's no way Congress reaches a consensus to make this happen anytime soon. And there's no profit for private corps to make it happen. I'd say barring a political miracle the dream of all digital delivery and thin clients will remain a dream for the next decade at least.
