is a there a list of ps3 controller compatible games? this is so much better than using the touch screen on my transformer prime + galaxy s3.

Star Traders RPG has turned me into a convert. It looks scary at first glance with all the menus and options but it's not as overwhelming as it may seem. Just go with the default start settings and start playing, the game's pretty good about telling you what every action does directly and indirectly (e.g. what may anger factions). Also it's a perfect game for any coffee break since it has practically no load times and is completely turn based, you can pull it up, start playing and drop it or get distracted without any issues.

Is anyone else here from Canada? I ask because I really want to download both Dead Trigger and The Amazing Spiderman, and neither one is available to me. I'm just wondering if it's a country thing or a device thing (I have an Xperia Play)...

Spiderman and Dead Trigger are both available to me. I'm in Toronto.

As the developers explained it to me, the Adreno 205 GPU's that the Xperia Play uses has a bug which isn't playing nice with Dead Trigger.

I have the HTC Thunderbolt which uses the same GPU. The game was available to me at first, but was quickly made incompatible with my phone.

As for Spiderman, no idea.

I can access them both (I use a Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 Plus).

Is there any way to browse Play by release date? The top paid/top free format sucks.

Any info on Chaos Rings II? A spectacular jRPG by Square-Enix, currently only available in English on iOS and Japanese on Android Japan.

This is a great game, supposedly.
considering how long it's been since release, i doubt SE is going to release it normally through Android which is a shame but there's a little hope since FF3 was recently released and looking like it's doing great.

Is Dead Trigger actually worth buying? Yeah, it's cheap, but I would rather not buy crappy games even if they don't cost me much. I have Shadowgun, and found it somewhat enjoyable (worth the very low price I bought it at when it was on sale, for sure).

Has anyone here tried The King of Fighters Android (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ggee.vividruntime.gg_1403)? How playable is the game without a physical controller?

If you go here you can download a trial version of The King of Fighters that let's you play for 2 minutes.

"But you can't do anything in 2 minutes!" Technically that's true. However, any changes you do in-game are saved. This means: you can play the game repeatedly in 2-minute intervals and any settings you change will remain saved. It's enough to get a good feel of the controls and mechanics IMO. Again, I know it's annoying but it's better than nothing.

After toying with it for a while I decided to pull the trigger and get it for my Xperia Play.

The game itself is fun. However, I take issue with paid apps that have in-app purchases. A lot of the guns can only be unlocked by purchasing their currency with real money. Same with things like additional gun slots, items, etc.

They need to make it freemium and have a premium edition for those who would rather pay a set price.

its generic and pretty basic but it is a fun game! its cheap so its worth getting!

Looks fun as hell. Just waiting on a fix now because it gets to the launch screen on my phone and then freezes. Samsung Galaxy S Fascinate.

Okay, it was just really slow to start up.

I really appreciate that $1 is all it takes. Ski Safari, to my knowledge, contains no microtransactions.
It just lets you focus on having a great time. The progression is all player-earned via little challenges that you'll complete as you play.

I'm one of those fans. I can cosign on this comment.

Ditto, although much like all 'match 3' games, my wife beats my best score by miles making me never want to play the games again.

I'll never forget seeing a quiz machine in our local pub that had Bejewelled on it. Ee got excited about potentially winning money ononly to find it was just a 'play for fun' game.

ZooKeeper is the best Bejeweled clone I've played on Android and it's only a dollar, I highly recommend it

TripleTown is fun too, although it's fairly different than the typical match 3 game. Also be warned that if you get hooked you'll either have to wait hours/days for your turns to recharge or pay ~$4 (maybe $3.50? Can't remember) for the unlimited turns and the extra levels. It's kind of a dirty tactic as far as F2P goes.

TripleTown is hampered by such bullshit. I tweeted the developer and they acted like they weren't hiding the micro-transactions away.

The turns counter is not explained in the tutorial or even referenced. It's bullshit and SpryFox should at least acknowledge or explain it. Their refusal to at least say, "Hey, sorry, we didn't mean to mislead you," would've been nice. It's a shame because the game itself is great when you don't have to worry about spending money.

Might've changed since then, but that singular experience soured me on even trying further SpryFox games. Are there going to be predatory micro-transactions tucked away in secret in those too?

Maybe I'm crazy (I like paying money for things, I even like certain instances of F2P, like Blacklight: Retribution's model) but I've never been so infuriated before when playing a mobile game. I enjoyed it so much but that just turned me off so fast and then I felt like the developer was throwing salt in my eye when I asked them about it.

Here's the conversation:

Me: @spryfox Love ‪#TripleTown‬ on Android, but I feel hiding the real cost of your game is low. I would've paid if you'd just charged upfront.

Them: We're not trying to hide the cost -- we're trying to make the game free. You never *have* to pay if you wait for turns.

Me: @spryfox Tutorial made no mention of turns. UI made me think the turn counter was item stock. Still a fantastic game, but I'm disappointed.
They didn't respond after that.

I remember playing it on the DS 7 years ago. It was a good puzzle game even for "full" price

Any MP cross-platform Android/iOS game recommendations, GAF?

(Other than Dungeon Defenders, please.)

pocket legends, star legends, space: uncharted, dark legends

edit: Order & Chaos Online....this one wont run on my droid1 but my galaxy s3 should be here this week and I cant wait to try this.

Of all the Freemium / F2P models out there I prefer this one. You get to play it for as long as you like (albeit slowly eventually) for free. Or you can pay a one-off $4 to buy the game. It was pretty clear to me that's how it worked, too. There was always that option to pay $4 to buy infinite turns, right from the start...

I disagree that it's the best way to do F2P. The free version of Triple Town is a glorified demo - the amount of time you can play it is intentionally limited and you don't have access to any of the other boards besides the main one. And I feel like saying you can play "as long as you like" isn't exactly true because if a player hits the turn limit, chances are they want to play the game longer than the turn limit allows.

The way F2P should work is to make the full game available to the player for free but provide bonuses for people who want to pay. In the case of a single player game (multiplayer is different, but we won't get into that here), an example of an F2P format that works is Temple Run: you can play the full game as much as you want, and all of the upgrades/bonuses are available to free users but take an intentionally long time to unlock - purchasing gold lets you get them right away. Air Penguin is another example, where the entire game is free, but it takes some effort to collect the fish required for bonus characters and mid-level retries. The option to buy fish with real money is always there, however.

This format could work for TripleTown too - give the player unlimited turns for free and make the extra boards unlockables for hitting certain score thresholds (also giving them real cash values). Give important store items like robots and crystals intentionally high gold prices to encourage the player to buy coins with cash, but they can still earn enough coins to get them for free if they play enough. In other words, the full game is still available to the player for free if they want to go that route.

I don't like the limited turns concept, but you are correct that the counter is always on the screen so it's not like they hide it. It still rubs me the wrong way. And I still think that advertising a game as free and then restricting a significant amount of gameplay content to paying users only is a little shady.

Also, don't get me wrong, I think TripleTown is a great game. I just don't like its F2P format.

Yeah, I saw Final Fantasy III on the droid and it amazed me, way better than my DS version, way crisper.

Hopefully this will motivate a few people up in the suit department at S-E.

That may be more like the standard F2P way but I'd rather see more demo/full version splits instead of "buy points with real money!". The demo/full split allows making the gameplay without having to limit it for some business model while "buy money" requires making earning the money unattractive for players. Also it generates uncertainty about how you're meant to experience the game.

Even with touch controls, Dead Trigger is a very fun game. The thing that the trailer doesn't show you is that you don't just stand there and shoot. The reason why is you'll fucking die if you don't move and things just get more hectic the further you go into the game. It makes the experience better and a little more tense. Also, I love being able to pull off head shots in this game.

I really need to invest in an USB OTG cable (which are like $2 on amazon) so I can play this TPS/FPS easily. Does Gameloft provide the same support of gamepads for their shooters? Also, I was able to map the my PS3 controller to the my HP touchpad for Shadowgun and it works pretty well, but hooking the PS3 controller up directly would definitely give me a better response.

So I just received my iControlPad. I'll give it a small review.

I'm pretty impressed with it so far.

The actual build of the pad seems sturdy and is very comfortable to hold, in most situations. It feels like a retro console's controller in your hands, which adds to its charm while playing emulated games. The rubber sides help with the comfort. It's the perfect weight compared to retro controllers as well, further helping that feeling along. Playing Mario on the Super Nintendo with this is lovely. The d-pad feels great, even better than the original SNES one. The buttons are quite nice as well.

It's an excellent pad for emulators whether they be on your phone or on your PC. I have tried it with both and I got it to pair over bluetooth and function without any issues at all, it was fast and painless.

Further more, I got it to work with some standard Android games too, Shadowgun even detected the pad on boot and told me to go to the options to set it up which was great. Unfortunately I didn't have as smooth a time with other games that support a gamepad, however this could be due to the mode I paired it as with my phone. I had it set to standard HID Game Controller mode, but there are others, like HID keyboard mode, SPP mode (Whatever that is), HID Keyboard and mouse mode, etc. There is a lot to play with here. When in HID Game Controller mode, Windows detected it as a standard game controller which is great.

Looking at the above image, you can probably guess one of the biggest issues with this pad, that being the L and R buttons, and they are the reason why I said it was comfortable to hold "in most situations". I thought it would be easier to use them, but it's pretty tough, unfortunately. Maybe I just need to get used to them, I really haven't put enough time in with this controller yet to say. Never mind, I understand why they had to be on the back, if you mount a phone to the controller itself it would block the buttons.

Something else which isn't quite as obvious though is the analogue slide pads. They are nothing like the 3DS's slidepads, as they lack the travel that one has. They are vastly better than the PSP's slide pad. Not as good as the 3DS's slide pad. Shadowgun was a bit tricky with them, but again with time I'm sure I will grow accustomed to them. They aren't bad, but I am happy they are there. I hope more games start supporting them. One thing to note though, they spin. I know some people hate this, so it's worth mentioning.

Overall I'm pretty happy. I think there is room for improvement, but not a lot. I know I'm going to use this thing so damn much.

Edit: I should mention I was using it with a Samsung Galaxy Note with Android 4.03 stock.

Alright, so I have been playing Secret of Mana all day with this iControlPad, and it's just brilliant. Very very happy I spent the money on it. I wasn't 100% happy before, but now I'm just all over it. Chrono Trigger next!
