Android Gaming Thread New OP

Probably means it has some sort of image scaling applied to it. Might take away the crispness of the original spritework since it has to be displayed at such a high resolution on a handset screen.

OK thanks for the response. I thought it meant something like HD features or something along those lines.

Need for speed looks amazing and what a shame I'm $0.11 from picking up that Blazing Star. =D

Hi, it's not a game yet, not even a playable demo, but today I put together a quick Nexus 7 graphical test for a potential future game... (Also posted in the indie dev thread - check that out, it's good fun in there!)

Click for video...

It's perfectly smooth running on the device, I think some juddering was introduced from iPad->VirtualDub->Youtube!

But yeah, well pleased with this. And impressed with the Nexus!

super random but I just got the EA version of Tetris and im actually surprised at how well it controls with a touchscreen

Out of all the touch games I've tried I think Ski Safari is my favorite. It's a perfect mix of simple control, cool music and fun objectives.

yes sir.
and it looks like the makers are still and will be involved with this game for a bit, last update was really nice.

There's the new arrivals lists but if it's not on there you're screwed. The play store is doing a pretty good job keeping you from seeing what it has to offer.

Through Google Play is there a way to search by release date - to find new games etc.?

Not really, unfortunately. The only real option to look through recent games is to look at the "Top New Free" and "Top New Paid" categories, but Google's definition of "New" seems to be anything released in the past two months and there's no way to sort by date, only popularity.

I don't understand why Android gaming is such an absolutely incredible fail when compared to iOS... the amount of Android devices out there right now surely competes with the number of iOS devices right? And even on here, I'd have thought many of us have Android devices yet over the weekend this thread had 3 posts... the iOS thread had around 12 pages!

Wake the fuck up Android GAF!

Developers are generally put off by Android's incredible amounts of piracy and the huge fragmentation in specs.

Fair points, it's disappointing that's the case but it does make sense the Android market is fragmented.

What doesn't make sense however, is in the past month or so we've had:

  • Rayman Jungle Run
  • Bad Piggies
  • Plague Inc
  • Devil's Attorney
  • Funky Smugglers
  • Blood & Glory
  • Granny Smith
  • Chrono Trigger
  • Beastie Bay
  • The Bard's Tale

And for the most part, GAF doesn't seem to care. We're all gamers, and lots of people here own Androids. Looking over at the iOS thread makes me glad I've still got my iPad though.

Unfortunately most posts about games tend to end up in the Android OT and not here. Or in the App thread, the S3 thread, the Nexus 7 thread or.... damn we even have fragmentation in our threads :(

Yeah that's not cool - would be better to have game chat here, app chat in the app thread, and then just discussion relating to those devices in their own theads I guess... but easier said than done

I think it's inevitable. People with their new device post in that thread and ask for games/apps recommendations.

Wake the fuck up Android GAF!

I'll champion that cause - it saddens me when I don't see this thread on the main page.

I'll begin with a bit of main-stream; new Angry Birds Star Wars gameplay trailer:

*Edit* I think the thread title could use a refresh, it's by no means the sole cause of the thread inactivity but an update may spark interest.

Yeah, I dunno. Android gaming definitely isn't on the same level as iOS, but it's gotten a hell of a lot better in the past year or two. Companies are actually releasing iOS games on Android either the same time or only a few weeks later, which is great. But I think the big problems are 1) piracy, which Google has said they'll address with newer versions of Android and 2) the fact that programming games natively in Java (which Android is based on) is a huge pain in the ass - thankfully there's game engines like Unity now that make it easy to port stuff to Android without having to start from scratch.

I should check the general Android OT. I wish this thread didn't go at a glacial pace.

e: And yeah, I agree the OP should be updated but Menelaus is banned and I have no idea when he's coming back. I almost wonder if it would be better to just make a new thread altogether.

The information in the OP is a little sparse; it's great that there's information about GAF-developed games but it could do with regular updates about newly released games, popular Android game websites etc.

Is anyone interested in collaborating to update/create a new one?

It would help if google launched a GameCenter equivalent.

edit: apparently they are, hurry the hell up!
Yeah, I wish they would hurry up with this. Third party leaderboard software on Android sucks now that GREE bought and killed OpenFeint.

The whole reason Super Hexagon isn't on Android yet (and might not be for months) is because Terry Cavanagh couldn't find leaderboard software that worked with Adobe Air.

Definitely needs to be addressed, I used Gamecenter on my iPhone 3GS quite a bit. Would also need to be able to backup game saves automatically.

Antibody Boost is now out and free on the Google Play store. Made by fellow gaffer Paz and a mate.

"Antibody Boost is an intense microbe shooter.
Take control of a heroic antibody and engage swarms of dangerous antigens.
In this arcade style shooter use precision shots and time your movements carefully to survive the escalating waves.
Improve your reflexes and master your nerves to climb the online leaderboard."

I vote we do a new thread.
We might not move fast enough for a monthly, but maybe a quarterly thread?

This looks absolutely incredible! Still haven't played Angry Birds Space so need to get on that asap.

With regards to this thread, I think the guy that created this one did a great job, in particular with the OP, but if a monthly/quarterly thread is going to help encourage discussion then I'm all for it.

I only got into Android gaming this year but I do agree the thread does move slow. It really picked up during the $0.25. Maybe we could convince Google to do a Neogaf Android sale to help us out. :-)

The Star Wars Angry Birds looks pretty neat. I'll be checking it out on the 8th. The Antibody game is a pretty darn good game.

Can someone please explain to me what the point is of a game like Coin Dozer? I thought things such as Tiny Tower and Pocket Planes were inane time wasters devoid of any sort of skill, but this takes that to a whole new level!

It's like a slot machine. The player is rewarded with "prizes".

22 Cans (Peter Molyneux & co.) Curiosity experiment is approaching the end it would seem from their latest twitter update:

Just landed after not being on curiosity for 4h there are only 26m cubes on face 1 left !! Aghast

For those unaware, here are a couple of links about the app: 22 Cans, Curiosity - What's inside the cube

*Edit* I'm mistaken - IGN's update approximates that it'll take 93 years to reach the centre.

According to a guy in the Curiosity thread, who checked out the game files, there are only 5 layers to the cube. If that's true, it will only take a few weeks...

I played that for a bit on the iPod because I always saw these machines at the fairground and was wondering how exactly they screw you out of your money. No idea if Coin Dozer's answer (gaps to the side that allow coins to fall off the board without being given to you) is accurate but it certainly manages to drive the point home that it's the usual gambling odds.

New Humble Android Bundle!

http://www.humblebundle.com/

Includes Sword and Sworcery, Waking Mars, Eufloria, Crayon Physics, Splice and Machinarium (if you beat the average)

Surprised Sworcery is on there, I thought they said they had no desire to make an Android version.

But slot machines have actual real prizes. This has virtual toy plastic cars.
I think it's just more about the mentality of each time you drop a coin/pull a slot machine lever, there's that chance you win something. Tangible or not, it's a gamble that can be addicting. Nearly all video games have virtual prizes/rewards.

Thanks! Bought. Yeah, pretty sure that "No android version - ever" was what they said.
Yep. Turned me off playing their game at all when I read that. It's not on their website any more, of course, but the wayback machine should be able to find it.

Edit: here's a clear statement from March this year.

I guess having to deal with the different iOS form factors has finally hit them with the reality stick.

Can I buy those games for my phone if it's at&t? I know before you couldn't buy apps from amazon so I'd like to know.

diggin angry birds but gta3 was just a mess to control. I want phone games
