Android Gaming Thread New OP

Coin dozer does freemium fairly well. Your coins replenish at a rate of about one every 6 minutes when you're not playing, and one every 30 seconds or so while you are. I think if you had unlimited coins, it'd get boring pretty quickly, so it's a good way to pace yourself. Fun game, too.

I'm tempted to root my Nexus 7 for sixaxis support. The app looks smart enough to not care whether games or emulators have native gamepad support and is fully customisable.

Anyone here given a go? If you can ditch the touchscreen controls a lot of games might actually be fun to play. (touchscreen GTA lol)

It works great. I highly recommend it. And yeah, even if there's no controller option you can take a screenshot, go into the sixaxis app, and use the image to tell it where the on screen controls are and map them to the controller.
 
I have a question about gamepad support. I know a few games have support natively, but do most emulators have native gamepad support too? I have a PS3 controller I want to use and plan on purchasing a Nexus 7 very soon...

I haven't used any emulators that didn't have support for my PS3 controller (wired).
 
Are there similar apps on Android to e.g. Appshopper on iOS, where you can make a wishlist and they inform you of sales? Or does the playstore wishlist itself do that too?

Thanks guys! I only buy games on sale on iOS (and already have too many), so I'm planning on doing mostly that on Android too :) Do games go on sale as often as iOS here too? Just got my tablet...


On that notes, which games REALLY profit from a big screen? I got Elder Sign Omens (because I LOVE boardgames) and Vice City (because it's friggin Vice City), as well as some free ones like Dead Trigger and Shadowgrounds, Plague Inc, Heroes Call and Battleloot adventure that I already knew from iOS.

I'm looking for
a) games that profit from big screen (got a nexus 7 newly wohoo)
b) boardgames
c) strategy/TBS
d) anything great :)

^ Would be curious myself, I'm quite new as well and have a nice big screen. Dead trigger looks great (free), played one level...I fired up Angry Birds Star Wars just now as well and it actually looks decent but mainly the special world (tatooine iirc) which you have to either buy at $1.99 or unlock by 3-starring all the levels (really nice background work).

Luckily I had the first android bundle to check out some games straight away, also bought Jet Car Stunts, Eufloria HD (couldn't wait for the Vita version any more) and Blazing Star but haven't played them properly yet (just launched to test).

Also downloaded the amazon app for their free game of the day thing - although I'm not 100% about the selection.

Think I will pick up Ihateyouchris's game or his new one in a bit.

I'm not sure since I don't have a tablet, but I've been playing Oscura lately. It's a platformer, quite beautiful on my S3, and I'm sure it would look awesome on the Nexus 7. Some others could help you out more. I'm not a huge smartphone game player, but I definitely enjoy one every once in a while.

I only bought the 2nd android bundle, if I'd known I was gonna get an Android device I would've bought more... lol

Does look good, will add it to my list, thanks.

Also - pew pew (free or version 2 is paid) is a (good - pretty sure, only played it briefly) geometry wars type of game (looks similar too) and looks good imo. - Especially if the colour black is very dark on your screen.

Good. There was a 10th anniversary sale of GTA 3 and Chinatown Wars for the mobile platforms a month or two ago. I really hope Chinatown Wars comes to Android. My last gaming handheld was the original Game Boy (still works!) and I'd like to play it.
 
Freemium games I flat out avoid (Sorry SuperPac). If a game is showing up as 'FREE' or 'INSTALL' in Google Play? I skip it. I'd rather pay for a good game without IAP bullshit than deal with the ads or 'Buy more credits!' crap.

Mobile gaming is going to be doomed if this keeps up....sooner than later.

I also shy away from those games, but I'll give them a go if I hear good things. I've played a lot of Jetpack Joyride without feeling like I need to keep feeding it money or wait around for the next thing to do.

Jetpack Joyride was fine. You're able to complete all of the achievements without pouring any money into it. Awesome game :D
 
As a bit of a test of what I could get done I have just made a simple match-3 game and put it on the Play store: match 3



It's free :-)

The basic gameplay took me about an hour tops to implement. The designs for the tiles took about the same time (many iterations ;-). The resolution independence took about an hour to figure out. An hour or so fiddling with layout. A small amount of time getting the holo light styling right (I'm not using any standard Android toolkit stuff.) And a few UI dead ends that were tried and removed.

I'd like to have some feedback mechanisms (group matching, invalid moves, etc.) but those will probably be more trouble than it's worth without rewriting in another toolkit (the toolkit I'm using is based on SDL so there's no fancy transformations available and no OpenGL yet.)

I've tested it on about a half-dozen phones incliding ldpi right through to xhdpi and 320x200 screens through to 720p tablets (I don't have anything higher-resolution than that available, sadly.)
 
For anyone who'd like a simple but nice puzzle game I'd recommend Flow Free. The concept is very basic, you just make connections between dots of the same color and try to fill the board without any connections crossing each other. It's probably not a game for everyone, but I'm really enjoying it. I find it to be a relaxing game to pull out every now and then and play a few boards (or many - I have a really hard time stopping once I get into the "flow" of clearing board after board).

They have a new game called flow free bridges which adds an extra mechanic (although I haven't tried it yet). Also free.

Quite a similar game (to the original) and with slightly nicer presentation and pretty awesome mechanics is HueBrix. Played the free version and bought for the extra levels soon after (lots of levels..but I knew I wanted it).

Death Worm is awesome as expected. Eufloria is great so far. I was hoping Boost 2 was less laggy than on my iPhone 4 - it's not really laggy at all but going over a boost causes a tiny slowdown and I wanted perfection, or the original ;) - 2 is still a great game, bought of course. Xelorians is an awesome shootemup (lite version available) and it works with the pen on note 2! - all shmups should do this. Finger takes too much space and it's just easier with the pen.

Not a game but Adobe Sketchbook which is half price atm is great as well. (drawing app) - layers/brushes/opacity - all the things the regular paint park on vita doesn't have :) - not yet for EU anyway.

I tried Spell Sword but didn't like the controls (even the pro controls option felt uncomfortable/not optimal)....should I re-download it and stick with it?

Edit - Mostly just waiting on Minigore to land on Android (not that dodgy beta version floating around that accesses your contacts) - don't like guerilla bob as much. And an official tilt to live - think there is a similar game floating around atm though, forgot the name, didn't try it.
And Sonic 4 Episode 2 (demo available) to drop in price - great controls imo.

Yeah, freemium is annoying but I've been able to enjoy a bunch of games like JetPack Joyride, Temple Run, and Major Mayhem without paying a dime. And while ZooKeeper Battle's freemium format is annoying, I've still been playing the game a ton even with the 6 minute recharge period.

What really bothers me is shit like Deathdome, where the entire game is balanced with IAP weapons in mind so if you try to play it without buying anything it's basically unplayable up to a certain point.

Looks nice too, downloaded the free version. I really find these simple but addictive puzzle games to be perfect for the smartphone format.
 
I recently tried Super Monsters Ate My Condo, since people here seem to like it, but man does that game have bad performance. Sure, the GNex isn't the most powerful phone out there by any means, but I've played far more advanced 3D games on it with far better performance. SMAMC will run fine for a few seconds, and then the whole thing will just slow down and start lagging like crazy (including the audio, which makes it sound terrible) for a while. It basically becomes unplayable. Then it will run fine again for a few seconds, etc, etc. Ugh.

That's weird, because it runs like a baus on my Galaxy S (yes, the first one).
 
Also experienced a little bit of lag in SMAMC on my S3. Haven't really tried it after to see if it was just a RAM issue, but the game was really fun.
 
Super MMAC runs like crap on my Optimus Elite (even though it is listed as "compatible"). uninstalled it. too bad, seemed like an amusing game.
 
Tried about 4-5 levels/playthroughs now on Note 2 - works well (Super MMAC) - no slowdown at all.

...that was in power saving mode too! (limits cpu - not sure about in-game, but I'm guessing yes as in other games I've had to turn it off to speed it up).

Fun game as well.

It does use up 7-8% of the CPU while in the background though (pressing home button while in-game).

edit - up to 15-16% now - dropping battery too fast, at least it exits properly when pressing back at the menu.

Are you using the custom kernel to speed it up to 1.6 Ghz? It won't matter for Super MAMC but it will make a big difference in other games.

i actually just rooted today for the first time, so yep.

havent tried Super MMAC since root though, but if it doesnt make a difference i guess i wont bother reinstalling.

It's probably better than it was, but it's still too slow to be enjoyable, at least for me. Rayman, however, became perfectly smooth after.

Thanks for that. I agree, it does work pretty well. Also, it's ridiculously addictive for such a simple game.
