Anyway, I'm wondering when 2.0 is supposed to be out for Android. I think I've decided on my phone upgrade policy. I'm pretty set on Android over iPhone, so I'll get my next handset when 2.0 comes out. I'll look for the best hardware every whole number upgrade to the OS. Make sense? PEACE.

http://www.thestreet.com/story/10605412/1/verizon-to-unveil-motorola-android-phone.html

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Motorola's (MOT Quote) Google (GOOG Quote) Android phone is scheduled for landing at Verizon (VZ Quote) next week.
With hopes they have finally created a blockbuster device to rival Apple's (AAPL Quote) iPhone, Motorola and Verizon are preparing the introduction of the hotly anticipated Google Android phone sometime next week, say three industry analysts who asked not to be named for this story. This revelation follows the recent Federal lab approval of the phone, and it clears the way for Verizon to start selling the phone during the all-important holiday season.

The Motorola Android phone -- nicknamed Sholes and Tao at various points in its development -- will include a big touchscreen, slide-out keyboard, assisted-GPS and WiFi, according to documents filed with the Federal Communications Commission.
Verizon is looking for a strong Christmas performance from Motorola's Android phone as well as big numbers from Research In Motion's (RIMM Quote) BlackBerries. The Motorola Android and the second version of the BlackBerry Storm are expected to be Verizon's prime focus at the high end of its smartphone offerings.
Verizon representatives did not reply when asked for comments on this story. A Motorola representative declined to comment but added that the company has previously said it would make an announcement in the coming weeks.
Given the two new offerings ahead, and the lackluster demand for Palm's (PALM Quote) Pre phone, Verizon has decided to limit its support for the Pre phone, which was expected to be available in January as TheStreet reported last week.

Verizon's new Google phone debut would come just weeks after Deutsche Telekom's (DT Quote) T-Mobile, and Motorola unveiled the Android-powered Cliq phone. Noticeably absent at a GigaOM event was No. 1 wireless shop Verizon. A Verizon rep at the time said: "stay tuned."

Unfortunately, no. I think they have pirate though, on talk like a pirate day, and some other easter eggs.

No one knows when 2.0 will be out. Heck we may even get another release before it (I've heard "1.8" tossed around the Internet more than once.) While most publications have generally settled on the rumor that 2.0 will release in December, I think it'll be at least February before it's released to consumer devices. (For reference, the month when 1.6 will be generally available to consumer devices is October.) So the SDK and accompanying information about 2.0 may come out in January, if we're lucky.

Yeah, like I said it'll probably be during the Motodev Conference next week. I straight up asked on the Motodev Facebook page if they'll be showing a new handset, and their response was, "We'll showcasing the Motorola CLIQ with MOTOBLUR." Not a denial, so it's almost a lock imo.

T-Mobile customers who purchase a CLIQ during the pre-sale period will receive their device within days of when the order is received. Orders will be processed right away and depending on when the device is purchased, customers could receive their CLIQ just days after Oct. 19.

Wait, Sprint has an Android phone??

It is not officially out for another 10 days.

Just watched some videos on it.. very cool looking phone. Wonder what the price will be..

For the educated Android people in here, say that I got an Android phone in a few months from now.. am I going to be able to update any Android based phone with the new versions of Android that come out? Or would I have to go through whatever the carrier that I'm on releases?

You guys ordering the Hero from Sprint, be very careful if its being ship to you.

Phonedog's Hero got destroyed by FedEx: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMzDZn_Xkbg

I blame HTC and/or Sprint for the packaging. Why put the phone all the way on the top of the box? With not much protection?

Almost all phones come at the top of the box...actually I can't think of any off the top of my head that don't and I sell phones! The handset is always the first thing you see when you open a phone box.

Anyway, that sucks, the damn thing was bent!

Really? That's should be corrected. I'm not into watching unboxing videos and my last phone purchase was the original iPhone over two years ago. So I wouldn't know what's the standard. At least the top flap of that box should have some sort of foam to protect the phone.

Motorola Droid (or whatever it's called)
* 3.7″ screen - I came!!
* 854×480 WVGA capacitive screen
* 5 megapixel camera
* ARM Cortex 500MHz CPU
* Facial recognition using the built-in camera (apparently you take a photo of someone and Google will pull in search results based on the image)
* Custom Motorola Interface/UI, no MOTOBLUR, no Verizon UI
* Available in black and titanium colors

I guess we won't get any of those 1 gighz CPUs phones this year?

I think I'm going to wait a month or two after my contract is up in December, before I decide anything.

I'm still eying the Ericsson...

3.7" touchscreen with a keyboard, and it's super slim? Hot damn. Being a slight Google fanboy I do like the fact that it's sticking with vanilla Android too.

Shame about the d-pad on the right, they must be thinking not many gamers are going to buy this over the Cliq. Hopefully Verizon subsidizes the hell out of it. :lol

What Patch are you talking about? I haven't heard of any patch or even if Sprint is getting that Sense UI update.

Motorola is holding a MOTODEV Android press event next Tuesday, October 6. That much is true. Here comes the leaked/speculative part:
Moto's second Android device, the Verizon-bound "Tao" (or "Droid' or "Codename: Sholes," whatever it's to be called) will be in stores on December 1st of this year.
Tao, as I'll call it for now, will launch with Android 2.0 "Eclair," and will NOT feature the
  • MOTOBLUR widget collection found on the Moto CLIQ.
  • The phone will be powered by a OMAP3430 – 600 MHz ARM Cortex A8 with a PowerVR SGX 530 GPU and 430MHz C64x+ DSP + ISP (Image Signal Processor)
  • Tao will be super-slim for a QWERTY slider, at just 13.7mm thick.
  • Tao will also rock a giant 3.7" touchscreen with 854 x 480 resolution (16:9 widescreen) at 16 million colors.
  • The phone's browser will support Flash.
  • Tao will also feature a 5 MP camera with autofocus, dual LED flash and video capture. You'll also get USB 2, a standard 3.5mm headphone jack, and both EV-DO and WiFI data.
  • Memory-wise, you'll get 16GB of onboard storage. But that's not all - the device will come packaged with an 8GB microSD memory card, and will have a microSD expansion slot.
Yeah, you could have figured that last bit out on your own, huh?

It's not Android, but the 4.3" HTC Leo/HD2/TP3 is coming out around October and has the 1ghz snapdragon processor. Android phones design is catching up (albeit a little slowly).

How's the Exchange support and syncing for Android phones by the way?

Anybody pick up the Pulse that went on sale a few days ago?

android is yet to come out for the zii. why don't you drop by ##zii @ freenode.net - zii coders (and not only) hang there, in limited numbers, depending on the moon's cycle.

The same forum that's been leaking the Motorola Sholes/Tao/Droid pictures has also leaked that there is a "sexy" new Motorola phone coming to AT&T in May that's better.

The post in question:

Just to really bug the people here though. While I think Sholes is a great phone, I am really looking forward to a phone coming next May to AT&T. Until than unlocking a Latin American Sholes to use on AT&T is okay, but that phone is sexy.

I assume the post in question is referencing a phone from Motorola, and if so, it would definitely run Android.

Pre-emptive strike against tomorrow's rumored Sholes/Tao/Droid unveiling?

Indeed. D-pad's not optimal (for gaming), a shame with the specs it apparently has. Though most games/emulators have configurable keys so you could use 2-Q-W-E-A or something.

HowardForum insiders say it's gonna launch a while before December 1st, so let's wait and see.

Every time I read this thread past the first post it gets really confusing. So we're supposed to ignore the phones coming out this fall and wait for the next revision coming out next year?

And who really cares about the hardware anymore? Why does it always gather the most adjectives, "sexy" this or that. When is the final revision of the software going to be out.

You might find the newer hardware to be more responsive. That's what interests me the most, at least. BTW, 1.6 updated on my phone at around noon or so today. I have a myTouch 3G, and 1.6, so far, seems a bit more responsive. But overall, it just adds settings.

Anyone know how to get speech synthesis working on 1.6? It says I need an app, but I don't see it. PEACE.

Sorry, but we couldn’t help posting this… We’ve received a screenshot of a Verizon Wireless calendar that shows in addition to marketing and merchandising dates, a Motorola Sholes target date of October 30th. If you notice the HTC Imagio date on the calendar, it correctly depicts the proper launch day for the handset, leading us to believe this is pretty accurate and recent.

Seems HoFo was right.

It's more for phone junkies who have to have the latest and greatest and replace their phones ever 6 months. Obviously, smartphones are becoming more like PCs in that some people absolutely must have the greatest hardware, and some people are fine with middling specs.

And for something some people use as often and in public as a phone, most people would prefer it to be at least somewhat eye-catching or attractive.

HoFo also noted though, that the "Red" color means marketing...not launch. So that might begin the advertising campaign which would make a lot more sense for a late Nov launch

This is also true. I also thought I read something like $180 million campaign for the Sholes, but that may have just been joking.

Huh, I actually like the blue. Though it does looks a little cheap.

SimleuqiR said:
Is this the rumored AT&T device? Cause that would suck. T-mobile and Sprint need more powerful Android phones. :D

It's possible, though the post I mentioned was referencing Motorola.

I want that blue Cliq more than anything.

I'm actually going to hold off on getting the Cliq just for a chance to grab the blue version. Which I have no idea if it's coming or not...

Could it be? The first Android handset... on Verizon?

Is it the Sholes, Tao, or Droid?

Is it Android 2.0 (Eclair)?

Are the specs true?

Is... is it everything we've been dreaming of? The Android phone everyone's been waiting for?

VERIZON WIRELESS AND GOOGLE LIVE WEBCAST 10 A.M. EST TODAY

WHO: Verizon Wireless, the nation’s leading wireless provider, and Google™

WHAT: Verizon Wireless and Google will host a webcast today. Speakers include:
  • Lowell McAdam, chief executive officer, Verizon Wireless
  • Eric Schmidt, chairman and chief executive officer, Google

This may actually need a new thread, I know how many people have posted here asking, begging for a Verizon Android handset. And if the leaked specs are anything close to true, this could be the best phone on the market, even including the iPhone. The amount of times such an event occurs is very, very low. This could be it for Android, the game-changing moment in tech history.

Are we ready?

TMO just pushed Donut down to my MyTouch. Seems snappier so far, but I had to disable my HTC touchpro keyboard since it wasn't working properly.
