Blame the manufacturers really.
Yes, but Samsung is my only hope right now and I am almost out of patience. I will be waiting until the end of Q2 next year. And if my perfect phone is not available by that time, I will skip this phones' generation.

WVGA, AMOLED, Android 2.0, superb camera and other important features by today's standards. I not really asking for something impossible.

so now that I have the HTC Hero (sprint)... what can I do with it?

you go bananas like when i first got mine on saturday. Soo much to do and see lol

I keep thinking about moving to Sprint at the end of this month (or attempting to), but everytime I see a video of the Rachael, I'm reminded of how much I love SE phones. That 8MP camera is not only the highest resolution, but SE cams are the best phone cams around. The sound quality, battery life and build quality should be the usual SE quality. I think I'll have to go with whatever provider gets that phone. PEACE.

I think it's unlikely to be tied to any US carrier.

Are you still living in the past? They are not the best in those aspects anymore. Don't expect anything from SE nowadays.

And If you live in NA, you have to wait for an "a" version with NAM 3G. In addition, don't expect it to be sold locked.

Who's got a better phone cam than the Cybershots? The only one I can think of is the Nokia with the camera optics done by another company. IMO, the SE Cybershots were unrivaled until the N95(?). The other things I like about SE, but aren't as important as the camera. If their cams are bested, then I'll probably go with whatever brand has the best phone cam. PEACE.

Just a word to some of you guys thinking about getting a Hero, I've had Sprint service in the past, the reception is great (I live in L.A.) and call quality is good. Sprint has a solid network in my area, actually better than my now carrier T-Mobile. However, Sprint has the worst customer service I have every been subjected to, on both a personal and professional level. I will never again have Sprint service.

That being said, I hope you guys already on Sprint don't have any experiences like me. And you guys looking to jump for Hero, I'm not trying to dissuade you from going with Sprint, just know what you're getting into. Great network, horrible, murderous rage inducing customer service. Hope you don't have any problems.

T-Mobile's customer service has been fantastic for me thus far, so I'll live with the occasional below average reception. Being in L.A. though, my coverage is usually fine.

Sprint's customer service is pretty horrible. The silver lining is that it is so horrible that people on the blog Consumerist bashed it so often causing Sprint to respond with a special hotline for people annoyed enough to search and complain online, a number of reps in the United States with high authority to make big changes and do what you want. When I had Sprint I simply had to call and leave a message and I'd usually get a call back a few hours later with my issue resolved, and then some more. It is the best customer service I've ever experienced anywhere.

Well that's pleasant surprise, I wish I had know about that earlier. One of my clients had a horrendous CS interaction with Sprint not long ago that lasted over 4 hours, I shit you not. I was unfortunately present for it, and it was not pleasant. Glad some things have changed for the better.

Hey, what do you know, Acer just kicked out its first Android handset into the mystical kingdom of donuts and Snapdragons. Liquid, a rebranded (and slightly restyled) A1, brings a 800 x 480 WVGA capacitive touchscreen upon which you'll watch Android 1.6 ride that peppy Snapdragon processor. It's resumably tuned to 1GHz (or higher) and not 768MHz as listed on the eXpansys Germany spec-sheet -- a trick that'll make this the fastest Android handset on the planet.

I respectfully disagree here. I've had sprint for just about ten years and have never, EVER had to have customer service "call me back" for an issue, nor have I ever had a problem that took more than an hour to resolve.

Hell, I pay my bill every month by requesting to talk directly to customer service. never takes more than 5 or 6 minutes to get a rep on the phone, and the few times I've had a serious issue (happened twice, both times regarding billing errors when changing plans) I was given a full credit back by the rep, with little hassle, in well under an hour.

If you're going to complain about sprint, it's the coverage area more than anything else. The misconception that customer service is an issue simply isn't true, and hasn't been for a long time.

Good lord, Andrex. This is literally the best "official thread" I've ever seen on GAF. Good job. I have a bunch of comments and questions, whenever you have the time.

So because of this whole Sidekick/Danger/Microsoft shit, I've decided to finally leave the stoneage and update my phone. Previously, I was definitely going to leave T-Mobile, but now knowing that Sidekick-gate isn't their fault, I may stay with them. (That $100 gift card they're giving us would go well towards a new phone, after all.)

I still have a SHIT-TON of research to do on my choices, but here are a few things I've decided/looked at or things I'm wondering, if anyone would like to help out an Android newbie such as myself. Keep in mind, money is not an issue. I'd like to go all out with my next phone, even if I shouldn't. :lol

- The Hero looks damn nice, but honestly, I'd rather not switch to Sprint. Also, I don't want AT&T as they were my provider before T-Mobile and I had fucking terrible service. I understand they've gotten better over time, but I still hear iPhone users complain quite a bit.

- So basically, I'm between staying with T-Mobile or switching to Verizon.

- That brings me to the myTouch and the Cliq, as far as T-Mobile goes. I'm curious as to which you would recommend (based on what you know of the Cliq, obviously, as it isn't out yet). I'm watching a video of the Motoblur UI and it looks neat. What UI does the myTouch use? I assume these are all brand-based? As in, Motoblur is Motorola's UI, Sense is HTC's UI, and so on.

- Looking at the Cliq demo here, it looks like Motoblur makes your homepage status updates and that's the main feature of it? I guess I'm curious as to why myTouch or Droid might have better UIs in your opinion.

- ... But damn, the Sholes/Droid looks sexy. What UI would that be using, a current or new one? I think at the moment, I'm between the Cliq (maybe the myTouch) and switching to Verizon for the Droid. The fact that I hear Verizon is very often reliable helps too.

And not to type you to death, but a couple comments based on things you've said:

Software-wise, the trade offs that are still there are simply in Android's favor, in my opinion. Android has background apps with seamless switching between them, it has a customizable homescreen with widgets, and the best notification system out there; iPhone has multitouch (for now, although HTC Sense has that too), 7-8 times the amount of apps (for now), and a great desktop syncing/buying program. I can do without the latter three for the former three, but that's simply me.

- What do you mean by the "best notification system out there" exactly? How so?

- iPhone still doesn't have the ability to multitask? I know my friend hated not being able to stay online on his AIM app while moving to another app. You're saying you can do that with Android? Something like that is a HUGE selling point for me.

I'm sure I have a bunch of other ranting crap I could type, but I'm getting tired. Thanks for any help though.

It's just less clutter, less backround processes and a cleaner UI. If you're not into the whole social networking thing, alot of those twitter, facebook, IM apps and widgets are useless to you. I use a modded Donut rom right now, and I have a twitter widget on my homescreen.

omg rite said:

Not to put words in Andrex's mouth, but Android has a dedicated notification area in the top windowshade that you can bring down with the flip or drag of your finger that overlays the screen. You can then tap on the notification, be it SMS, calendar alert, sports score update, email and it will take you directly to it. When you pull the windowshade down and it fills up with alot of messages, you can scroll through them. It's incredibly intuitive and never obtrusive, whatever program you're in you can see when you get a notification, pull the shade down a bit to check it.

omg rite said:

No it does not. Keep in mind though that the current Android hardware may cause the system to bog down if there are too many apps / widgets running.

I decided to jump in after playing with the hero in-store last night after work.

HTC sense was just Too damn slick to wait on the moment (and it's barebones UI)

This phone is so far beyond what my old instinct could do it's hilarious, and easily on par with the iphones I've played with.

HTC HD2 looks T-Mobile bound

tmo-htc-hd2

T-Mobile users that have grown accustomed to nothing but boring handsets might want to have a change of underwear on standby before reading any more, because it looks as if Magenta is actually going to offer a a handset of lust-worthy proportions.. According to TmoNews, its carrier namesake will offer the Snapdragon-powered HTC HD2 sometime in the near future, although it does not appear to be a part of Project Dark. We’re going to go and hit up some of our T-Mobile connects to see what they have to say on the matter, but in the meantime we suggest that those of you who are into it start praying that T-Mobile doesn’t ask for silly money if and/when it launches the HD2.

Thanks to everyone that send this in!

What are the chances that I can install a Android ROM on this puppy whenever it's released? Supposedly there is an Android version on the way, right?

It might happen that someone hacks Android to run on the phone, but it's always a lengthy process and totally not worth it if you just want to use Android. HTC Dragon may be its Android counterpart, but other than the processor being snapdragon and running a WVGA resolution, no one really knows what other features it could have. It could be a 3+" phone with a qwerty slider keyboard for all we know.

I've definitely had issues with regular Sprint customer service and no issue with Sprint coverage. While I've never had to leave my number for a callback on the regular Sprint customer service, it would take a long time and a lot of bouncing around. Most had no idea what they were talking about. Calling the Sprint Consumerist Hotline, in comparison, simply took minutes and all I'd have to do was leave a quick message explaining what I wanted done.

El Papa already answered some of your questions, but I'll try to finish filling in any gaps.

Thanks man.

Though, you'll notice there's no "official" in the title or OP. I think that philosophically, locking out other people from making their own Android threads by having one "official" one goes against Android's own philosophy.

But I tend to over-think these kinds of things.

omg rite said:

I personally would go for the Cliq because of its keyboard. Plus, while mostly the same, the Cliq does have slightly higher RAM and storage space, a key point if you're going to download tons of apps. And also, not to downplay the Cliq by saying it has "just" a keyboard, but apparently one of the best on a smartphone.

omg rite said:

MyTouch uses "stock Android", or "Google Experience Android"; that is, the compiled code from the Android Open Source Project with Google's own apps like YouTube, Maps, Calendar, and the Android Market injected. Not to say the other UIs don't have these apps though, but they're licensed from Google for that specific UI.

omg rite said:
- Looking at the Cliq demo here, it looks like Motoblur makes your homepage status updates and that's the main feature of it? I guess I'm curious as to why myTouch or Droid might have better UIs in your opinion.

From what I've seen, the two system's are the same, except for two points: many normal elements in Android have been "brushed over" with a distinct style (while remaining functionally the same), and it includes Motorola's social networking widgets. These widgets are normal Android widgets (using some proprietary APIs Motorola built into Motoblur), and their focus is indeed to update and track the various social networks and services you have joined.

omg rite said:
- ... But damn, the Sholes/Droid looks sexy. What UI would that be using, a current or new one?

The Sholes is rumored to have "Google Experience" or stock Android, at WVGA resolution (see the above screens on the Acer phone for what the OS will probably look like.) It is rumored to also be Android 2.0, which is unreleased (current version still being pushed out now is 1.6.)

omg rite said:
- What do you mean by the "best notification system out there" exactly? How so?

Right, as El Papa explained, Android has a "tray" of all your updates that is accessible from anywhere in the system. You know the standard "bar with the 3G/Wi-Fi/cellphone signal statuses next to a clock" on most phones? On Android, you swipe that down with your finger to reveal various notifications from MMS/SMS/chats/email/assorted apps. It's very well thought-out and designed. See below:

notify.jpg

Swipe down the white bar at the top, and...

Usb_notification.png

Then tap on the actual notification to open that app and address whatever the app is trying to tell you about.

omg rite said:

Yeah, any apps can be ran in-tandem, not just the music player. Not only that, widgets are always active on the homescreen for little bites of info or functionality, but as El Papa mentioned, too many apps and widgets can slow down the system. If you get the Sholes it probably won't be a problem, and all reports of the Cliq have been it's even faster than "stock Android" on similar hardware despite all the widgets running.

omg rite said:

No problem, hope El Papa and I helped.

Does android have flash support?

Officially, it will have "full" Flash 10.1 in 2010, and a beta is coming earlier that year. HTC Sense devices have Flash Lite already.

Ah, great. Thanks. I'm curious as to how Android 2.0 would look, compared to Sense or Blur, as my one problem with stock Android is that it looks a little bland.

I'll probably wait a couple weeks before I decide. I still need my $100 gift card from T-Mobile anyway. I'd like to see what Verizon offers before making any sort of decision, plus this whole "Project Dark/$50 a month everything/easy 4G adaption/buying Sprint/huge network expansion" group of rumors has my interest. (Kind of doubt that Sprint thing though.)

So FlyScreen is officially out. It's a lockscreen replacement that lets you see widgets on the lockscreen...so if that sounds like fun to you, enjoy.

Yeah, one of my favorite things about Android is the notification system. If you get a text, instead of your screen shrinking (Pre) or a big blue box interrupt your game or whatever else you're doing (iPhone), it just shows at the top where the time and reception data is already.

It's pretty cool.

lol.

Being a Sprint Employee (I am a Tech in L.A.) that even hurt. I am not here to say sorry for sprint, but I would NEVER EVER go through the Customer Service over the phone. They suck even on our end. They have no idea what goes on in the stores. And then they under mind us every chance they get.

I have had a totally different experience with sprint customer service. But my account is tied to a small business. They have upgraded me phones for a lot less than they cost, solved problems instantly and emailed and called back to check up. Sprint has been one of the best companies that I have had to work with.

You know what would be good? An easy-to-read chart with review scores on each Android phone.

From what I gather, the best/most powerful Android phone available right now is the Hero. But the Cliq & Sholes looks to unseat everything currently on the market in the weeks to come.

Right?

Eh, the Cliq is just some more social widgets and ability, but I still don't see what it can do that standard Android with widgets, apps and live folders can't. It just has a nicer presentation for social things. When it comes to power, the Samsung Moment is sitting near, if not at (unsure about Sholes) the top with its processor.

I shop by service provider, because Verizon is just amazing. So I'm waiting on the Sholes and the apparent "second phone" that will be available in the weeks to come.

Right?

But who's review scores? There's not exactly a metacritic for smartphones, unfortunately.

And a chart can paint a false picture. The best way to make sure you're buying the phone that best suits your needs is to research. Charts may be a valuable additional tool, but I think too many people would put too much weight behind the scores.

Oh, sorry. The Cliq is on T-Mobile, so didn't realize you only cared about Verizon. I'd be shocked if Verizon's version of the Hero had a faster processor than the Magic or Sprint's Hero, so it's really all about the Sholes over there.

I hope the end of October rumors are true, as I wouldn't mind getting the $69 plan on Verizon. I can get 17% off, so it wouldn't be a huge different from the $59 on Sprint...less features, sure, but if Sholes is worth it...

Cool, although SMS widget doesn't show the names of the people who texted you... unless I'm doing something wrong.

For all you who want to test drive the hero until the samung comes out, you can go to sprint get a hero and you have 30 days to try it out before its yours permanently. If you want to switch the other phone you will just have to pay 30 dollar restocking fee and they will swap phones for you. This is what i am doing now. Hero is great so far, if the samsung blows it away i will be swapping though :D

Sort of sucks that the moment doesnt run touchwiz. After having such nice interface functionality it will definitely be missed.

How awesome is your phone? So awesome. The lip doesn't look nearly as big in this photo.

October would almost literally make me convulse. I'm used to T-Mobile announcing an Android phone, then it going on pre-sale a month later, then coming out a month after that.

Motorola Cliq.

are any coming for AT&T anytime soon?

i want one without a keyboard (unless it's magically as thin as the iphone) that's powerful and has a large screen. i've been waiting for months for some android device as i want to start development, but i don't want any of the current HTC devices. (that new one looks kinda slick though)

Just realized the Model number says "Droid". I wonder if that's the official name now. And what about the firmware being 2.0. Is that an Android version? What's Donut at?

To put it bluntly, no, AT&T has not announced any plans for Android. There's a couple rumored phones for it, but nothing likely to come out soon, except for maybe the Dell Mini 3i, which is a bit of a gimped phone.

It's the manufacturer name Motorola is using internally, but whether it is released by Motorola and Verizon still carrying the name is unknown.

2.0 is indeed the Android version number. The current version is 1.6.

What happens with apps that are coded to take advantage of the standard res? How do they scale to the higher res screens of the moto?

And it seems the temps in accuweather are locked on Celsius. I'm not really feeling this flyscreen thing. I can just hit menu one extra time to get all this functionality on my own homescreen, with my own wallpaper.
