Hey, have a few questions about streaming audio..
If I click an .mp3 link over 3g on android.. what happens?

Does it stream like an unhacked iPhone?
Is there an option to download it?
Does it do anything at all?

Also.. Google Listen.. can this download podcasts over 3g?

And what about multiclient instant messenger applications?
What is the best one of those?

If I can get the Rachael to work on Verizon (can't), then expect me to freak out :P Otherwise, the Droid lovin' seems pretty justified to me. :)

It downloads the mp3 automatically. It's possible that there are apps out there that let you stream them instead, but I don't know.

Google Listen downloads podcasts over 3G.

Haven't used any IM client besides Google Talk.

What VNC client do you guys use on Android?
Is there anything as polished as Jaadu on the iPhone?

I'm getting nervous about the Rachael now. The Aino is $600. I didn't know that. Rachael is a better piece of kit too, so I'm assuming $600 will be the low-end estimate. I'm amped for the phone, but I'm honestly not paying more than $500-600 for any phone. I've set a limit of $1000 for my new laptop+cellphone combo. I can pay more for a phone than a laptop, but not that much more. I'd prefer if they were the same price, at worst. PEACE.

600 is way too low based on the previous Xperia prices. X1 and X2 launches are around 800+ and if that 32GB internal storage is anything true, it might even go up to 1k.

Yup, you heard that right. X2 isn't even launched yet and it has way inferior specs, Rachael isn't going to be cheaper than that.

I thought this, at first, but then got hopeful that the price would be reasonable thanks to the other competition in the Android market. But seeing the lower-specced Aino selling for $600 makes me almost certain the Rachael will be an $800+ deal-breaker. Oh well, if SE prices themselves out of the market, they will always be other Snapdragon phones to look forward to. PEACE.

1. It will stream the link. If you long press, there's an option to download. If you exit the music player, it will stop streaming. There's a small app on the Market called 'Ongoing Music Adapter' that lets you stream outside the music player (it's more of a plugin than an app).

2. Yes

3. Not sure, don't use them.

so i was in best buy yesterday and i asked the guy if they could do just 1 year contracts there with the droid, and he told me no and that he was pretty sure no one else could do them.

however, the there are droid tweets that say the 1 year contract price so i know someone will do them. do you have to go through a verizon store to get the one year contract?

i went ahead and preordered at BB but that just amounted to getting a 50$ gift certificate, so it could use that anyway.

Verizon doesn't let third party stores do 1 year upgrades.

Engadget goes hands on with the Xperia X10:

Argghh, I'm so frustrated right now. I'm a hardcore Crackberry addict but I've been watching Android closely and it's become incredibly tempting with the introduction of 2.0. The Droid makes my nerd pussy wetter than the 9th Ward after Hurricane Katrina, but it has two big problems: a shitty physical keyboard and it's on Verizon.

I'm with T-Mobile (not under contract) and I'd only consider going to Sprint because they have the $69.99 unlimited voice/text/data plan, but I'm really partial to GSM networks. In other words, I'm kind of stuck with T-Mobile unless Sprint comes out with something similar to the Droid that I just have to have ASAP.

I just want a decent processor, a slick form factor, a nice camera, 2.0, and a good keyboard (the keyboard is a big deal as a Crackberry addict). The Moment is kind of frumpy looking and will surely drop in price by the end of the year anyway. Arrgghh!

I'm surprised at how early on that device is. It doesn't seem like it's going to be ready for months, I thought this would be sitting alongside Droid this holiday.

Disappointing to say the least, I hope SE get their stuff together because it does look nice.

Disappointed that Rachael isn't really showable right now. When's a good time to start caring, CES? Bah. That took the lead right out of my pencil. :( What's the thought on the network it will work with?

umts hspa 900/1700/2100
umts gsm 850/900/1800/1900

I don't know squat. That look like it'll work with Sprint? If so, I'm gonna try to make the switch over to them, while getting the Hero. I'll have to see if Tmo lets me out without penalty though. PEACE.

My plot's been foiled completely. I guess I'm sticking with Tmo and waiting for the Spring to get a new phone. Maybe I'll jump on the Cliq in the meantime if I can find it for cheap enough. PEACE.

Looks great, but you would be crazy to buy anything XPERIA after what Sony has done to the customers of the original XPERIA by not even bothering to release a 6.5 rom a mere 8 or 9 months after release.

It looks pretty.. but it needs to run a lot better before it will be a contender..

I was having second thoughts about getting the Droid this week when the Xperia was coming.. but it is clear that it won't be ready soon..

There's no such thing as a perfect device.. and HTC phones have never appealed to me aesthetically.. so I'm looking forward to this one.

More like a year, WM6.5 official roms only came out since last month.

But yeah, it wasn't a big issue because there was still HTC XDA support, but SE doesn't seem to be transitioning well into the smartphone market after iPhone came out. It's a shame because their hardware design is still top notch.

wow. i'm guessing these specs will change before launch, but the fact that they've unveiled this like this suggests they're not sure what they're doing.

makes the choice of the droid a bit easier.

Well, so they fucked it up after all. No multi touch and Android 1.6?

Well, no other phone has 2.0 yet and it was pretty obvious that Droid has 2.0 only because of the close collaboration between Verizon, Motorola, and Google. As for multi-touch, it could still come, but eh.

Seems to me that they needed something to gain investor confidence after their Q3 losses and thus rushed this announcement out.

Yeah, well, maybe... We'll see. :)

Just glad that I didn't wait for Rachael and got myself an iPhone instead. But still not totally satisfied with it. Maybe I should look at the Droid, whenever it will be available here in Sweden.

Way to dissapoint SE. I was looking forward to hopping on the Android train again. Guess my Blackberry will do for now.

Speaking of which, my Blackberry has a really cool feature with UMA...which uses my wifi as signal so I get great service. Which does wonders because my apartment is literally a deadzone. Is there anything on Android that could possibly do that?

very likely, but they could've said it's going to be shipping with 2.0 and features X,Y, and Z. the announcement sounds pretty silly with those specs and knowing it's hitting months later. it's not like they don't have the time.

I thought that depends on your carrier? I know Sprint has this thing called Airrave. It's usually $99 with a monthly fee, but they usually waive those so you get that for free.

Okay it was a year in the US, but still the Xperia is on sale in Australia for around $1000 (hasnt dropped since launch) and still running 6.1

and there was this: http://xperiancers.com/2009/09/10/x1-upgrade-not-in-the-roadmap/ which pissed off a lot of X1 owners, recent buyers included.

Thank god for XDA developers, but I wouldn't want to own an android phone from this lot especially without a comparable community that WinMo has with roms. I'd bet on HTC android phones being far better supported by the manufacturer and that this phone will not see a single official update because SE will want you to upgrade to the X4.

I think a lot of people saw 6.5 not coming when X2 was unveiled, which was pretty much the same thing as X1 except for 8MP camera, stereo speakers, and updated gimmicky panels interface. Yeah, it's a dick move by SE, we can all agree on that.

I'm just happy I got mine 7 months used for like 250usd and still in good condition, pretty good deal at that price, but yeah, SE is pricing their stuff way out of their competition especially in the smartphone market.

The official website for the X10 is also updated with a new promo video.

Excellent hands-on article at http://android.modaco.com/content/a...y-ericsson-announce-android-based-xperia-x10/

This is the Android based Sony Ericsson Xperia X10. Looks nice doesn't it?

The Xperia X10 is Sony Ericsson first foray into the Android space, and builds on Android 1.6 (Donut) with a great looking context sensitive custom user experience layer. The phone will be available in 1H 2010 (we'd be willing to be just after Mobile World Congress in mid february) in Sensuous Black and Luster White, with the following specifications:
Google™ Android Donut, version 1.6 Donut (future upgradeable to 2.0)
1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon™ QSD8250
GSM GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900, UMTS HSPA 900/1700/2100 and UMTS HSPA 800/850/1900/2100
8.1 megapixel camera with auto focus, face recognition, geotagging, image and video stabiliser, photo and video light, smile detection and touch focus
A-GPS
Bluetooth
WiFi
3.5 mm audio jack
4" 480 x 854 262,144 colour TFT touchscreen
Up to 1 GB phone memory
microSD expansion
119 x 63 x 13 mm
135 grams
I was fortunate enough to be able to attend the press event yesterday and get a (very) brief hands on with the device. So what's it like? The caveat is that it is nowhere near production ready, but the early signs look promising! The Sony Ericsson apps were very much 'early versions' (and therefore not massively performant), but the device as a whole flew along and the rendering in the browser and maps applications was stunningly fast thanks to the 1GHz Snapdragon processor. The high resolution screen looked great and the hardware looked nicely designed (of course, there's only so much you can do with a 'slab')...

The Xperia X10 represents a new direction for Sony Ericsson. The X10 is new hardware product engineered by Sony Ericsson in house (unlike previous Xperia handsets) but the annoucement yesterday was also very much about the new user experience platform. Sony Ericsson is moving away from Cybershot, Walkman etc. branding to a device that does everything with an integrated experience. This is part of a drive to become known as 'The communication entertainment brand'. Entertainment and communication blended together, driving social networking and sharing via those mediums. Sony Ericsson feel they are well positioned to bring communication and entertainment together.

Don't want to post the whole wall of text.

Looks fucken amazing. I love it. If only we could get the Sense UI on that it would be the best phone EVAR.

February? Shit! That's ways to go!! I guess I can hold off until then. My iPhone 2G is showing it's age...I may have to revert to stock UI to make it run a bit smoother.

I want to wait until the X10 is ready for prime time so I can make my decision if I'm getting it, and if it will come to a carrier I can afford.

Vyse The Legend said:
To those asking what carrier the X10 may come to: it supports T-Mobile's 3G frequencies.

Is this true!!??? 0_o

EDIT:

The Sony site says the following:

GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900
UMTS/HSPA 800/850/1900/2100

T-Mobile exclusively uses the AWS 1700/2100 MHz frequency-band, making it incompatible with other existing 3G UMTS/HSPA networks already established in the United States.

>_< Shouldn't it support the 1700 band also to be compatible? I'm so confused.

What a phone! Hopefully tmobile will snag this up. As much as I love my g1, it's aging pretty damn bad in today's smart phone market.

I can only imagine how much this fucker is going to be :lol Hello 800 dollars.
