Android Hardware Thread - 2009 Edition

For anyone hoping, I wouldn't hold your breath for Supersonic news. A safe bet would probably be the Bravo, the MyTouch Slide, Espresso, and maybe one of the Hero successors like Legend or Liberty. Maybe a QVGA phone, too. I expect the next version of Sense, too.

HTC definitely has a lot in their arsenal to get us hyped.

Definitely, MWC should be an explosion of Android. Last year was a bit disappointing but I'm expecting this year Android will clean up nicely.

On a side note, I'm expecting the 2010 hardware thread to be done before it happens. Part of me doesn't want so many new Android devices announced, more work to do. :lol

Yeah there should be a lot going on. I'm hoping for more information on the Android firmware roadmap, possible sneak peak at WinMo7 (with some kind of live integration?) and perhaps the return of SonyEricsson and Motorola as major players again (UK perspective here where Motorola have all but vanished). I remember when Sony Ericsson were a force to be reckoned with but a terrible run of software/hardware issues from the K850i onwards has damaged their reputation and the Satio/Xperia X2 disasters have compounded them. The market needs a strong SE/Motorola presence to add innovation to the market (and deliver me an Android handset with a decent camera!) Plus Android needs to get more serious about gaming if it's to mount a stronger challenge to the iPhone as king of the consumer smartphone.

Supersonic!

Oh look, T-mobile...and what's that? Android 3.0? Wat???

http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2010/01/23/htc-supersonic-get-its-screen-shot/

This is probably a fake. But it does seem like T-mobile is getting many of the hot Android devices lately.

Edit:
Why the low resolution. No chance this phone gets a 480x320 display.

It's funny how people forgot all the debacle about Google Nexus One being a completely new phone model with VoIP, $200 unlocked prices, and all other crazy stuffs, now jump on him saying he was wrong all along.

Andrex said:
If that's true I wouldn't expect it until September or later. Android 2.5 will probably hit around May/June if their releases are somewhat consistent.

Anyways there was a good comment posted on GigaOM:
Actually Sam's comment is terrible:
I’m concerned about why editorial allowed this writer to touch this content at all and then after seeing, it allowed it to be published. First, as several have said the Droid is a keyboard phone with a fundamentally different customer base to the touchscreen-only Nexus One.
Sorry but this is hilariously untrue and ridiculous. The Droid and Nexus One are competitors regardless of the latter not having a physical keyboard. Or did we forget that Verizon positioned the Droid as their response to the iPhone? Perhaps they didn't get the memo.:lol
This underlines how little the author knows about phones at all. Second the author clearly knows nothing about smartphone OS’s and their history, not to mention consumer electronics in general. Nokia has for years released its own Symbian devices while selling the OS to the like of Samsung and Sony Ericsson.
Puh lease. Samsung released maybe 1 S60 handset in 6 years and it had mininal exposure. And Sony Ericsson only recently started using S60 with the Satio. Everything before that was Symbian, but UIQ. S60 is synonymous with Nokia. Series60 is a terrible example.

Before that Palm did so with Handspring and Sony
Um Handspring was founded by Palm employees and later acquired by Palm. And that leaves Sony and their Clie PDAs running PalmOS. 1 company.
. Sony itself had a long and lucrative run of selling Mindisc players while licencsing the ATRAC compression technology and hardware to the likes of Panasonic, Sharp, Kenwood and many others.
Atrac and Minidisc are very different from a constantly evolving OS. A more mainstream example could have been the CD(Philips) or DVD(Toshiba) but again very different from a evolving OS. Apples to Oranges.

My Touch Pro 2 is sadly on its way out (touchscreen isn't responsible on some areas). I've been lookind around for what would be the perfect Android phone for me, but I can't even seem to find one announced. I'd want one with a Snapdragon processor, a 800x480 screen at least as big as the one from my touch pro 2, and the really tough one, a hardware keyboard. I do a lot of ssh from my phone, so a hardware keyboard is a must.
Has such a device been announced somewhere?

No, not yet. Don't think there's rumors of such a device yet either.

Well, there's the Lenovo LePhone that currently runs on the OPhone platform (Android variant) in China, which is supposed to come to international markets later this year, and maybe run Android proper?

Though there should be other devices announced and coming out by then which match your needs.

This one is the closest thing I think:

http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/09/inbrics-m1-is-the-thinnest-android-slider-weve-seen-probably-e/

It only mentions a 3.7 inch screen and not the resolution but I think 800 by 480 is what the other 3.7 inch screens have for resolution. I like the look of the keyboard and they did mention it was "clicky" and that sounds good to me.

800MHz processor as well so no SnapDragon here. Like I said it's the closest thing announced I've seen.

I'd like exactly what you want but preferably from HTC as it would have Sense UI but HTC has not publically or privately shown anything that has the specs I want. Bravo has the Snapdragon CPU and 800 by 480 screen but no keyboard.

I see so many comments on various sites of people asking for what you and I are asking for...I hope HTC considers it.

Seriously.

I may be a cheerleader, but Andrex doesn't even have one, and see his various threads establishing him as a guy in the know on these matters.

Sacrifice Snapdragon for a scrappy 600mhz chip, gain an extra 4 pixels of resolution and .1 inch of screen size, and one of the most responsive capacitive screens I've ever felt. I have used ssh quite a bit with it and it works like a dream.

Though after looking over that Inbrics phone, I do want it. Weird that it only has a 3mp camera. But I most want an HDMI out and the article seems to indicate it's got one or something compatible.

EDIT: bleh just read closer, no Snapdragon- the same somewhat shoddy 800mhz proc in the Samsung Moment.

Unless you want to wait for who knows how long, Droid (or Milestone, as the case may be).

Granted the picture is absolutely grainy and unflattering. However, that's not enough to keep us from getting excited. Their source confirms the details we've previously heard - WiMAX, 4.3-inch screen, kickstand, and Snapdragon power. The only new feature to add to the mix at this time is FM radio.

Looks almost exactly like the HD 2, which is what Android fans everywhere begged for when the G1 was coming out. Well looks like we may finally get our wish. :) It also looks to be one of the only exciting prospects Sprint has lined up (in comparison to T-Mobile, at least.)

Also for those interested I've opened a Google Wave with the current lineup of 2010 Android devices for adding to the upcoming Hardware thread. The link is here, I think. If that doesn't work, search this:

tag:"Android, NeoGAF, 2010, Google"

I could probably use some help keeping track of them all.

Well, after having the Motorola Ming (A1200) for almost 5 years, I think I'm ready to finally upgrade to a new phone. I'm on TMobile and debating the Google N1 or waiting on the Motoroi to come to the US as rumored in March. Decisions, decisions. I'd really like to avoid a contract so the N1 at $530 is a thought, but the Motoroi looks to possibly be a better phone. Cost is what worries me on that though. Haven't heard anything about prices at all.

Motoroi Pros:
- Slightly higher res screen (854x480 compared to N1's 800x480)
- 720p video recording
- 8 megapixel camera
- HDMI port

Nexus One Pros:
- Android 2.1 (if it lasts)
- AMOLED (if that's your thing)
- 1 GHz Snapdragon processor (compared to Motoroi's 600 MHz Cortex A8)
- Trackball

TBH I see them both as pretty even right now. Motoroi could be ever-so-slightly better when it gets 2.1, but if it's a Motoblur device I don't know if I'd count that as a pro...

Couldn't you ditch BLUR and just install stock Android?

Yeah, I'm close to pulling the trigger on the Nexus One, if I wait for the Motoroi I'm willing to bet something else will be coming out two months behind it, then two months behind that, rinse, repeat. I've been doing the waiting game ever since the first iphone, I guess you could wait forever if you're always waiting for the next big thing.

Apparently, the N1 is going to be available for every carrier:

Today's Nexus One may be the hottest keyboard-free Android smartphone on the market today, but it doesn't exactly have the hottest network support. That looks like it'll be changing soon thanks to Walmart of all places, which has put up a "Coming Soon!" page for the Nexus One, listing an impressive suite of wireless bands including 1xEvDO for 3G on Sprint and Verizon and UMTS/HSDPA 850/1900 for 3G on AT&T. Could this finally be the network-agnostic smartphone (or smartphones, as the case may be) that Google has wanted, or is it just a case of some optimistic web admin letting his fingers do the walking when writing up this teaser? We're leaning toward the former, but there's also a rumor of a $99 price when purchased at Walmart, and we're having a hard time swallowing that one -- if only because the Droid went for $188 there at launch.

http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/26/walmart-greeters-will-soon-welcome-you-to-a-nexus-one-with-sprin/

I've actually been hoping a phone would come along that had all four 3G radios inside, would be pretty sweet. As it stands it seems like there will be different Nexus One models with different 3G radios inside, which isn't really different from being locked into one network anyways.

Also the current rumor is that the Wal-Mart Nexus One will be $99... unlocked. Yeah, that's BS, but would be sweet if true.

Damn...that makes me wonder even more now about hanging on to my Moment. I've got a little less than 2 weeks left in my 30 day trial and the novelty is starting to wear off a bit. Don't get me wrong, the upgrade to a smartphone has made things so much more convenient, but the Moment has some really basic flaws with the phone functionality that have me wondering if the update to 2.1 is going to solve them. For you guys that have experienced the upgrade from 1.5-1.6 to 2.0-2.1, where did you see most of the improvements? Did your phones have any issues with the phone functions itself that were fixed?

Examples of what I'm talking about with the Moment: phone does not vibrate for notifications when the ringer is set to vibrate, no LED indicator for missed notifications though the soft keys illuminate, the screen occasionally wakes for no reason. To top it off, Sprint has totally bumbled the release of the latest firmware update which does not give me much confidence in the 2.1 roll-out itself. I just hope plan prices continue to fall so my corporate discount does not keep me tied to Sprint for the foreseeable future.

wut

if true....:D

The Wal-Mart Nexus One would without a doubt be the best selling smartphone ever if it was that price unlocked. Unfortunately Google would be losing $80 on each phone based on manufacturing costs alone, so, yeah. 98% probability it's not unlocked.

Even still, $99 even with a two-year contract on any non-Tmo carrier of your choice is a pretty sweet deal in itself.

SimleuqiR said:
Will it be AMOLED screen? Cause that would be a thing of beauty.

Dunno. I want to say... probably. It is a high end phone it seems. Though it may be difficult to get an AMOLED at that size reasonably.

Unlocked? Please let that be true. I would be all up in that in a heartbeat.

The design looks a lot worse actually. The buttons and the horrible back.. Just sad. I don't get why HTC publishes worse hardware designs after the HD2, which looks really great

Eh let's wait until some renders are shown, especially official ones.

A 4.3 inch screen is essentially what it would take for me to be willing to sacrifice a keyboard.

Still, I'd like to see that thing next to the HD2...

If that Supersonic really is coming to Sprint that may be what gets me to switch from WebOS (as much as I love it) to Android.

Why the FUCK do they keep scrambling around the buttons?!

Doesn't the lower left for the back button make sense to everyone else?!?!

*hugs droid*

It's almost Feb, and still no firmware update for the Hero. Is it time for me to root this thing now? If this is the level of support I can expect for Sprint Android phones, I'll be updating my phone more than the OS. :( PEACE.

It doesn't have Sprint apps on it yet. NASCAR and NFL apps should be visible. Still, I hope this is a Sprint phone. Between this and the N1, I'd take this. The best part of the N1 is 2.1. This will get that eventually. I just wonder if the Supersonic will also have a noise-cancelling mic on the back like the N1. PEACE.

It's Sprint, look at the CDMA icons at the top

Ah, ok. I figured the article got that from somewhere, but now that you mention it, you're right. The Hero is my first Sprint phone, so I thought the status bar symbols were that way because of the phone.

In other news... YEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSS!!!! :D PEACE.

Doesn't have Google apps either. They usually don't add those kinds of things until the firmware is really stable. Plus it's nearly confirmed to have WiMax (also known as 4G) which only Sprint has.

After seeing the leaks from HTC I was excited by the Bravo (of course), but does it have any specs better than the N1? Does anything rumored at this point have any specs better than the N1?

Edit: I'm considering a new phone in the next few months but for now I'm with ATT. If the N1 comes to ATT soon enough, I might just upgrade to it.

I'm hoping Verizon gets a 4.3" phone maybe it's their HTC incredible otherwise I'll get the Droid or the Nexus One.

The Incredible is the codename for the Bravo, which only has a 3.7in screen and is reportedly coming to Verizon.

2.1 is rumored for march

For EU, but I suspect it'll hit US around then or April. Though Sprint has absolutely no clue when it comes to firmware updates, unfortunately.

My other post got lost in the screen shots, but the latest firmware update for the Moment with Sprint has been a mess from what I've been following on androidforums. I don't know what it is with Sprint, but they just can't get any kind of synergy going through their operations...it's frustrating when you're waiting for fixes/upgrades. The average Sprint customer knows more about the firmware updates than the freaking techs.

Despite a detailed page on Wal-Mart's Web site indicating that the Nexus One phone is "coming soon," Google says it has no plans to distribute the phone anywhere but its own Web site.

Wal-Mart Stores has created a page on its wireless Web site featuring the Nexus One. It says the device is coming soon, but does not include pricing information.

"We currently have no plans to distribute the Nexus One through any channel other than our Google-hosted web store," Google spokeswoman Katie Watson said via e-mail.

Wal-Mart says that the page was put up by mistake, due to a technical error. "We're working with our partner Let's Talk to have it removed as quickly as possible. We have no plans to carry Nexus One in Walmart stores or online at Walmart.com at this time," Ashley Hardie, a Wal-Mart spokeswoman, said via e-mail.

Oh well. Woulda been nice to see it in stores.
