It seemed very laggy, but hopefully it really was doing some syncing and work in the background. It was freshly turned on with no apps running so thats the only justification.

edit: Is there a difference between mHz and mhz Arm Cortex? The Droid is Arm Cortex and I don't get the difference.
 
So I assume the first and only way to have 2.0 is to get a Droid? Other phones can't update to it like iPhone can with updates?

ARM Cortex A8 is a better version of the ARM 11 processor in all Android phones to-date. Essentially, even at the same clockspeed (MHz), it can go a lot faster. That's why I listed it. Cortex currently powers the iPhone 3GS, whereas the first two iPhones had ARM 11's like the first generation of Android phones.

Snapdragon is a similar spec bump from the Qualcomm processors. It can do a lot more.

These "next gen" processors are more expensive and take up more room, which is why we haven't seen much of them yet, but their capabilities are far advanced from what's currently powering Android phones.

The rumor is other Android phones will get 2.0 in Q2 2010. Which handsets get it is up to the phone's manufacturer and carrier.

Oh thanks for the info. I was disappointed to see the Droid's processor so low but that makes it clearer to me. It's funny how Motorola was such a bum for the past few years and now they have the hottest Android phone in the pipeline.

I wish we had more specs, I wish we knew more but based on style it is simple the most sophisticated and best looking Android phone there is, imo. Hopefully the rest, like build quality, performance, and storage fall into place nicely. It's hard to wait so long, I want some Moment and Droid reviews nao!

Yikes, that was really laggy. I hope it's only because of the synching when you first turn it on, as I would find that unusable if it were a constant issue.

So samsung moment wont have any type of modified android? :-/ thats sad. Having all of the added features of sense ui is nice.

I'm still trying to find a good time wasting game for the hero.

I prefer stock Android. Of course, I <3 Google so whatever. Sense is slick but I always prefer what's official.

Same here, though I think I might have fallen for the Rachael UI. The contacts list is so damn cool, I made sure I updated my contacts with pics this week. As long as it's not laggy or a resource hog, I think I'd prefer that one. PEACE.

Rachael's UI from that video does look gorgeous, stunning, and beautiful, but I wonder how usable it is once you start using it day-to-day. Would the eye candy get in the way? Hopefully S-E solved that problem.

That pretty much shows that Verizon is excited for Android and isn't getting the iPhone. It's one thing to attack AT&T with there's a map for that, but to attack the iPhone and show what it can't do...that's a whole other story. You wouldn't attack the iPhone if you're going to get it...better yet, Steve Jobs wouldn't let you.

You can always get your own widgets, keyboard or home replacements anyhow, if you feel the need that is. Dextop is pretty cool. I know everyone has a different opinion but I like stock Android.

Yeah, I mean the video looked nice and flashy but for everyday use...people's status updates were printed small on cards with their picture...we know that not everyone has a high res picture for things like Twitter, and reading in a small font on a card isn't too ideal. It was a lot of form over function.

edit: After watching both parts of Mobile Burn's Cliq review...I came away really liking the Cliq. I never cared much for it but it held it's own in performance the whole time and looks nice...awesome keyboard, too. If T-Mobile really does announce a $50 unlimited, they'll probably move a ton of them.

Here comes a campaign to push the Droid over the iPhone!
 
I'm not sure if this is the right thread for this, but it's the most active Android thread here, so I'll try.

Today I flashed my HTC Magic for the first time. I installed Cyanogen 4.1.999 following several tutorials on rooting/flashing. It went rather well I think. I made a Nandroid backup, installed the ROM and it booted successfully. Almost everything is working now.

But there are a few more or less minor problems that remain. Maybe someone here has any ideas. I already googled a lot, but didn't have much luck.

1) This is not really a problem, but my phone now thinks it's an "T-Mobile myTouch 3G" instead of the "Vodafone HTC Magic" it used to be. As long as this doesn't cause any problems I'm fine with it, though.
2) When I set my phone to German there are no dictionary recommendations while typing. It works fine with English, so I guess I'm just missing some dictionary file? I read somewhere that a reboot after setting it to German could help, but it didn't for me. So for now I'm stuck with no dictionary or a keyboard alternative which I'm not really happy with.
3) I can't seem to be able to restore the Nandroid backup. Before installing the Cyanogen ROM I tried to wipe and restore the backup to see if it works. It didn't and just loops the Android boot logo forever (I tried several times with several recovery ROMs). Do I have to flash my SPL for that? Because I didn't need to do that to install the new ROM.

I've been trying to do this for hours, it seems like there's a million methods and a million roms and I cannot figure anything out.

Could you share the tutorial you used?

Apparently they're using the name with license. Seems Motorola really believes in the name if they went through the trouble of licensing it. Can't imagine it was cheap, either.

I'm still skeptical. But then again, I don't know much about Android. If the Android OS completely replaces Verizon's completely backwards/shitty interface, I'm all in.

Anything on the horizon/rumored for sprint with a 3.5" screen or bigger? The Moment is really catching my eye, but the Droid has my heart.

Not that I've heard of. In fact both Android Sprint phones were kind of surprises... The Hero leaked from HTC's website but it turned out much different than anyone expected anyways. Sprint seems like they can best keep a lid on things out of the big four.

Ugh, thats true. I guess I can hold out till 2010 to see what could be in the pipeline.

I was confused as well. Actually I still am now. There seem to be so many ways to do it and most tutorials never mention that. Most also don't say why they do certain steps like flashing the SPL when it's obviously not necessary (at least for installing new ROMs).

I mostly followed the instructions on this site: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Sapphire_Hacking

To install Cyanogen you have to use this tutorial: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Full_Update_Guide_-_G1/Dream/Magic32B_Firmware_to_CyanogenMod
I don't know what the first two steps are for as it worked without them for me and no other tutorial said anything similar. So I started with the "Cyanogen Recovery Image" step.

Keep in mind that I'm still unable to restore backups. So maybe there's something else to do. The new ROM is working fine, though.
 
So I'm probably going to get the Droid, my question is will Verizon be able to port my numbers over? At HoFo they are saying Android syncs with your GMail contacts....if that's the case then I have a lot of updating to do in the next few weeks.

Wait, wouldn't 2.0 be in the AOSP branch when it's final? If 2.0 is in Droid that means it's almost done, right? So it should be in AOSP soon, no? Which means I'd be able to flash it on my G1. What am I missing?

I wonder if Verizon will have a deal for those of us in the middle of 2 year contracts (reupped last Sept after being month-to-month for two years after last 2 year contract). The droid looks nice. Like the full keyboard.
